@@randyrisch188 is the 20 inch bell one of the Kanstul made ones? I think they were building them for a while. Have you played the 24j or 20j. I didn't even realize the 26/27 existed with the short action valves but with forward action. I don't know that I really care. I think one advantage with the upright action is that the valve stems are buried in the tubing so a knock won't bend a valve stem. Although I think the only front action horn I ever had that had a problem like that was the chinese miraphone copy I reviewed years ago. It was a nice playing horn after the linkage was converted to R/C car tie rods. I sold the horn when I was playing all foxtrot/polka jobs and really didn't need the horn and it was an upright. Having both bells I think really enhances the instrument's flexibility. I played a Wessex XL which is sort of like the miraphones that had interchangeable bells, however, the miraphones I played worked well. The XL I tried was not good. I played it for a few minutes and was done with it. I played the 25J last night with a friend on accordion and it just plays really well and fits me. Another question - do you have the correct bit that these things were supposed to use? I think its a short straight bit. Everyone has an opinion, but in this vintage ad it looks like there is a short bit on the horn. Panasonic AG-HMC40P Camcorder using a Rhode SVM hot shoe mounted microphone. About 2018-2019 I went to the DVX 200 with modified Oktava 012 condensers on many recordings for size and sound quality (after mods). A few videos I used my CAD E100s which I would set up on mike stands. I added the external XLR mike adapter to the camera and used it for mikes as well as from mixing boards. @@PiotrBarcz i would look at the higher end canon 4k consumer cameras. As long as it has the red 1/8" stereo jack you will be able to put sound in the the camera. The DVX200 is dated but if you look at my slingers or all the community band stuff it in action in various light levels. My latest tuba demo was done with the oktavas/dvx 200. it does a better job that what can be uploaded to youtube so good enough. I shoot various pro jobs with the dvx and a few have been contest winners so its not just the camera but the knowledge of post processing to make things sound right and look right. There are some vids that I mixed years ago before I had studio monitors on my computer and the sound is embarrassing because the high end computer speakers were not flat in their response between low and high volume. I bought used mackie 624s and then the audio content improved. In various mixing situations you can get all kinds of odd sound artifacts like comb filters due to resonances. In the older pocket sandwich theatre I had only one spot for the camera up in the corner surrounded by 3 sides of wooden paneling. In that case I finally defeated that effect by creating mike mounts out of pvc pipe filled with acoustic batting eliminating all sound reflections. It took a while to figure that out. The mikes rest in the batting eliminating any sound from the wooden flooring from people walking around as well. I could mix on headphones but that's a different sound entirely. I have used a number of audio filters unheard of when I started. Taking a noise print for an inversion layer drops SN ratio about 15 db. And I have used tools like audio spectral layers to correct distortion from wagnerian sopranos or to eliminate other sound artifacts that are not part of the performance. Each of these tools allows for an inversion of a given sound and does not affect the quality of the performance. I never edit competition vids other than for brightness and maybe color induced overtones. It the 2023 meyerson with the community band I didn't use a deep enough neutral density filter and people were washed out from the spotlights. Goes on and on. I hope that information helps you with your video productions.

@@steamboat75043 Yeah I have a Canon XA-10 which is a 2000 dollar camcorder from 2010 but has video quality that beats most modern cameras these days. It has dual XLR inputs too so I can plug in my Behringer C2 pencil condensers straight into it. It also has the 8th inch line input so I can take direct (but very noisy) input from keyboards and other stuff. I just like the old look of video from the cameras that have the slightly sepia washed colors and the slight haloing. You can't get the same effect in post, that's for sure. 4K is overkill for me for the most part, file sizes are too big, I don't have a 4K monitor etc. xD

@@PiotrBarcz canon xa-10 will always be good. if it looked good then it will look good now. And if you are going to do 4k video you need a powerful computer with a lot of memory and drive space. I look at it in terms of archival of what I was doing and my legacy. But I am much closer to the end of my rope than you are. Cell phones do a decent job and eliminated just about everything but pro-sumer cameras. I did HD on an i5 machine for years, but with the DVX I went to a threadripper 2017 top of the line processor and spent big time for it. You can get a standard cheapo 4k tv at walmart and use it as a 4k monitor. I spent a lot on the one I am using but now they are kind of cheap (and disposable) and get as big as your desk will hold. I am overdue for a computer upgrade but loathe windows 11. I was in the software trade for decades and I just see change for change's sake. Plus on my old stuff I don't have to create an email account which I will never use (and normally has an obscenity in it). I have used kodak zi8 hd cameras for stuff and with a mike input jack - not bad results either for their era. I used them as inset cameras for a fellow organist. This is the Arnstein Organ Company (me) Opus 7. When I give out the transcriptions I have asked for a video as compensation for my work. I have never had that happen. The premier performance was at Highland Park United Methodist church in Dallas in a recital given by my late friend Robert MacDonald. Robert played Radio City Music hall as well as Riverside church before coming to Texas. He retired in the Boston area near family. There is a live recording of Thomas Murray on this link and when someone pointed it I contacted Mr. Murray and he confirmed it was my arrangement. The link is in the notes to hear a live recording. I remember when I gave it to Robert that he looked at the pedal / tympani solo in the end of the chart and assumed that it was written by a 'band person' who wasn't familiar with the organ. I got on the bench and demonstrated how I did it. His response was 'oh'. Then he took it on and did the premier. I have been thinking about old friends who are gone now today Ifunny you should mention it) and am planning to go to an accordion meeting and play 'Deep River' one of my favorite spirituals for them. I hope I can do it as I am rusty and will be somewhat emotional. It would be nice to hear it performed lived again - that was probably 20 years ago.

all the equipment is in frisco. Not sure if they bought the columbia 40 hp boiler gifted to the museum many years ago which I helped maintain. But the whistles are there and build out is a big priority as well as the PA project. Get gas/water out to the site and another boiler (I was sparing out flues to keep it going - getting near the 10% limit on an aging boiler) then the whistles could sound again. You can contact the museum and see what the plan is to have a boiler shed and do the work involved. The calliope (also in my videos which I played at the state fair for years) is stored at the museum in frisco. If they get a boiler going again I can start playing again, if, you like shrieking versions of songs your barely recognize... 😝😝

why not? plenty of orchestras play pops. the key is to hear the horn. you can follow the link to hear it in a band setting. i have literally played every style of music on the tuba. polka, wind ensemble, orchestra, fox trot.... i talk about my demo philosophy in the demo. can the horn play loud/soft/in tune,etc. generally BBb would be brighter in sound. this sort of a BBb iteration of a CC horn. however you can effect a lot of change with mouthpiece selection. so....? can you change tone color just by playing? what does the music call for? i suppose i could have played an etude...but what makes a song what? These songs do not need ensemble context to be relatable.

The ETACs of this era all have the A/C compressor switch relay roasted out. I made the video specifically because I bought ETACs off ebay and proved they didn't work and sent them back to the buyers for a refund. Then I went and got the Nikko relay as noted, soldered that into the board, and that fixed it. The ETAC relay is bad. When people say an ETAC was tested, well, how much were they tested? Did the ETAC turn on the blower fan? Did they have a good read out? If they came used from a boneyard the testing might not include shoving the unit into a good running lincoln which passes all the other voltage tests but doesn't switch on the A/C clutch wire because the system is depressurized or the engine is not running. So the thing we care about, that relay, is untested. Electronic repair of the original ETAC PC board by replacing the original Nikko relay and returning the duds is the repair. Worst comes to worst, you put a relay triggered off ignition and feed power to the a/c clutch and run the a/c compressor all the time. Or a hand switch and remember to shut the thing off. I have even just jumpered the wire when I had a music tux job and didn't want to show up to a job smelling like a goat. 😜 Just be careful with the case and covers as the plastic will be brittle after these many years of of heat cycles. (and thanks for subscribing) One thing I do show is that I test the replacement relay before I solder it on to the PC board. No reason to put a dud relay on and go through all those steps again. I always test electrical parts before I install them. I have an audi F212 roof position relay sensor video in the works. Best of luck. I know you can do this repair.

exactly. joy brought to a performance is immeasurable. I get annoyed with the competition model because playing every note right is more important than expression. I would rather hear a few wrong notes with great passion than a mechanical 'perfect' performance with strict time. Horowitz said you play mozart like chopin and chopin like mozart.

Mr. Fox wasn't at his best at this stage, but like Horowitz who didn't play without mistakes, I think there is room for multiple interpretations and I enjoyed both versions. I like the energy personality and joy that Fox put into this. Thanks for sharing the link. But I just listen to performances for their enjoyment and unless the interpretation or performance problems really get in the way of my enjoyment, then I am fine with what the artist is doing. I can look at many of my own performances, especially as I age, and still enjoy what an older artist shares even if it is not technically pure or pushes the boundaries a bit. Considering the attention Mr. Fox (and Mr. Biggs) brought to the organ during the 70s how many more at least know of the tune now. Here is another version. For this reason, the console (which DID have an AGO pedalboard available, BTW) was not built in any "standard" layout as such--certainly not according to AGO standards! As a result,Virgil demanded several changes to the console under threat of cancelling the concerts he was scheduled to perform. A local technician almost went bonkers in his efforts to comply with those demands. Thankfully, he succeeded, and, as we can see in these videos, the concerts were a huge success. Whether or not those changes to the console were reversed after Virgil left, I don't know. Since then, however, a number of much more modern instruments, both pipe and electronic, have been installed in various locations throughout Japan, including (ironically!) the touring version of the Rodgers Royal Five organ which he had designed for Carnegie Hall, as well as a VERY large romantic-style organ in the CUBE Concert Hall in Shiroishi, Japan." So it is a new style electronic console on a pipe organ. Pipe organs can be screechy too. There are other videos from this concert. I just chose this one to improve the sound. Even to this day Mr. Fox invokes controversy. I like his playing, and I like a lot of other performers too. I'll never to close to that level of performance, but I still enjoy playing. At one time I looked down at people with lowery electronics doing 2 finger playing, but then I thought, if they enjoyed playing music as much as I do and the instrument helps them and improves their enjoyment, then ever nickel was well spent. The gig fugue is 'joy'. As I age, I think about what music means to me - joy.

No. 7 worked there for decades and was retired in the 1960s and steamed its way into the Age of Steam Railroad Museum located at Fair Park Dallas as its last run. and yet he brought the organ and bach to the attention of 100,000s of people through his 'happenings' and other venues. I doubt any organist to date was as well known. When I was collecting records, his along with E Power Biggs were the ones that were most available. But how about posting a reply with a link to your version so we can see how its played. Like Horowitz, their strength of character in their interpretations and performance still holds them up in many eyes (and ears) despite worrying about perfectionism. I would also direct you to find recordings of his from his earlier years, not when he was old and sick then be a judge. But as for this performance, if you don't like his performance, then why not just go listen to others you like better. The modern equivalent would be Cameron Carpenter who I also greatly enjoy listening to. Mr. Carpenter also is pushing the boundaries. With youtube and so many performers and recordings I would ask, is there not room for something different? I have my own absurd interpretations of various songs with Anton Mordasov on my channel (search 'irwin anton' on my page) we have fun with the music and bring joy to it, which brings joy to the listeners. We experimented with Rubenstein's Melody in F and a good chart can be played many different ways and still be enjoyable.

please give us a version of this piece that you like so that we can compare. Mr. Fox was criticized for being to 'swinging' in his interpretations and not 'baroque' enough for the purists in his day. I nearly caught his last performance, but unfortunately it was the night before and he was too sick to perform the night I went. Especially when he repeats his 'bouncy' rhythm of the theme when he plays it as a sort of small encore. Mr Fox last performed in 1977. Perhaps looking at the performance in context of how bach was played at the time might modify your opinion. But again, please post a link to a performance you like, or even better, a performance of yours that illustrates your point. We also have to think about the instrument and how it responds and how the hall responds as well.

And choke (or as the brits called it 'strangler') for the 6 cylinder engine in a 59 chevy 1 ton I did up, as well as a 47 jeep I rebuilt. I don't really say restored, because I improved them or did them up as I wanted. For example the jeep got zebra stripes After driving it around for a while I sold it on ebay and it went to germany. I figured they wanted to reverse engineer it to figure out how they lost the big one in in 1945... :P :P :P :P :P The problem was it had 9" drums. Barely adequate for its time. With the 59 1 ton I managed to find kevlar lined front brake shoes and they worked almost as good as disk brakes, other than, you had to regularly adjust them. No automatic adjusting brakes for that vehicle. But it also had grease zerks for everything so nothing wore out if you took care of it. That's one of the things I really dislike about modern 'sealed' stuff. So I use a grease needle and go into the boot and fill it up. Then the grease eventually heats up and the boot helps squoze the goo where it needs to go. When I replace that stuff I always try to find stuff with grease fittings. And exterior mirrors were controlled by cables. And the 59 1 ton had floor vents with their own pulls/cables independent of what little heating system it had. (no A/C)

He was remarkable, he brought a theatricality and flash to the organ like no one had before. I worked for his agent and got to speak with him from time to time. He was, as we say in the south, a real hoot.
