Lad O'Beirne was a great Sligo fiddler and was also good friend to the great Michael Coleman himself and through their friendship, Lad O'Beirne married Michael Coleman's niece Mary Coleman a daughter of Owen Coleman It was Lad's father Philip O'Beirne for which Coleman himself said "l learned all l know about bowing reels from Philip O'Beirne

The focus of the dive would be very different today. Unfortunately the Translater of De Cuellar's account uses the term "Savages" in the translation when "foreigners" would be a far better term. The Translator was unhappy about the use of "Savages" as they felt it was a bit harsh. It would not have been harsh for De Cuellar to use Savages for Muslim North African slaves at the time. So the first "Savages" are the North African galley slaves who are on the scene far faster than the looting locals and unlike many of the Spaniards they were good swimmers. We know that from the book White Gold by Giles Milton. The second "Savages" use applies to the Irish and the third "Savages" is used for the English troops as they lay seige to O'Rourke's castle. It rather changes the story to one of slavery and the lucky escape of the North African galley slaves. I listened to this video and there is no mention of galley slaves that are actually listed in the De Cuellar account by an archaeoligist. Neither has one pair of rowing shackles being found as an artifact as yet. All of us that have a smattering of North African DNA together with our Irish heritage hope for more dives.

I was told years ago my ancestors were Spanish. The story is that when Phillip II sent the Armada Grande in 1588 - the family were traders, and provide 4 barques of ships. They were captained by the father and three sons. Then in August or September - the actual date is vague, the father arrived home. The mother evidently died either later that year or early the following year - it is said she died of a broken heart. At least one of those brothers must have come ashore, and assimilated in to the local population. What I do know is his name was - Juan, or Pedro, or Jaimie, because that is the name of the three sons who sailed with their father. My paternal grandfather's first name was James - Jaimie, and he asserted he was named after his Spanish great-great- ..... great grand father. He also had some 'treasures,' which he said were off the ship. As a child it did not really register. Here I am 72 years of age and only recently discovered that my great grandfather was born in Drogheda, married my great grandmother who was born near Belfast, moved to England where my granddad was born, great grand dad died. Great granny remarried and had another son who died in World War 1. May all who died in the Armada and other conflicts rest in peace.

I have to draw the attention of the organizing committee, so that it corrects a mistake at the end of the video, and that is that the coat of arms of Spain that appears shows the one that was official during the reign of Don Amadeo de Saboya, which is why the central sector shows the emblem of the house of Savoy. The current coat of arms must show the three fleurs-de-lis, symbol of the currently reigning dynasty, which is that of the Bourbons. For the rest, my most sincere congratulations for this act of honor towards the Spanish sailors and which will henceforth be a symbol of our friendship. Thank you very much.
