These Japanese puzzle boxes are amazing. The craftsmanship that goes into everyone is 2nd to none.. I have managed to complete the 54 step box and would like to try and get hold of the 72 step box had some time in the future if I ever find one at the right price :-)

I absolutely love Japanese puzzle boxes. They are so skilfully made and they are just mind-boggling.. the biggest one I’ve done so far is the 54 step puzzle and I would love to try it and do the 72 piece but they are so rare to get unfortunately

I have often wondered why so many of the Japanese puzzle boxes use the Koyosegi pattern. It must be like 75 or 80% of all the boxes made. There are nicer patterns and opportunities to create new ones, but I have not seen a new pattern in a really long time. Why is this the case?
@yamanakakumikiworks3129
@yamanakakumikiworks3129 4 месяца назад
Actually, there are puzzle boxes with various patterns. However, it seems that Koyosegi is the most popular. We would like to make new patterns if we have time.

@@yamanakakumikiworks3129 Yes agreed and thank you for responding! I have collected maybe 40 boxes based on the marquetry, not the mechanism. Just looking for something new. I thought perhaps the artists making the marquetry were different than the artists making the boxes.

It takes time to make marquetry. I don't have time to make it because I'm making boxes. When I have more time, I plan to make new patterns and designs.

With these star patterns, the grain in some wedges is perpendicular to the grain in other wedges. How come they don't break when planed?
@yamanakakumikiworks3129

Since each part is small, we believe that it will not be easily broken. I think the larger the parts, the more likely they will break.

Yes, close in reverse order…?
@alexdemonet
@alexdemonet 9 месяцев назад
If only it was that easy! Do you close the top completely when starting in reverse? If not how far do you close it before proceeding? If the box is closed on top all the way I get stuck at step 15 & 16 because the top is already closed & step 14 won’t move. If I leave the top slightly open I don’t know how much to leave it open. I’ve played around with it but if it’s open I can’t perform step 20 in reverse because the open top is blocking its upward movement and none of the following steps move. Maybe I’m missing something obvious I can’t seem to figure out how to put it back! Please help! 😅
