The difference between Dumbledore’s final line and Hagrid’s line is hilarious. “You’ll find I’ve only left Hogwarts when none there are loyal to me.” Odd, but kind of a bad-ass and enigmatic line. Then “Follow the spiders if you wanna find out some stuff.” Completely random and insane line with no meaning 😂

That's a good point: Why wasn't Sirius brought up before? I find it hard to believe that once Harry got that album, he wasn't asking about everyone in those pictures. Sirius was someone his family *trusted*, but, as far as anyone is concerned, betrayed them. That's so more painful than Voldemort's coldness

Here's an interesting thought that occurred to me: For animagous, their animal form has distinctive markings from their human form. What are Peter's markings? Or the rest of the marauders, for that matter?

For the what if and the Elder Wand: Dumbledore would obviously know that Draco was now the master of the wand and would probably make some kind of plan to have Snape disarm Draco or something else to make sure Snape would become the master, as the original plan was. I don’t think Dumbledore would ever let Draco continue being the master of the wand because of the danger it would put both Draco and Dumbledore’s Big Plan in. The question is: would Dumbledore tell Snape about the wand? Or would he try to pull strings behind the scenes as always? How much does he actually trust Snape?

What always bothers me about this book is that Sirius and Remus are both fully trained wizards that definitely knew how to cast a stunning spell or full body bind, opt to bind Peter with ropes instead. It would have been fine if Peter was caught and escaped later. It makes no sense that Sirius had to go back on the run after this night if they had just used common sense.

Hermione's schedule doesn't make sense if few students are taking Arithmancy. If so and they're taking Transfiguration too. If only a few take Arithmancy, then if there's a conflict, teachers are often amenable to accommodating students with finals. (And at my University of Louisville, a number of professors were quite willing to make finals on the last day, especially in Spring semester due to Finals falling on Derby Festival Week. Since my graduation, though, the spring semester was adjusted to end finals before the First Saturday in May, the day of the Kentucky Derby. In fact, I think it ends the week before, now. (not to mention the teachers often take off the day prior to the Derby, when the Kentucky Oaks stakes are running-often called the Kentucky Derby for fillies.)

Re: graduate school entrance exams are called GRE: Graduate Record Exam. It consists of two parts: verbal and mathematics/science. Many people excell in one or the other part. I found this out when my older sister (in the School of Education) exclaimed incredulously about my scores, "Nobody gets good grades in both sections!"

Late as always, but I think I know whats going on with the Honeydukes passage. Hogwarts, as established, is a medieval castle somewhere in probably Scotland. It was not uncommon at the time for castles to act as village fortifications as well as just a large home for the local noble, so in order to protect the villagers there would have needed to be ways for people to escape in and out in times of crisis that would not be evident to the enemy, especially during (fairly common) sieges. The Honeydukes passage is almost certainly one of those. It also would have acted as a way to ferry supplies in and out of the grounds. More than likely, it fell into disuse after the age ended since things would have just been safer; its far easier to drive a carriage up to the castle than ferry boxes of supplies on foot. Ordinarily they would collapse, but its likely there's some kind of impervious charm or some other similar thing to keep the passage from dilapidation. The docks would have filled a similar role, though I suspect those were mostly for shipments and not actually security. The Whomping Willow passage may also be one of these, or a newer construction since it sounds like the shack and the tree were added at the same time, but I might just be confusing things. If you want a really cool instance of castles being used like this in real life, you should go read about Black Agnus, who held off the British for months using passageways, good resource management, and psychological warfare.

Thoughts while listening... I always thought it would have made sense for Ron's study of hippogriff law to have led to Ron becoming a wizard lawyer. With Draco, I don't think he was happy about Buckbeak dying, so much as he was happy about Hagrid being hurt. Still evil, but not so much about Buckbeak. Also, with the invisibility cloak, while it's past their actual exams for it, I'm surprised Hermione didn't use the cloak and the Time Turner to go back and secretly watch the lesson on cheering charms just so she at least got the lesson. Even if the exams are only one specific spell, I'm guessing the students don't know which spell they're going to have to do. And it may even change from year to year. For example, maybe that Year's third years had to do a cheering charm for their charms final, but the year before had to do a depressing charm, and the year before that had to do a luck charm of some sort. In that case, the students would basically have to go in knowing their entire curriculum for the year, but tested on only one thing. If it was the one thing they knew, they come out great. If it's the one thing they didn't learn that year, uh-oh… Ask bravadi and the other girl, I think they get high marks in Trelawny's class because they buy into everything she says. If Trelawnyis a fraud, then like most frauds, she's going to prefer people to fall for her scams. Lupin fighting is a werewolf during the Battle of Hogwarts would not have worked with the way werewolves exist in the Harry Potter universe. Had he done so, even if he defeated Greyback, his instincts as a transformed werewolf would have had him attacking pretty much anyone on the battlefield including students, and maybe even his own wife. The thing that seems weird to me about the execution is that they use an ax. It really seems like avada kedavra, The killing curse, would be a far more Swift and humane way of execution when necessary. As far as the ministry doing the execution at sunset, it's probably either so none of the students can watch since they should be in bed or at least in their dorms at that point, as well as probably some superstitious or magical aspect of not killing something during the day. As for McGonagall and Sirius having clothes vs Pettigrew losing them... I address this in my own writing, which involves various therianthropes, primarily werewolves (though two of my main characters encounter a taruinthrope, aka werebull in the second book). Basically, shifting with their clothes is a skill they refer to as "pulling clothes". It's a skill that takes years to master, so young children and the recently marked can't do it yet. It's one of multiple reasons a lot of them tend to run around naked in their villages. No, Luna is not right there. She hasn't been introduced at this point in the books. As far as fixing the teacups and pitchers, I think with reparo, the person using the spell probably has to know what they're repairing and how they're repairing it. Thus, a simple crack in Harry's glasses or something that's only broken in two or three pieces would be so easy that a talented and studious witch on the way to her first year could manage it. For something that's shattered though, they probably have to envision in their minds every single little sliver of glass and how it goes back together with everything else all at once while past in the spell. Thus, things like Hagrid's pitcher are unrepairable by it.

I think Ginny destroys the diary in the bathroom because she was about to do something under Riddle’s influence or had just done something under Riddle’s influence. So she was leaving the chamber or entering the chamber to do something. And while possessed, she mustered enough strength to part with it

I've always taken it as they snap your wand if you're expelled only before taking your OWLs because that means you will never be a fully trained wizard and so are considered dangerous with a wand. I don't know how they'd prevent an obscurus situation then though if the person couldn't do wandless magic.

No, this is a bootstrap paradox too. Harry casts a potronus because he knows he can do it, but he known he can do it because he did it. So where did the information come from? Since whithout it he wouldn't have been able to give himself said information due to being unable to cast it. If causality is ignored, it's usually a bootstrap paradox.

If the games are anything to go by, I think the difference between scores after each match contributes to your overall league score. Like, if Griffindor beats Slytherin 170-60, they score 90 points for their progress for the Cup. So the goal would be to win by a larger margin.

I'm gonna drop this again I've been saying it for years, but Dumbledore has a time turner. His super fancy watch, introduced to us, in the first chapter of Philosopher's Stone. I say that he has indeed been behind the plot and orchestrating events, giving council to himself. The loop has a start end point just before he touches the ring.

Voldemort was angry with Quirriel for not being able to rob the bank, that he had to orcuppie him, to instruct what to do. And Quirriel is so selfabsorbt in that Voldemort chooses him to be so close. So he doesn't get what really goes on. Dumbledore is good at reading minds, at quesswork, but is not all-knowing all the time, but he is as fast as Harry to connect the dots. He plays chess with McConnegal so is used to seeing things from all possible angles. And he is studying all the time what goes on. Some of the errors from writers side it is book 1 and maybe it does not get as popular as it is for so long a time. And still it is also 11 years old children they start to be able to think abstract in this age, maybe wizards and whitces litte more progressed. Thanks for such hillarious read through. I likes it very much

I'm loving the podcast!! I think you need to know something about dating in Britain before you read the next book. We have a different dating etiquette in Britain than you do in America, and frankly, I prefer yours! In Britain you don't really do casual dating. If you're on a date with someone then you're both seriously considering a relationship together. You only really get 2-3 dates before you have to decide if you're in a relationship or not. So, going to the yule ball with someone, even though it's something you're supposed to bring a date to is basically date no.1, hence the high number of couples that continue after the yule ball. This ups the stakes for asking anything of someone you could be in a relationship with, hence the extra fuss around having to ask someone to the ball, the pressure Harry feels when he's out with Cho etc. It makes it a high pressure situation.

I feel when it comes to ‘What If’ scenarios and prophecies is that until the prophecy is said it’s not set in stone. So until Trelawney makes the prophecy about Peter returning to Voldemort it’s fair game weather he’s caught or killed but once it’s said he’ll return fate is set and nothing can change it
