Your story sounds like mine. Two classes later, still not riding. My struggle was the Uturn box. Lost all confidence in myself. Is instructor offered to stay and help me privately, but second time instructor kept reminding me of my need to complete turns and I got in my head about failing. Cried, didn't finish, lost money and pride. But I'm not giving up even though I am 61 I will do it.

Nice video! Back in the day (like '88 to '91) I rode in the rain & rode on roads that still had snow on 'em. I was an idiot back then. I do miss riding, so I watch videos to live vicariously through others. 🤘🏻

Great ride. So fabulous to be immersed in creation. Yes pack a charger... and a map. Honestly you don't need the thump thump in the background. In fact it detracts.

You’re the BEST! Now, teach me! Lol. I’d like to attach a sidecar to my Honda Rebel 300 and then in that side car I’d like my Red Siberian Husky, Romeo, to ride along with me! 😂 But, first I need to learn how to ride. 😜 🍃✌🏽🍃

I need to do my MSF.. my biggest concern is my brain. I'm not worried about driving a bike, a bit of practice and muscle memory work should be all it takes. But the lines and the cones... man I just know they'll confuse me. My brain just isn't equipped to handle the confusing mixture of lines and cones and following a path that isn't super obvious like a road.

This was one of my biggest worries! Try when you can to not be the leader of your group and that will help, also make your instructor aware and they should be able to help you or show you the exercise on paper which helps too.

@@KomotoVlogs I certainly hope so, I'd hate to fail simply because I can't stay in some imaginary lines. LOL Thanks for the advice, I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this. Like, it SHOULD be the easiest part.

There are some dudes who played football in high school and never learned how else to teach a skill except for yelling and unnecessarily putting obstacles in your way. Glad you got to a better course with better instructors. I’m taking an msf course at a Harley Davidson dealership so hopefully they aren’t assholes over there!

Thank you for making these learning how to ride videos. I felt just like Nina did and watching her go through this learning process and seeing where she is now gave me the confidence to go through with getting my own bike. This morning I got a 2023 Honda Rebel 500 ABS SE and love it. Don't know how to ride it yet but in time I will.

Do you wear earplugs when you ride? I've heard people say you need them when riding due to the road noise being loud enough to cause damage
@KomotoVlogs
@KomotoVlogs Месяц назад
I personally don’t but we did just do a 1000 mile trip and I wish I had ear protection for that ride, I didn’t notice any discomfort while riding but then after taking my helmet off at stops I had the same feeling in my ears as when you exit a concert so probably should’ve been wearing ear protection!

I have a 2022 Rebel 1100 manual and that’s how I found Burch’s channel in 2022. After a long absence from his channel, I saw your new 500 (and the yellow tank ❤) and the road trip, then this video showed up in my rec list. I realize this was last year, but congrats on your license and riding! Instructors make or break us. I’ve taken the class 3x, 1st to get licensed (at age 52 woo hooo!) and 2nd as a seat filler when they only had 1 person that weekend. I became good friends with both instructors and 1 became my bestie. Participants didn’t know we were doing the road skills test either. It was so fun and rewarding. 3rd time was at the Harley dealership in Spring, TX. I was an advanced rider but I took the course with my daughter for a daughter/mother weekend. I traveled 600 miles to be there. They promised we would be together through the course. It was horrible and your boot camp description pretty much sums it up. No breaks, heavy sighs/eye rolling /shaming when asking for a bathroom break, and they separated us with our answers to 1 question: who here is interested in buying a Harley. I said no because I already had bikes. My daughter said yes. Those who said yes got nice bikes. Those who said no got trashy bikes that were falling apart. My bike’s shifter was broken and even though there was an unused better condition Rebel, they wouldn’t let me use it. Both groups were equally yelled at and I walked out mid-day on day 2. Others left, too. Nobody got a refund. Half didn’t pass. And you can probably guess that my daughter never rode again. She’s okay with it although I felt that she really wanted to. The course was a gift to her from her boyfriend. I’m glad you went back and more so that you got Miss V who clearly wants riders to succeed. Subscribed.

I withdrew after Day One of the course at Harley. I felt very much as you did - overheated, overwhelmed, and exhausted by the bike itself. I'm 61 and a complete newbie (and a 5'4" woman) and I also feel that I can do this after some time and practice (and looking into a different course even though I hate to leave that money on the table).Thanks so much for sharing your experiences - it gives me faith in myself!!

I failed my test last week. So frustrated. I failed the first test which was that zig zag around the training cones. The whole course was a nightmare to me because of the heavy and big motorcycle. I was the whole time tip toes and I hurt my wrist.

Learning to ride is not an easy thing! If you have a bike available to you, get some parking lot practice in. Watch lots of videos and stretch as you can!! The clutch and brake use muscles you don’t normally use so you’re going to be tired and sore! Look for other classes in your area, there should be a couple bikes in the class that are smaller than others and you can request one from your coach if it’s available!
@mark222b
@mark222b Месяц назад
My Harley class was also on the street 500. I think that’s the worst bike to work on. Bike is heavy, clutch is heavy. The money is worth it since you learned some lessons. Just keep practicing. Instructors won’t pass people who are not ready… it’s safer that way.

Good job, just remember to use your back brake first then apply your front brake. Do not use your front brake first at slow speeds or suddendly or your front end will turn and you will [hopefully not of course} drop your bike. Way to go young lady!!

I have always been an anxious person. Had day 1 today, I sucked. I have ridden around my dad’s bike (ninja 400) and have gotten REALLY good with the clutch and super comfortable. Today the clutch felt like a rock on the bike they had me use. I had to squeeze practically as hard as I can to engage the clutch. The throttle felt wobbly. I have never had an issue with the throttle. I was so upset after getting home. The instructors were jerks. And no I don’t mean just cause they were yelling, they were MAD at me. I was stalling so much and couldn’t understand why. I can do it on another bike but not on this Janky bike I guess. It was not fun. I was stalling like 4 times just trying to get going, it was embarrassing. I’m only 16 but gosh this day felt like a wreck. I am most definitely gonna fail tmrw but whatever!

Wow I'm sorry you had such an awful time at the Harley range. I actually had a great time doing the Harley course but you are right about it being compressed for time. But I had a small class (6) and a great instructor. We also had numerous breaks for water, bathroom and snacks. We also had an hour and a half for lunch. My instructor was very patient and very chill which helped calm my anxiety down. And they were great with the female riders too. Everyone was super supportive. I just made a video about my experience and have been watching other's to compare their experiences.

I just finished the HD New Rider Course. I had two great instructors, lots of personal coaching, no yelling, frequent breaks... Sorry you didn't have the same high-quality training I got. Mine was at the HD dealership in Madison, Alabama. We used their training bikes (mid-sized sport bikes.)

Considering you didn't quit and had a thorough reflection, I'd say that wasn't a waste of $400. The biggest learning curve i had was the cadence in gear shifting. My husband showed me in a parking lot, its second nature now, but it was definitely a few sessions before grasping it, thought id never get it! Way to stick it out and keep riding.

My input here is beware of talking yourself out of going out for a ride due to having confidence issues or you may end up just never riding. Plan a route and time of day such that you are unlikely to encounter situations that may be the cause of your anxiety. Put your gear on, even if you are still unsure, go out to your bike and sit on it. Hey at this point you may as well go out even if it's a 5 minute ride around the block. As a new rider, arriving home after a good ride, not perfect just good, is a great confidence booster.
