Welcome to my channel, the Tactical Heretic, where I discuss different firearms-related subjects from a layman's perspective. I'm not military or law enforcement. I've never been in a gunfight in my life. I'm just a guy who grew up around guns. I'll talk guns, tactics, test out ammo and generally have fun.
Those projectiles slowed and limited pen disproportionately to the expansion. Very strange that pass through occurred through denim given the lack of pen with so little expansion.
That appears to be more of a pure defensive round that a hunting round. As a defensive round it looks great, similar to many of the better 45 ACP projectiles.
Xtp's at least make for good handloads in 45 colt and other loads where your getting large caliber and not super speedy rounds, especially considering the xtp tends to get moderate expansion. Manufacturers tend to make b.s underpowered loads and its a shame. Modern 45 colts are capable of so much more and loading them to what the modern guns are capable of can achieve great things. It would be great if we could save the hassle and someone load them to modern day pressures, at the very least they should be making one loading for the antiques and one load capable for metallurgy.
not impressed i dont call that extreme penatration by any means my 180 grain hand loads do much better my 325 grain solids will blow that gel block apart they hit around 1200 fps my 180 grain xtps at 1400 fps will go through the block with a nice mushroom expansion any factory hollow point will beat this
sir I apologize I told you wrong .I found the 44special data and the tests were done by Brian Pearce. He did the testing in 3 category well worth reading. my reloaded44 special self defense 180gr xtp load from 3in barrel is 1050 fps with441 ft/lb, 1100fps with 484 ft/lb. buffalo bore 44special 180gr jhp with 31/4 in barrel 1155fps with 543 ft/lb. 255gr soft cast hp gas check 31/4 barrel 984 fps with548 ft/lb. 190gr soft cast hp 3in barrel 1046 fps with 462ft/lb and 2in barrel with 426 ft/lb . These 3 buffalo bore 44special loads absolutely not to be shot in charter arms but any outher 44special that's modern in good condition. most factory ammunition is weaker loaded for older revolvers and charter arms. hope this will help. Papa wishing you well 😊
my 44special reloads for self defense and hunting out of a rossi model 720 44 special is 180gr xtp cronygraphed 1050- 1100 out of 3in barrel, my Taurus tracker 44mag 4in barrel with 3in rifling, last inch a chamber for gas ports 180gr xtp at 1350 fps .great expansion and retaining weights retrieved from deer sized game and smaller 4 legged pests. your rugers can be safely reloading at higher pressures. i have the data from i think brian enos and another noted western style shooter. i can't find my data right now. i have reloaded 44special testing up to 300gr. papa wishing you well
I am so glad someone did a review on these, I got a one shot 45 lc / 410 derringer short barrel probably 2 inches I think these bullets 598 ft lbs 1410 fps advertised velocity and energy of a federal 125 jhp 357 load I used before, barrel length does effect it, but it will do it's job one shot low recoil low flash they say too for in home defense.
BLUF: Seven minutes worth of useful information in a 14-minute video. Almost the entire second half of this video is an off-camera, stream-of-consciousness monologue, accompanied by an unblinking shot of a motionless gel block. I kept watching and hoping he would get back on topic, but he never did. I know I’m gonna get flamed for not listening to my mother (“if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all”), and I also know that I sometimes ramble myself, so let me offer some constructive criticism: Don’t ever NOT edit a video before posting it. Most of your audience probably does not need to know how long it has been since you last carried a revolver, why you carried it that day, what else you might have carried, or what clothes you were wearing and why. I am a bit obsessive (could you tell?), but most people don’t want to watch a five-minute shot of a motionless gel block either. Editing is what separates good videos from not-so-good ones, and it keeps your focus sharp. Aim for the 10 ring!
I was wondering if you tested anything for in 45 cold that you would use for hunting out of a rifle? I do cowboy action shooting. I load my own but it’s all lead. Have you heard of one called a deer Grenade? I saw some online. Would you test anything like that. Love your videos. I just found your channel and subscribed.
I've reloaded and tested 44special for 30 + years with loads 180gr up to 300gr. my self defense loads are 180gr xtp cronygraphed 1050 to1100 fps right there with buffalo bore ammunition. this bullet wonderful expansion on deer sized game and outher creatures. I've reloaded the 180gr xtp from 850 to 1500fps getting wonderful expansion and devastating vital area damage. with a three inch barrel 44special i would reloaded 255gr hard cast flat face or lswc at 900fps for possibly encounters with wild hogs and black bear . papa wishing you well 😊
If you calibrate that gel, you will find its less dense than fbi gel. Lots of people have said and demonstrated it. The fbi also says they shoot at 70deg. Outside you will find its almost always hotter in the direct sunlight, this makes it less dense too. Get you a crossman 760 to calibrate your gel.
People dont like to hear it but the 44spl and is my favorite round but its 150-200fps more than a 45acp. With a smaller bullet Most 44spl loads are further handicapped because they load old hardcast solids that dont take advantage of modern bullet construction. Skeeter and guys like that swore by those bullets because they were all they had. The solid copper Extreme expander or penetrator would blow their minds, they hadnt even thought about fluted bullets or multipart bonded bullets.
Thank you very much for actually testing 45 Colt, love your videos. The original Army Colt 45 load was 255 grains sitting on top of 40 grains of black powder. This was going at 900-1000fps. It definitely seems like the wide majority of 45C loads are nerfed significantly.
Agreed. I read a lot about factory loads being loaded light in deference to older guns, but it was always my understanding the original loads were quite potent.
@@tacticalheretic9105 It truly is a shame. I am not sure if you reload yourself but the stopping/power potential of 45 Colt is amazing when it’s not being nerfed to hell and back.
the reason is this ammunition is loaded at speed for old colts and reproductions/ clones.reload the same bullets 900 fps in your strong smith big difference. plus loading the serria jacketed hollow cavity is a very destructive bullet. I've reloaded serria pistol and rifle bullets off and on 40 +years among outher brands. if I were loading 45colt self defense rounds I would use serria 180 gr jhc .without looking in my reload manuals I think it can be loaded around 1100fps just look at your primers for flatting .then back down. I'm loading hornady 185gr xtp 1100_ 1150 fps with awesome expansion in water jug tests. .my 44special 3in barrel with 180gr xtp at 1050_1100 fps gets wonderful expansion. devastating on live game. according to the powder you use you might bump your 45colt up to 1150_ 1200fps with minimum primer flattening. that's if you reload. of course stair stepping your charges up.checking primers each step. I greatly enjoyed the video. Papa wishing you well 😊
Just as he is about to ID his best round HE goes off on Ranting and talks about himself and never picks a round, in other words he fails to address what this video was all about and spends all the time kissing himself ......this guy is a comic.....
He is much too impressed with himself....he is the sort of a guy who thinks he is the smartest guy in the room, real annoying type of a person.....loves to hear himself talk, in this case he is just making noise......
This character talks like he is dancing, he talks and he talks but never hits the punch line in a timely manner....this guy is a BORE to listen too.....When he does give some information it gets all clouded up so you can not identify what he is talking about........can not wait till this video is over, he has such an irritating voice....
Hey Guy, have you ever tried Fort Scott Munitions 45 Long Colt 225-grain TUI Ammo? I did not see a video of these rounds on your channel. I would like to see them fired into ballistic gel! Interested in a box?
Descent results, I have a couple of old boxes of the Silvertip rounds. But like mentioned, the Barnes Vor-Tx is my favorite round! FYI: I grew up in Lafayette
I carry these in my Ruger Vaquero 5.5bbl. They are accurate & as your tests prove expand reliably. Have you tested the Buffalo Bore 200 grain gold dot hollow points? They are straight up annihilators!
You're quite welcome. Smith still makes them but only with 6 inch barrels and, yeah, pricey. I got mine used in 1994 for, I want to say, something like $450-ish. Mine originally had an 8 3/8 inch barrel but I had it cut down to 4, which was one of the best decisions I ever made.
