Hi all - I was a big Dementieva stan during her career. I got disappointed to not see more highlights of hers on YT, so I took it upon myself to do something about it. Hope you enjoy.

Myskina might not be a “legend” but she’s definitely an ICON! These lightening fast carpet courts were just a joy to watch in the 90’s and 00’s - until mid/slow paced hard courts took over!

Настя лучшая. Моя любовь в теннисе навсегда. Любил её обводящие. Она напоминала игрой Кафельникова.

Always a weird match up between these two almost as if their strengths cancelled each other out and we are left with the stronger of the two weaknesses. Early in their careers it became Jankovic winning the match ups off the forehand which is crazy. Later on in their careers Wozniacki won their matches through mentality and conditioning. For me though fit and focussed JJ is a better player, particularly off the forehand when comparing to Wozniackis forehand. Bh to BH pretty even, two of the best BHs ever.

i know this is a big IF - but i do think Elena could have won the French if she played this good in the 2004 final. As for Lindsay, imo, she should have won, or at least has the best opportunity to win: 1999 AO, 2004 US, 2005 USO, 2005 Wimbledon, 2005 AO.

This was the QFs no? She injured her ankle in the next match. I think the injury ironically gave Serena thar boost to outperform everyone for the rest of the year. I still think her 2002 season is the best level of tennis I have seen on the WTA.

As a huge fan of Sugiyama and (of course) Dementieva, I can't recall this match in my memory! Ai was such a formidable player, especially in 2003, despite her lack of powerfull groundstrokes. Great net skills, wonderful footwork.

Early 2000’s Serena is one of the most explosive and dynamic athletes I’ve ever seen. Grateful to have witnessed it but only wish we’d be able to see her play like this in better video quality. It’s impressive how much she achieved by refining other parts of her game bc her athleticism/movement was never quite the same after her knee surgery in 2003. Took a minute for her to readjust in the couple of seasons that followed.

@chriscze6153 3 месяца назад
Not sure what you mean about video quality, you can see the ball clearly, as well as what's going on, but yes, her matches tend to have lower video res than many other top athletes at the time. Don't know why.

@@chriscze6153oh no I didn’t mean your videos I meant from her era in general. And yeah, her sister weirdly has a better documented career on RU-vid via highlights and full matches than she does.

@chriscze6153
@chriscze6153 3 месяца назад
@@ism7588 she had a rib injury in early 2007, changed her backhand forever. I think her forehand was already transitioning to be more solid in 2006 but still had firepower when necessary

Sugiyama, as small as she was, could go toe to toe with the big hitters of her time. Good, clean ballstriker, took it early, anticipated well. Elena throwing her racket like that wasn't something she did often. Some fun rallies here and there, a nice throwback.

Jankovic battled her way through AO R1and US R2 (maybe not by tactical genius) but with pure determination and I was on the edge of my seat for both of these matches rooting for her... while shouting DEFENCE! DEFENCE!

Serena looked the same in 2004 physically but the time away from the game did coat her tennis in rust for quite a while. Her forehand was a mess in 2004 and even in this match, her tennis is indecisive and erratic. She was almost playing on muscle memory and just played the big points better. What a fantastic match though and definitely a learning curve for Mauresmo to finally break through at the majors two years later. Some incredible net plays by her.

Serena was furious after her loss to Justin Henin in that controversy over the hand raising for a 1st Serve at the French Open. She went into this Wimbledon with fire in her eyes... With all eyes heading towards a rematch with Henin in the semi Finals (Context for why she played so well in this tournament)
