For me, Contact is by far the best sci-fi film ever made, and it is no coincidence it was written by one of the most amazing people to have ever lived: Carl Sagan.

The drop - lighting and scenery looks like if she was falling into hell. Also - when she faces the shaking chair -> the shoulder supports look like horns. Angry, threatening, evil demon.

I can't be more grateful by your videos, Mike. You have opened my eyes to things I "feel" when I see a movie but don't know why it is right or wrong, and it is all about the unconscious things that constitute us as human beigns over the history, repeting itself but in contemporary ways. Thank you🙏

An excellent movie I have ever seen in my whole life. But personally I always think that Ellie should more than just deserve to have first contact to an alien life, I wish that she met the real God in the form of her father, and He revealed her everything about everything that she wanted to know as a scientist. And then she was sent back to earth to tell everyone the prophecy that she had from God but nobody in the scientific inquiry believed her because she had no single shred of proof. And when she met Palmer she as an atheist could understand how to be in Palmer's position as the religious believer. It's like prophecy of Isra Miraj story in Islamic religion but it will be more science fiction. I know it sound crazy and ridiculous, I'm also an agnostic and don't believe in religion too. But I want to see this movie will be remaked that way and it continue to be my wish.

Mike should...just go and create a movie. Or I guess, if we UNDERSTOOD the formulas that pertain meaning...then it's us that we should go and create a movie... :\

"A higher power intervened"-in this case, S.R. Hadden, the billionaire. Don't be misled by false interpretations. The aliens, understanding Ellie's potential fear, appeared to her as her father to make the encounter less intimidating. When film reviewers or critics see things in a movie that were never intended by the filmmaker, it's often referred to as overinterpretation or reading too much into it. This can also be described as projection, where the reviewer projects their own ideas, biases, or interpretations onto the film. Another term is apophenia, which is the tendency to perceive patterns or meanings in random or unrelated data, though this term is more general and not specific to film criticism.

@@mikehilldesignstudio There are key symbolic themes in Contact, chief among them, science versus faith (the tension between objective truth and fantasy). It's funny how many people ignore the twist that comes when it’s revealed that Ellie's recording device, which was with her during the journey, recorded 18 hours of static-despite the fact that only a few seconds had passed on Earth. This discrepancy suggests that Ellie did, in fact, experience something that took place over an extended period, even though it was not perceived by anyone else. Many people often prefer to see fantasy over reality for a variety of psychological, emotional, and cultural reasons. The film does not blur the line between what is real and what is imagined. The Carl Sagan story is clear to those who value the truth.

I've been using this film as 'company' whenever I find myself awake in the middle of the night. By now have it memorized. I could watch it silence and know every word they're saying, or I could just have the audio going it on while trying to fall back to sleep and 'see' every scene in my mind's eye.

I remember getting to see Contact 3 times in theaters when it came out. Incredible movie, still one of my favorites. The chair wasn't in the design - they added it bc they didn't trust that she would be safe without it. Shows what happens when we don't surrender fully - when we try to use our own wisdom to protect ourselves instead of completely trusting. This whole movie was about finding God. I didn't until 22 years after I saw it, but now it makes sense...

Love everything said here--especially using the words "spiritually enriching." I'm not saying I need every story to have an explicit moral, but I want stories to be *nourishing* to the soul--honest in some way. I think it would have been cool if the building process of the time machine had been MUCH more complex. There would be several HUGH gigafactories and manufaction facilities NEXT TO the actual time machine. There would also be supercuts to other locations in the country and abroad. It would be an endeavor only possible to be achieved in cooperation of basically the entire planet. After all, we're talking about a technology quantum leap skipping hundreds if not thousands of years here.

I'm surprised he compared the gimbal rings to Cracken and never thought of the biblical descriptions of "angels", which mention interlocked rotating wheels, just like in this contraption. This is why I'm always dubious about such symbology analyses - because symbols need context. It's not enough to see similarities and random associations. Reminds me of the fictional lecture Prof. Langdon gave in the "Da Vinci Code" movie about the language of symbols.

Would have been a really good movie, if not for the flawed writing. They show the span of female character's life and all the roadblocks and logical time constraints... but she never gets old! She never has children or any of the human thing real life sandbags you with. When she takes her fantastic journey, she looks fresh from her college classes...not a day seemed to pass for her. All that transpires in this story, just seemed it would be too long for a human life span before contact, but it all gets wiped into place. The discovery of the messages from space, the decoding of it and understanding what it is, that and governments and scientific communities reaching agreements in such a short time, and also, the planning and building ... I could go on and on, but also the terrorist act that set all the hard work back to zero. I always felt the movie would have been so much better if the shoed Jodi Foster's charter, get a little gray, have some laugh lines, slow down little in her step, showing her have to take some kind of pills that comes with aging in this day and age. But she just ended fresh and pristine, not a mark on her no children or grandchildren to stress over leaving to take on her life's goal. That would have made her journey so much more poignant, since they made the father such a presence in her life. I just could not just buy, that this huge building and engineering and resource demanding thing could happen in such a short time. and that ruined most of the move for me.
