Firstly thanks for all the great videos. Amazing info! I actually live not too far from you, Stoney Creek side of Hamilton. I'd be interested in seeing if you have any long term issues with the RTL-SDR V5 (nooelec NESDR SMArt). This was my first SDR receiver. I've used a bunch of different SDR software with it. I run it continuously for a while using AIS-Catcher. After a few days it stopped working, and now even though it connects to the computer, and the software sees the hardware, it doesn't receive anything on any band. I replaced it with "RTL-SDR Blog V4 R828D RTL2832U 1PPM TCXO SMA Software Defined Radio" and will see how it works out.

I only just received mine, I got so many questions from students on how to get it working with GNURadio. So far so good, although for HF the upconverter is the way to go. Make sure you go back to quad sampling if you have been in direct_q, otherwise you won't hear anything, maybe that is the issue. I did a few biathlons in Stoney Creek many moons ago!

Also you may want to reset the driver. SDR# has a .bat file to reload the driver (install-rtlsdr.bat).

@@ClarkTelecomYou've inspired me to look at it again. It originally stopped working on my bare boat necessities install on a raspberry pi 4 using ais-catcher. I've also tried it on a Windows and Mac computer with no success. Various SDR software. I'm thinking a hardware issue though.

Hola, espero pueda ayudarme utilizando el traductor. Tengo el rtl-sdr blog v4 y el SDR++ ademas del WSJT, sin embargo en este ultimo programa, en la seccion RADIO, no encuentro mi RTL-SDR v4. Esta parte no la entiendo, es necesario que aparezca seleccionada p puede dejarse en NONE? Estoy en MACOS asi que no se si requiero un CABLE AUDIO VIRTUAL como en Windows. Saludos desde Chile

@@ClarkTelecom hola, gracias por responder, tuve que utilizar un programa llamado BLACKHOLE para crear un “cable virtual” y que el WSJT escuchara el SDR++. Ahora, pues uso el dipolo con las antenas mas pequeñas (5-14 cms). Estoy esperando que llegue un YOULOOP chino y asi escuchar frecuencias en HF y SW. Mi pregunta es: que puedo hacer realmente con el programa? Que decodifica? Quizás sus aplicaciones son especificas y yo no entiendo que realmente hacer con el programa WSJT. Tiene algun video donde se explique TODO LO QUE SE PUEDE Y NO SE PUEDE HACER CON ESTE PROGRAMA? Saludos desde Chile

Hi Jeremy, Great channel you have. Did you ever look into YaND and YaDD? It is free software with a realy nive interface for decoding Navtex and DSC signals. YaDD can also CAT control Icom Transceiver/Receivers which makes it possible to scan multiple frequencies. Regards. Martin.

SDRangel allows to do the frequency upconversion/downconversion for you. Click on the "X" button in the in the "sample source" window (e.g. with your "RTL-SDR" sample source, the "X" button is located next to the dropdown currently having "Cen" selected as value). Clicking the "X" button opens the transverter mode dialog. Now you can provide the value of your up-/downconverter. For upconverters provide negative values, for downconverters provide positive values ... As the "nooelec Ham it Up" is a 125 upconverter, provide as value "-000,125,000,000 Hz", at make sure to activate the checkmark (must have orange background to be activated). Click OK. Having done so, the "X" button should now also have an orange background, indicating it is active. Now you can enter the original frequencies as the center frequency, and SDRangel will do the offset calculation automatically.

Nice video. Are you happy with the Tamaya's field of view? I have one that's a bit older. The telescope's FoV is about the same as a soda straw. It's the least enjoyable of all my sextants. I'm suprised that no flat earther has yet smeared himself across the comments section.

Thanks! I bought my sextant in Singapore in 1982, I have an emotional connection to it...long story. The telescope is ok like you say. I adapted a Plath bubble horizon via a 3d printer bracket, that telescope is very good. All the flat earthers have to do is receive GOES16 to change their mindset :).

@@Acid_Techno_Monk I looked at the balun and it looks great. It didn't exist when I shot this video. I just took the hook up wire and inserted it into the centre pin of the sma, or used a series of alligator clips and connected them to the whip, just laziness.

Hi Jeremy, I use a RasPi 4 (8GB) and OpenPlotter 3. For the AIS RTL-SDR-Dongle I build myself a Flowerpot Antenna with a choke coil at his base. I carefully trimmed the Antenna on 162 MHz with a small China SWR tool, and the RG58 cable to the antenna is no longer then 9 m. But I am not very happy about the poor range that it gives me back on AIS targets. Any suggestions for me?

To see what is possible, try SDRangel_ais on Win/Ubuntu. You can have a separate receiver for 87B/88B. That is the most sensitive I have found. I use a Tram VHF antenna, but yours seems well designed and fine. A VHF antenna high on a mast would give greater coverage.

I don't understand a thing about the particulars of GPS nor AIS but it amazes me how cool is that the Pi is able to run those cool I/O devices and show you the software signals on a portable "dock" for your Pi.Thumbs up.

Dear all, I am unable to get a GPS fix with RTKNAVI. I am using Win 10, the RTL SDR V3 dongle(RTL2832U R860 TCXO+BIAS T+HF), bias tee on, GPS antenna and RTKLIB 2.4.3. Is it working for anyone? Could you kindly tell me how you managed it? I am not the only one having problems. Thank you for your attention.

Can you tell what is the meaning of 'Sample data 100 times' in your code. Is it interpolation or decimation of samples 100 times.

If I don't sample by 10x or 100x the data goes into Scicos as vertical lines (1 sample) vs. a flat top data pulse....it is sort of an analog way to build the data.

If the sun is visible between the Tx to Rx path that means the ionospheric F layer is active which is good for long distance propagation.

Unfortunately I can receive no satellite .. sdrlib doesn’t display any satellite … even if I face clean sky … maybe it has to do with the location ?? I am in Europe

If you buy a rtl-sdr unit with two antenna in plugs, the second one capable of 100kHz to 30Mhz, you don't need any up-converter. In the settings for the hardware, you might eventually need to add "rtl=0,direct_samp=3" in the text field or device string (Gqrx). .... And with that you also don't need any extra USB power plug. Edit: In my case receiving W-Fax at 7.878 MHz.

The RTL's that go down to 100KHz sample at 28.8Msps, so if you don't mind aliasing about 14.4MHz then no problem.

Hello and thank you. This is the first video I have found testing a receieve antenna which is not part of a transmitter. The VNA is of course acting in place of a transmitter and sending it's signal out to the antenna and looking for load and any return signal. I have always wondered how much diference altering the coax length can make to the signal strength received. As with transmitters varying the coax length byhalf wave and quarter wave lengths is used to gret the best cable match. I would have liked to see more of the antenna construction and the coax connection there. Plus some close ups of the readings on your screens. Question how are you getting the display from the VNA onto the computer ? Thanks again good job.

I use NanoVNASharp V1.03 software which connects to the unit. The antenna is an RCA ANT751R.

I was just wondering if you ever had a problem when using FL-Digi.. (Shifting) the Weather Map as it Receives.. I am Experiencing a problem with the alignment that shifts the map with either SDR# (Very bad).. SDR++ (not as much or as bad) but still does it.. @@ClarkTelecom I don't hear you say what I was saying in the video but I do like the blog post! It is really nice. I just meant that you will never see the raw signal as it is below the noise floor by ~16 dB once you get to anywhere on earth you can receive it. No matter what gain you have on a single antenna, 1000 dBi etc.. you wont see it without processing or some kind (or a coherently summed antenna array). That is all I was trying to make clear. Keep up the good work though! Not trying to detract from all you did here, just a point worth making to those watching for a better understanding of signals and communications.

Hello Jeremy, young Amateur radio astronomer here I have a Jove radio telescope kit from nasa that has an SDRplay receiver i have used a Sawbird+H1 as an amplifier. There’s no real videos that show how to set up the software properly and I’m having trouble finding a better processor software that I can use with the spectrograph and SDRplay2rss. My main interest is to listen to what I’m receiving can you help me.

My general go-to SDR receiver software is SDR#. I believe you can use it with the SDRplay, although I haven't tried it. I only have RTL-SDR/HRF1/Pluto. I have a video/blog about using the Sawbird H1 as well. I heard about the Jove project a while ago, sounds very interesting. You receive wide band signals 8MHz around Fc=20MHz (HF). The Sawbird H1 works for the Hydrogen Line up at 1420MHz (uWave). Thank you for this video. I just joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary here in Texas. Working my way towards becoming a TCO. This is one area we seem to be lacking is the ability to track the boats in our inland waterways and lakes (non-navigable). While the VHF Marine Radios have MMSI and position reporting when connected to a GPS. The options to get that signal into something useful is very limited. Ultimately, I would like to see position reports similar to APRS in the ham radio ecosphere.

When I replay the captured signal it seems to play at a higher speed than it was recorded. A 15 second capture finishes playing in like 1 second. I had to add a throttle block to slow it down. Is that normal? This only happens when I use my hackrf. If I use my rtl-sdr then it plays back normally.

The files get big very fast, maybe you ran out of storage space after 1sec if you are using a large sample rate on the hrf1.

Good luck! If you are in an urban area it may be very difficult to get the signal because of EMI...good excuse to get into the country.@@MatthiasLenardt

How did you get your charts downloaded into OpenPlotter on the headless system ?

I keep all my charts on a usb drive that I can move from computer to computer as required. The charts were downloaded on my laptop from Cdn Gov.

Hi! I followed your tutorial here but when the GUI opens, it shows the signal centered at 0MHz. Is there anything I am missing?

On QT GUI SINK Properties, set Show RF Freq = Yes and when sim starts, bottom left "Display RF Freqs" tick yes.
