Except that I read all of Frank Herbert's books years before this one was even written. Your comment seems more than a bit dumb, it seems downright idiotic. Go f#ck yourself, Jerkwad.
This guy is so talented. Loved him just finished watching the great work of Art. His ideas are genious. Really though he was the winner. Was SOOOO surprised they didn't pick him. His ideas were amazing throughout the whole show. Hes fantastic!!
Obviously the galleries you frequent are not commercially driven galleries and most likely their owners are more interested in pushing for the development of art (so good for that)-Here in Chicago is almost impossible to find a gallery that it is not depending on painters. I am convinced that painting is dead and as a discipline lost any possibility of making waves long time ago. That someone is using a brush and some oil colors, or acrylics, is not making painting alive, or extending its life. Most painters are not interested in any intellectual analysis of the practice, they only like to paint and are totally indifferent, or hostile to any theoretical argument into the meaning of what they do. I truly believe that what Adorno and Horkheimer presented almost eighty years ago with their book, Dialectic of Enlightenment,is connected to what is happening with painting. The commodification of art an culture is so enormous for this neoliberal market, that the so called “art industry,” just like any corporation, is willing to manipulate, not only art institutions, art critics, art theorists and the market itself to make most people believe that painting is still, not only alive, but also exciting. The reason is very simple, painting is still the most profitable of all disciplines and the one that most people are willing to buy. Go to The Armory show, or Art Basel (very depressing experience by the way) and you will find out that painting is the dominant presence, at least 70% of it. The mega galleries make their millions with the sale of paintings at least in over 80% of their business. Look at Sotheby’s and Christie’s…it is the same issue. This is worrisome and in many ways depressing.
ok read all the books and at the Arya Stark's I just wish they left it alone!!! the mess up the worms and kill off Jessica child again in front of her as if the forgot she was a powerful awaken Bennett gesserit. one word for her would have stop the baron karkonnen dead in his tracks. o wait they did this crap Alot then went with a disney ending... 6 of of ten i will give it a let down for me.
What a great opportunity if you get a place to stay and a studio to work on your art! 🙂 there should be more of these programs where we artists get to do the things we try to do all the time 🙂🙌🏾
I don’t get the hate for the last 2 books, I believe Brian ended the series exactly the way his Father wanted. As a writer myself I have told my family exactly how my story ends as well as the most important scenes I have loved the most. You honestly don’t think Frank and Brian didn’t have long conversations about Dune lol. The last 2 books were very well written and have been trashed unnecessarily. Some fans have even gone as far to say they aren’t even canon, that’s bs. At least this series ended better than the force awakens. 😁
Great review ! I think I’m going to have to re- read this again sometime .( just finished it this week ) I enjoyed it ..but still trying to process it if that makes any sense ..have you re - read Amerika in the years since this review ?
I haven't re-read it since this video. For this video it was the second time I had read it. Maybe I'll have to go back and read it again. It's a complex book and it was never finished so it's hard to figure out what was going on.
Evidently the canadian geese did not get the memo on social distancing. good to hear your voice. You're looking toward the rapids as in Grand Rapids. They were about 1 1/2-2 milled long
Good to see you Dave. Any communication seems cathartic to me, add the exercise and I think you have a healthy attitude in these crazy times. Keep posting and be well.
I've been thinking about the end of Dune a lot recently... What FH gives us with the scattering is essentially a merging of opposites... The Honored Matres: possibly a merging of BG , BT and Fishspeakers for example... Then we have allusions to independent facedancers and seeking machines, possibly of ixian origin... What if the enemy was a merging of Ixians and tleilaxu? Independent FDs with access to thinking machines... and possibly a mass-destruction weapon (which also the HM have...) I don't think BH and KJA were too far off... but they could have made much more of it, given the many allusions FH gave us throughou all the books...
I hope you applied anyway @ocinematique. I've had and been a apart of different shows and exhibitions. I haven't applied to a residency yet but plan to. Check out the requirements but go for it anyway. The least you could get is a No. By the way, I have a normal job to pay for bills as well. We have to push through, work harder at our crafts, and BELIEVE that Greatness will come to pass.
There is so much in Herberts books that have seeped into other novels and movies that you can trace the lineage of so many movie plots and novels back to Dune.
I am afraid to apply for an artistic residency because I have never had an exhibition of my work (did even try to be honest) because I invested all my time on working for living (I had to). Do you think this lack of experience can be a problem If I want now to participate in a residency program?

You are right... indeed there is nothing to lose. For your exhibitions, how did you start, did you send e-mail to the gallery asking if they are interested in your works? I am starting to think to do it... About the residency, I had to write a project to partecipate so I wrote it but at the end the gallery suddenly closed the program... never mind. Thank you for taking your time writing me and sharing positive experience!
Entering local art competitions and getting connected with local art-based groups will help you get started. The main thing(for all of us) is KEEP CREATING AND PUTTING YOUR WORK OUT FOR EVERYONE TO SEE..social media, local shows,....just create so that you can have a healthy portfolio and confidence to submit your work to galleries, residencies, etc.
keep pushing you do create...even if you think you don't have any ideas...they will come. Just keep your hands working and the creativity will flow. That's a note to myself too. lol
I'm reading this book without much knowledge in physics. I can say I understood about 55 percent of this. I think I'll read it again, maybe not since the concept is fairly explained in many videos now, but I can say it's a fairly easy read. My advice, don't read this book after taking physics 3. Which consists of relativity and quantum mechanics.
Go try other books or video instead. This isn't THAT hard, it just takes time to learn. I've been addicted to these for almost 6 months and now I can understand most of it. Try reading "for dummies" stuff (I know it's bloody expensive, but find some free websites of it, it helps a lot) Reading this twice isn't going to help much. And also, if you don't enjoy it, don't mess with it. It's "art" not cartoon. It needs passion.
The books were written for people who wanted to link the missing tidbits that were mentioned but never extrapolated upon in the original Frank books. You cannot say you knew what was going to happen entirely because it is never explained what happened during the War of Assassins.
+Nik Manee While I like other books written by Brian Herbert, this one felt like just a cash grab and completely unnecessary. I knew where the characters would be at the end. If Frank Herbert wanted to explain this more, he would have. If you want to know more about the feud between House Harkonnen and Atreides, read the Butlerian Jihad trilogy or the Dune prequel House trilogy. Much better books written by the same authors. Sorry, but I thought this book was garbage and totally unwanted and unnecessary.
I don't speak German. I don't think I would gain anything more out of it by reading it in it's original language, because it would take a lifetime to gain the proficiency in German for me to understand it as well as I understand English. Plus, I speak French and Mandarin and it isn't enjoyable to me to read in those languages because it takes me four times as long to read something.
I just ordered this book. Hopefully I like it! I ordered several science and pseudo science books. I am interested on theories of parallel dimensions. The ending of Bioshock Infinite video game is about parallel dimensions (well it plays a major part).
I hated the movies, the books are much different. One of the best stories I've read (oh welI, don't read that much), I LOVED the series! BTW I read them first, then watched the movies. FYI, I read the 4 books in a week on my laptop. Now I'm re-reading them because there's a 5th one! ;D Wanted to buy them too, but they are rare and hard to find.
If quantum mechanics is right, if I sat there for eternity trying to walk through the wall, probability says that eventually I will be able to walk through the wall.
I am in the middle of The God Emperor of Dune right now. It is capturing my imagination more than the original Dune book. I am not saying that I don't get lost from time to time but not to the point where I have lost the plot thread. What really sparked my interest most is the idea of the Golden Path and I hope it is elaborated more in the next two books. I am so bored of dystopian futures where there is no hope whatsoever I would like to see something more positive, although I know that the path to such a goal is seldom without encountering those who cannot see its greatness. They are shortsighted. We are in dire need to find our own Golden Patth that is devoid of superstition, fear, and hate. From the Stolen Journals: Religion suppresses curiousity.
I don't want to spoil things for you, but I will say that I think the Dune series would have ended a bit differently if Frank Herbert would have lived long enough to finish it. I think you get the idea of what he was going for with the final two books written by his son, but what is missing is the explanation and motivation. So, I think you will get your wish and not get it at the same time.
I am very eager to see the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune. I don't know if you have seen any of his films (El Topo or The Holy Mountain) but they can be very pretentious at times so I am a little spectical that he could have pulled off an epic like Dune without it being a bombastic exercise in religious and mystical alegory. It might have been a masterpiece. Science fiction has really been dragged down since Star Wars to the childish level. Dune is (or should be) an adult film,
