big mistake to put those 2 peces next to the stringer been doing this for over 29 years and you have just pur a stiff 6 to 8 inches in a flexible product it is going to break at either of those ends, and make diamond shaped patches that will spread the flex over a big area.

Hi, i recently found a surfboard, but the whole underside of it is dry rotted, not sure how to fix it and i know nothing about surf board all i know is that its a foam surf board and the dry rotted side is some sort of plastic like material, any tips on how to fix?

Bro if the stringer is broken u need to add any kind of reinforcement... it will easily snap again... the stringer is the backbone of every surfboard...
@coulsonssurf
@coulsonssurf 4 месяца назад
Not necessarily. Adding in extra stringers in my opinion adds to much strength on a shorter board and thus creating a breaking point. Extra glass reinforced rails layered correctly is a better solution in my opinion. I surfed this board in around 8-10 cloud break and it didn’t break.

Back in the 90s, I had a 6-10 Woodgee. It was my big wave magic board for years. Broke it 4 times and then it was toast. An Australian guy left it with one of my friends and I bought it for maybe $150.

Great job with a excellent video. If alright a question. Have u ever repaired a snapped epoxy mal (tolhurst) without a ply stringer. Have one now and just joined it and still very flexible. Dont like the timber dowels thinking of routering 2 small channels either side and fin rovings.???
@coulsonssurf
@coulsonssurf 6 месяцев назад
Yes I have. Keep in mind fin rovings are super strong. I believe this create a stiff breaking point. Even though the board has snapped you still want it to flex slightly. I’ve found that extra glass on the rail always seems to work and I’ve never had one come back. 👍🏻

quick question, I know there are hard,soft, and medium sanding discs. When would you use each? I see you're using a hard pad so that wont conform to the board?
@coulsonssurf
@coulsonssurf 6 месяцев назад
This is a medium disk on the sander. We always use medium for finish sanding dings. A super soft pad I find gets more sand throughs.

I pay 800-1000 for my local shaper on a custom short board. The build and finish quality are second to none, I get the board the exact dimensions I want and if I like I can get it glassed a bit heavier and the boards really last. Worth every cent in my opinion.

mass produced products have completely warped peoples understanding of fair labour. my uncle is a leatherworker (split 50/50 with his corporate job due to funding) and the amount of people who even show up to artisan fairs saying they could get a bag for half the price off amazon is insane

What difference does it make to laminate after box is routed or laminate over foam insert and then laminate over box again.
@coulsonssurf
@coulsonssurf 8 месяцев назад
If you laminate twice it would Most likely be even stronger. However a lot harder to get flat. Good idea though.
