Oh sure the first day is fine. The worst part comes after that first day when your body kicks into healing mode. It’s been a month since my open left inguinal hernia surgery and I still limp when I walk and it still hurts a little bit. When you run out of those pain killers get ready for maximum pain.
Great video. Nice add to the toolbox. Biggest things to remember in these types of trainings. First, how do we prevent this. Solid 360s by everyone on the fireground and identification of basement or crawlspace involvement is critical. “Searching for origin” from inside is asking for basement collapse. Second, is the technique actually viable. If you can’t do it blind and with fire gloves on, will it actually work. Third, is the location viable. In the overwhelming amount of basement collapses, the hole the person went through isn’t a viable option. Either it is a blowtorch coming through the hole ( why it collapsed to start with) or the edges are too unstable to support multiple people’s weight or the hole is too small. Remember the hole may “flex” as the weight pushes the firefighter through, and will be smaller as the edges return to start point. If there is heat through the hole, the firefighter will most likely move away from hole to escape heat. Most fall throughs do not incapacitate the firefighter). These factors render most through the floor recovery drills as useless outside the drill ground.
I had same as you. Bilateral, open inguinal. The diff between you and I? And why you handling it and I am in agony? PAIN PILLS. You got em, I dont. Even BEFORE surgery I was in a lot of pain. Ive had kidney stone surgery, which is the worst pain a human can have. (pregnant women have said they would gladly have 10 more choildren before another kidney stone). I have a boody suit (tattoo), so I know pain. B it when its up there at 8 or above? Its bad! I was told to take tylenol. Then mlotrin. Then both together. NO RELIEF. Then I was given celebrex whjich did nothong but prob cause harm. My advice to any1 getting oen ingiuonal surgery is to make sure your Dr. will treat your pain. I was promised and still lied to but thats out of our hands. But be warned, the Drs will say yea yea Il take care of you, then youre on a couch unable to mov e passing out from pain. And this pain will last at least 4 days!! Im on day 7 today anmd its FINALLY gettking less painful. But I iced it 15 min everey hour for the 1st 3 days, walked around the hpouse as instructed despute the pain, and did everything like eat healthyt anmd rest too.
I am Having open inguinal surgery on July 3rd and have a concert scheduled July 23rd. Was thinking a 5 hour drive to concert then hotel 3 days and then 5 hours back. 19 days after surgery. Im thinking to cancell concert. Whats ur opinion my friend? Thankyou for ur video.
You make it sound like a walk in the park. I wasn't as lucky at all. I had trouble urinating for 3 days after my surgery and got constipated from the pain meds. It was miserable. Super painful and uncomfortable. I am on the fifth day now i can finally walk without the constant pulling sensation and pain in my groin. I had laparoscopic double hernia repair and I am 41 years old and healthy. Everybody will have a different experience for sure.
I was up every half hour during the night trying to urinate a thimble full, chose to do that than the dreadful catheter. Yes urinating was the big problem for me but everything else went well. Still getting that hernia pain when I do push ups however.
Felt about the same as you after the first day . Also walked a lot on the second day a lot makes you feel better. Agree take stool softeners asap. Did have more soreness and bruising and Day 3. Testicular swelling but ice helped.
Hi Jim, thank you for making this video. I’m 58 and in the same situation you were in with bilateral inguinal hernias. I’ve watched a lot of videos with people saying it was excruciating pain after surgery, as you can imagine I’m quite terrified of going thru the surgery. Can’t decide between open or laparoscopic as I’m hearing bad pain stories on both. I’ve been through open heart surgery and hoping that if I can get thru that maybe this won’t be as bad as the stories I’m seeing here. You are one of the rare encouraging videos here, again thank you.
Like you, I was terrified after watching RU-vid videos. Listen to your doctor. I just had laparoscopic robotic inguinal one sided surgery done, on day four now and even after day one, I had discomfort but never took narcotic. Do the surgery because the alternative could be strangulation of the hernia and a trip to the ER; it could be life threatening. Any temporary post op pain is worth it, trust me. You'll do fine.
My third surgery ended up being laparoscopic and the healing was much quicker. I had to have my right side repaired 3 times. I think it was the surgeon that didn’t do a good job the first two times.
Hi, I know this is a old post, Hello, I had open surgery. Did you experience having a hard bulge at the end of the incision site? I had my surgery about 2 weeks ago.
Hi Jim. I just saw your video on the CNC mag holster. Great job!! I have recently started making kydex holsters and am interested in purchasing your mold. Can not access your website. Please respond so that I can purchase one.
Hello Jim, I am going to get the double inguinal surgery in early August. I just got knee surgery a week ago for a meniscus tear. I am kind of nervous about getting it done because I also watched videos where guys were talking about excruciating pain but after watching your video, I feel less nervous. Thanks for that. My question is my hernia on the left side is smaller then the one on the right side, did your Dr. recommend just doing the large one and doing the small one if it gets bigger in a few years ? My thinking is, I might as well do them both instead of going through the surgery again. What kind of laxative did you take ? Thank you and God bless
Dannyel Ferreira I’m so sorry for not responding I didn’t see the notification for your post. If you want to contact me via email I can get with you on ordering a set.
Hey Jim. I just wanna say thank you for the video. honestly I'm fucking freaking the Fuck out!!! I popped a inguinal hernia a week ago from today during work and I knew something was wrong when It happened. I'm worried that I might have two. I thought they filled the belly with air and only made tiny incisions?? Lukegrigg@gmail.com thanks again
This seems to be one of the best alternatives to the Nance knot I've seen so far. I've seen a lot of crews trying to come up with new improved ways of bringing a firefighter up through a floor over the years. The Nance knot was designed so that: #1 it could be accomplished with a minimal amount of equipment found on every piece of fire apparatus ( 1 rope ) #2 It was designed to be easy to tie and secure to a downed firefighter ( can be easily accomplished in zero visibility ). #3 It was designed to bring the firefighter up through the same hole he/she feel through ( reduced profile with the hands over the head ). #4 It was designed to be used on a conscious or unconscious person. I think most crews have forgot this or they were never taught this. I think this method meets all of the above criteria except for the reduced profile with the hands over the head. I also have some doubts on how effective this will be on a truly lifeless body. There's a big difference between carrying or lifting a lifeless body vs a conscious person or dummy. I think this method is worth experimenting with. However, I still feel the original Nance knot is the best method and the main method every firefighter should be able to tie.
This technique came about because of a trapped firefighter that could not be rescued. We simply made a training video for our department and posted it for everyone else to see. This technique as shown is the result of testing and improvement. It is very effective and quick to put into action. The best method for hand placement is thumbs up hand over hand. Thanks and happy drilling!
Definitely taking this to the station next shift, has this been proven/tested in action? Also what's the best hand placement for pull teams? Hand over hand with thumbs up or down?
One of the better benders I have seen on youtube,,,maybe a couple of springs for return on the jack would make it easier to use...good work fyerfighter.
If your talking about the spring back of the bend you have to compensate by bending a little past were you want it. Then it will come to rest at the right spot.
great job!...how about a quick video with some closeups of the bender showing components working so we can duplicate the machine always wanted a tubing bender ..wouldve helped in my coupe build...
Respond to this video... No I don't have the plans any more. It is similar to the protools bender and in fact uses the protools dies. The difference between the two is this one bends from the bottom and not the top. Hope this helps.
