My mom was a Slav. We always watched this show as a family when I was growing up. My mom got up and left the room when she saw this. The Slavic people don't deserve this ridicule. I hear Poland insulted quite a bit. If you know their history, you'd see the Polish people kicked ass. Not stupid or ignorant or lazy. The slavs are underrepresented in this country. I am ashamed that Carol Burnett show would deliberately insult all the Slavic nations in Europe with this. I used to think she was better than this.

@@searayser Thank you. It was that it hurt my mom. I think she was fed up w the insults. She was Czech. I didn't even bother to wake her up to see SNLs Wild and Crazy guys from Czechoslovakia. Those characters claimed to have escaped in 1968 after the Soviet invasion. Those who escaped and ended up here were often drafted and sent to Vietnam. The history of oppression and ridicule serves no one and no nation well. My mom has been dead for decades. No insult can hurt her now.
If your mother left the room when this was shown, then _she did not understand the joke,_ because what it makes fun of is good old Soviet Аэрофлот, and, from what I can tell, this joke pretty much hits the nail on the head, this airline really was held together by rubber strings and wire, but only if they could afford it, and manned by personnel likely kicked out from other enterprises for a lack of qualification. I heard stories about people transporting their livestock on such flights, so, why feel offended by this skit?
@@mediocreman6323 You have a point but it was her feeling. People sometimes react emotionally and not logically. My dad was German (they married in 1939! Tense times). I don't think she was sophisticated enough to get it and there were no other Czechs around where we lived. Maybe they should have said Soviet and not Slavic. Only comedy variety show left is SNL. They all died because they are too expensive to produce in the modern day and and age as I heard Carol Burnett said in a much later interview. Read her biography. It's a riot and it was just by the skin of her teeth her show made it on the air! I grew up in the 60's and there was a myriad of variety shows on prime time that were funny and had clean jokes kids could even watch. Glad I grew up then.

You can put on a funny skit while also betraying your ignorance, and this skit is an example. "Who wants to go to Warsaw?" Plenty of Soviet Russians coveted transfers to the "satellite countries," which had stronger economies and a better standard of living. And somewhat more political freedom. Poland gets ridiculed for being so quickly overrun by the Wehrmacht in 1939, but Poland and her allies were responsible for those stronger economies. In 1920, Lenin decided to regain the territories of the old Russian Empire, recently lost in WW I. The Poles under Pilsudski had just seized independence, and they formed an alliance with neighboring nations to beat back this first-ever aggression by the USSR's Red Army. (The Poles had, um, somewhat provoked the war by trying to take Kyiv!) It was an archaic war with battles often fought between groups of horse cavalry. It was short and devastating on all sides, but Lenin failed, and at the end Moscow and Smolensk lay undefended, preserved only by the exhaustion of the victors. Pilsudski was not trained in military strategy, but he was a natural. He realized he could not defend Warsaw from the approaching Red Army--so he attacked and won! And that decided the war. That is why the Slavic nations west of Russia remained unhampered by Soviet-style economic management until after World War II. I got all this from Adam Zamoyski's book "Warsaw 1920: Lenin's Failed Conquest of Europe." The detailed descriptions of the battles are admirably thorough if tedious, but there are brilliant scenes, like the brief fight between Captain Leon Raciecki and the Cossack Kuzma Kruchkov (or Kryuchkov).
This is from almost 60 years ago. My read is that the humor, clumsy as it is, was poking fun at the backwards state of industry and services behind the iron curtain under the yoke of the Soviet Union. If anything, this is a skit exaggerating long-suffering people resigned to their plight, and making do under those circumstances. Maybe resonates a bit too much with widespread jokes that were at the expense of some eastern european groups, but I think that wasn't the intended focus.
Agreed. I flew Aeroflot in 1989 when it was still the USSR and the seats were broken. You could push the button to lean back but it wouldn't come back up unless you manually pulled the seat back up yourself. Also the "overhead compartment" was really only a shelf, and when the plane dipped, things were falling off into the aisle. Which happened more than once during each flight. lol

I remember flights just like this with US Airways, American Eagle,( subsidiary of American Airlines) and Spirit Airlines. It's not just Air Koryo and this skit that make a 1 star airline or below. Plenty of US Carriers are no stars. To this day I will fly only Airbus when I fly. Boeing forget about it. Too crapy! American and Chineese assembly of planes sucks!
I was going to make your same comment about an (East German) Interflug flight once from Vienna to Berlin in the late 80's. Only the front portion of the seats were attached to the floor. That episode of turbulence was like being on one of those mechanical bulls!

I remember how simple life was back then. I could drink beer at age fourteen while baby sitting little kids in the neighborhood and get paid for it. All while watching simple skits on TV. Boy life has changed. Now, everybody has a problem with everything. You can't just be and be free.

Disgusting unfunny and downright stupid skid which directly the beans and insults the script goes way over the pail. It's disgusting and I don't know why Carol feels a need to dump on Slavic people. There's nothing funny in the skit it's an abuse of many of her fans who come from that background and a slap in the face to them.. would she do a skit on African jungle airlines showing a a black African jungle stewardess with bare breasts, and then showing a pilot with an animal bone through his nose. This so-called kind of comedy a direct slap into the face of ethnic groups. The time for this garbage was long over even when this show came out.. I have always really liked Carol Burnett I have liked her monologues she has great personal charm and her singing is pretty good.
