My puppy is almost 3 months old. He goes into the crate no problem. He will even play in there. I put his food bowl and he eats no problem. But the second I shut the door you’d swear something is killing him. I tried to leave him in the crate for 10 minutes and he just cries, scratches and tries to chew is way out. He’s panting so bad it’s a bit upsetting. I make sure he has gone potty so I’m at a loss. Any suggestions?
Cardi- I get her in 2 days! So excited! Been nesting for a month lol! She is mixed breed. Red Nose Pit, Boxer, Bullmastiff and American Pit! She is a copper color and white. Her little face is half copper and half white! Thanks for your videos!
Hi. Thank you for your video. My problem however is that he is happy to go in his crate but will only sleep on me. As soon as I transfer him he wakes and wines. He will not settle or go to sleep. How can I get him to sleep in his crate?
Introduce the crate as a positive space by placing treats and toys inside. Let your puppy explore it during the day. Feed meals inside the crate to create a positive association. For the first night, place the crate near you to comfort the puppy. Gradually increase the time the puppy spends in the crate, keeping it calm and rewarding.
It's normal for puppies to cry at first. Make sure the crate is a positive space with toys and treats. Try covering the crate with a blanket to make it cozier, and ensure the puppy has had enough exercise before crate time. Be patient and consistent; it takes time for them to adjust. And if it's really not working you can also use dog fences instead of a crate. Some puppies prefer that instead.
the point of putting puppy in a crate is to train it to poop and pee on the potty, giving it not so many space so he/ she will need to poop and pee in the spot that we wanted, until it's used too pooping and pee on that potty thing then we can let it go from the crate and just let it roam the house and make sure to place more than 1 potty if ur house is big enough
You are correct. Crate training definitely helps with potty training. It also has more advantages though such as preventing puppy biting, giving your puppy the rest it needs, etcetera.
In my book How to House-train a Puppy, I advise people to go out as earlier as eight weeks because it is essential to socialize your puppy. Insufficient socialization is even more dangerous than going out when not having all its vaccinations. Just try to avoid the big dog walking areas. Also, you can start with safe, controlled environments like playdates with vaccinated dogs or puppy classes that require all participants to be vaccinated. Do know doing this is at your own risk, of course. I'm just saying what lots of dog trainers told me.
Ok the whole leave the door open the first few days doesn't allow you to keep the puppy safe when you need to leave and take care of life for an hour or too. So that's not realistic
In my book "How to Prevent Puppy Separation Anxiety," I advise new puppy owners to take three weeks off work to care for their puppy, allowing the puppy time to adjust to its new environment. During this period, I recommend not leaving the puppy alone for an hour or two initially. Instead, gradually increase the time the puppy spends alone over these three weeks. This gradual approach helps the puppy become accustomed to being alone without experiencing sudden, prolonged periods of separation. This method can effectively prevent separation anxiety.
In my book "How to Crate-Train a Puppy," I explain that if your puppy falls asleep outside the crate, you can gently pick it up and place it back in the crate. Some puppies will continue sleeping comfortably inside the crate. However, if your puppy frequently leaves the crate to sleep elsewhere, observe whether it genuinely dislikes the crate. If your puppy is content being in the crate when you're taking a shower or doing other activities, then it's okay if it prefers to sleep on the floor. However, if your puppy becomes distressed when placed in the crate, consider using dog fences instead. Some puppies are more comfortable in a fenced area than in a crate.
This is a common issue many dog owners face. It sounds like your Akita might need more time outside or may not be fully emptying his bladder. Try extending the time spent outdoors and praise him when he successfully pees. It's important to monitor whether he actually pees during these outings. If he doesn't, he might relieve himself indoors upon returning. A helpful tip is to visit a specific, less stimulating potty spot outside consistently [find borings spots]. Repeatedly visiting the same spot helps him associate that area with going to the bathroom. Consistency and patience are key in reinforcing this behavior.
My baby is 3month n 2weeks beagle. Mom n dad r hunting beagles, but Tobey will just a loved family member….. No hunting in his future. I am disabled so I might get him super trained once he has the basics down. & YES he cries like I have left him Forever. Once I let him out, he’s Over the Moon EXCITED I’m back home and wants held!!!!!!! Help! Me here!
It's common for puppies, especially beagles with their strong bond instincts, to cry when left alone. To help Tobey, practice short, positive separations. Leave him with a toy or treat and calmly leave the room, returning after a 10-30 seconds without making a fuss. Gradually increase the time apart. Always reward calm behavior and avoid making a big deal when you return. This will help him feel more secure and reduce the crying over time. Also, in my book How to Prevent Puppy Separation Anxiety I list a detailed step-by-step approach on how to teach your puppy to be home alone.
Hello From Florida! I want to get your book. I have always had my dogs sleep with me but this baby at 4 pounds, I’m afraid I will hurt her or she will jump off my tall 4 Poster bed while I’m asleep 🥲
Hello there! It's a good idea to be cautious with a small puppy. You can use a cozy dog bed or a crate next to your bed for her to sleep safely. This way, she's close to you but safe from any accidents. As she gets bigger, you can consider letting her on the bed. Thanks for reading my book!
My twelve week old puppy sometimes humps my arm when playing and I was worried that might be a prelude to more dominant behaviour..? He's at an okay level with the biting except when he gets overstimulated, which I can't blame him for.
It's normal for puppies to hump as a form of play or excitement, not necessarily dominance. Redirect his behavior with a toy. For biting, continue to teach bite inhibition by stopping play when he bites too hard and offering a chew toy instead. Consistent redirection and calm responses will help him learn what's acceptable.
You're welcome! Yes, excitement from playing can trigger peeing. Try taking your puppy outside for a potty break after play sessions to help prevent accidents. Consistent potty breaks and positive reinforcement will make a big difference. Good luck!
You shouldn’t walk your puppy off the property until the 3rd round of vaccinations. I worked for my local vet. The amount of young puppies ( vaccinated ) that got parvo and died was so horrible. 😫

Crates can provide a safe and secure space for dogs, especially when owners can't supervise them. They're useful for potty training and preventing destructive behavior. It's also a personal choice; some dogs love their crates, while others are happier sleeping freely. The key is ensuring your dog feels comfortable and safe, whether in a crate or on the bed.
My puppy screams at me, doesnt bark or whine, SCEAMS. DEMANDS I follow him. He can be literally two feet away from me, if I talk to him to try to calm him he just gets more pissed and screams harder. Ive heard this kind of screaming when I had dinner with my aunt and she's basically controllled by her dog when she eats. He screams at her until she gives in and gives him some of her food. Homie has everything, toys, food, water, and yet he still screams at me. I live in a rural area and there's an animal I'm trying to get rid of because of the damage it caused so theres poisoned food around the property so rn he cant just roam unsupervised. That being said I keep him inside where he'd be safest and omfg he just wants me to sit on the bedroom floor with him.
I don't think I can really help with this through a comment alone, and I'm sorry about that. It sounds like a situation that might benefit from speaking with a professional dog trainer. They can give you the best advice on how to handle the issues you're facing with your dog.

My 4-1/2 month old German Shepherd/Australian Shepherd puppy is good in his crate. I trained him to go in by making it a pleasant place where he gets treats, has his meals, and he has a comfortable place to rest. I kept the door open for the first few days when he got here six weeks ago. It took some training of me getting further and further away until he would be quiet without constantly having to have me in his sight. He still gets upset when I go upstairs to the bathroom or to one of the rooms up there to get something. He sits there whining. This happens even when all his obvious needs have been met. He does not like to have me out of his sight. I never reward his whining with letting him out of his kennel or sweet-talking him. He gets no benefit from whining. However, when I leave him in the cab of my truck and go get groceries or go out to a friend's farm to do chores while they are away, he does not whine. I leave the window open so I can hear him. He looks at me through the window, and watches me. I come back to check on him and he's lying down quietly on the seat or chewing on one of his chew toys or a bone. Why can he not do this in the kennel, too? Can he learn? How do I teach him?
It sounds like your puppy is making good progress with crate training! You've done a great job creating a positive environment in the crate with treats and comfort, and it's good that you're not reinforcing the whining behavior. The difference in your puppy's behavior between being in the crate and in the truck might be due to the different environments and his perception of your departure. In the truck, he might feel more secure because he can see you through the window and knows you're nearby, even if you're out of sight for a bit. To help him feel more comfortable in the crate, try gradually increasing the distance and duration you're away while he's in there, similar to what you did before. You could also try giving him a special toy or treat that he only gets in the crate to make it an even more positive experience. Over time, he should learn that it's okay to be in the crate without seeing you and that you'll always come back. It's also possible that he just needs more time to adjust. Puppies often go through phases where they become more attached or anxious, and these phases usually pass with consistency and patience. Keep reinforcing the crate as a safe and positive space, and with time, he should become more comfortable being alone in it.
I got a 5 week old chocolate shih tzu for my 16th birthday 5 days ago. Her name is Mocha and I absolutely love her! So far my only issue is crate whining but that is to be expected. I’m so excited for the future with her and can’t wait for the next few weeks when she’ll start understanding some training. But I want to start her off right, I hope she’ll be a great dog 😊 thank you for your video!!
Mocha sounds adorable! At 5 weeks, she's still quite young and adjusting to her new surroundings. Typically, it's recommended for puppies to stay with their mother and littermates until at least 8 weeks of age to help them develop important social skills. I don't have experience raising a puppy from that young age, so I'm not sure what the best advice would be in this situation. I hope everything turns out well, and you both enjoy your journey together. Thanks for watching the video!
this video sucks, Likes to talk too much, and his hands Karate chop!!!?? What is that? Too much talking head! No wonder why he has almost no subscribers.
Hello, I’m in America and trying to figure out how to get my chihuahua puppy to walk with her harness and leash. Once on she refuses to move! I would love to walk her!
Hello, 7 week old lab mix. Instantly when going into the create it sounds like shes being tortured. It doesn’t help if Im next to her, or not. Hysterical crying and barking. Obviously i feel bad but I cant just stop my whole existence for some peace. What do I do?
This comment is a bit old, but for anyone else dealing with similar issues, it's important to know that most puppies usually get along fine with crates-some even love them! However, if your puppy is really upset, like the person mentioned, you might want to try a different approach. A dog playpen can be a good alternative. It gives your puppy more space and doesn't have a top, which might help them feel less confined. Just remember, playpens don't have the same potty training benefits as crates because they're bigger. Crates help puppies learn to hold their bladder since they don't want to mess up their sleeping area.
Thank you for this info… I and my husband have a 3 year old Boston Terrier named Freya Lord and we just got a puppy who was born with a bum front paw.. she is a Boston as well and we named her Ares Butler “the boneless” 😊 She is not quite 7 weeks old and she was given to us even though we had planned for her. It’s a bit of a story. Anyway, Freya is the love of my life, my❤ heart and it’s been hard on her because we didn’t know anything about the introduction process. Would love to talk more but am thankful for the info in your videos!
What schedule do you recommend for someone who works out of the home? I have someone to take her out at 9am and again at 12:15. No one will be home until 4:30. What would a schedule look like with this time frame for going outside to the bathroom
Hello we just got our first puppy whippet x lurcher on Saturday. He is now sleeping it his designated kind of like open puppy bedspace. I am so worried once we add the door to it (it has not arrived on time), and I am so worried our dog will be confused then. Also, could you please give me any advice on how do I leave him for work in this space?(not sure if raining pads would fit) He is now going to the garden-but what if no one is home? I am terrified. Please help us😢
Hi we have a 12 week only puppy who cries as soon as the door closes on the crate. She screams as if someone is choking her. I need help. We haven't slept in 3 weeks.
