While I generally like to think of myself as someone with fairly eclectic musical tastes, I've always found jazz a bit challenging. While I can certainly appreciate the experimentation, variety and improvisation of the style, to my untrained ears its often sounds like five musicians who can't agree on which song they're trying to play. Even simple jazz melodies can quickly wander off into parts unknown, which leads to my greater respect for the precussion section of jazz groups, as they are invariably tasked with serving as the ensemble's touchstone, reliably and patiently guiding them back to the note from whence they all started. Well done, Owen...
