I question the grouting the whole well here is why. In many areas you must drill a large pocket below the water sand. If you grout down to the gravel pack in these cases you would be grouting off the watersand. My well here in WV the watersand was 35 feet but its low producing so the well itself is 105 feet this gives plenty of volume to make the well viable. Grouting the way you describe i wouldnt have any water. Here we install a surface casing to bedrock and grout the surface casing only. Then a 4 inch liner pipe is installed to bottom but not grouted then as you did the gravel is put in up over the screen. Anything below the bedrock will not contaminate the well and will be potable.so grouting past bedrock is a complete waste.
@willeyco4458
@willeyco4458 4 года назад
On Delmarva we drill in all sand and silts. Its imperative to seal the grounds surface off from all the aquifers encountered during the drilling process. Our regulations require grouting the entire hole. Theres always space between the casing and the borehole. Even if its a very small amount, bacteria and contaminants can drain down the side of the casing and into the aquifer.
@kenjett2434
@kenjett2434 4 года назад
@@willeyco4458 different areas and different structural strata does require different ways to construct a safe well. But the one thing that seems should be common no matter where it is, is bedrock. Bedrock is a impermeable layer of thick rock of at least 5 feet. No surface contamination can get past it long as it is properly sealed. So even though you have alot of sand or a strata prone to collapse if you set a surface casing into bedrock and grout it in to surface. They will not be anything from the outside ever get in. The exception to this is when drilling deeper for oil and gas in this case surface vasing must be set well below all fresh water aquifers and cemented back to surface. This is to protect from contamination from the drilling processes and the oil and gas that lays deeper below. Drilling has bern my life a 3rd generation in the field.
@willeyco4458
@willeyco4458 4 года назад
Bedrock is incredibly deep in some areas like Delmarva. No water wells that I know of on the lower part of Delmarva are placed in or under bedrock. The northern part of the peninsula has much shallower bedrock. We confine wells on the lower shore by placing them under clay layers. Clay layers are what separate our aquifers. Drilling conditions change dramatically depending on location. Thanks for watching.

Do you have to mix the grout to a certain viscosity before you pump it to seal the hole? I think I remember years ago in New Mexico that grout had to meet something called a Marsh Funnel viscosity specification before you sealed hole to total depth.

Is a seal required on top of the gravel pack before you grout? In my line of work, we set piezometers for Geotechnical studies, and often I’ll require a few feet of hole plug on top of the filter sand to prevent mud/grout from getting to my filter sand - this may be overkill

Good Evening - I live in a residential neighborhood constructed in 1970. At that time there were no public sewer lines in the neighborhood. All homes at that time had septic tanks buried it their front yard. Around 1977, the township put in a public sewer line and everyone in the neighborhood hooked into it. All septic tanks were left in the ground. I want to have a well drilled in my backyard but the only access is through the front yard and over the part of the front yard where the unused septic tank is located. My concern is that the extremely heavy drilling equipment with cause the unused septic tank in my front yard to collapse, potentally resulting in damage to the drilling truck. My question for you is whether there is well drilling equipment, including trucks, that are light enough to avoid crushing my front yard?

In Delaware, any abandoned tank or vault of some kind must be either removed or filled with sand. That helps prevent these types of issues. There are well rigs light enough to travel across unstable ground but I doubt any driller will want to run their incredibly expensive Rig across or near a known potential for damage. Thanks for the quiestion

If you plan on living in that house for a while, you might be better off to just deal with that old septic tank now. Those old septic tanks are typically made of concrete and of varying quality. If you have seen a 50 year old concrete sidewalk or driveway, that would give you some idea of what condition it might be in. You could probably get an excavating company to remove the lid and fill it with sand and replace the lid for less than $1000 depending on your area,
