I can confirm, as some who has way too many hours in this game I've only seen this once. why does he need THIS many attacks, he's the first boss, wouldn't Godrick make more sense for having a lot of different attacks

Sorry to burst your bubble but that move aint rare, it just happens when those first 2 moves happens and u manage to run away from them or dodge 5 meters back
Ah, that's not rare. It's distance-based. Boss won't do it unless it thinks you're moving away to heal. Most people are either right up in the boss or far away shooting it so it makes sense why folks may not have seen that move.
He can do that if you’re standing in front like that. That’s why you are getting hit by quick daggers, those are front position follow ups. Position to his side after those combos and you can get some big charged attacks without risk of him following up after some of those swings
