As always, great advice! One elaboration and one additional tip based on my experience. When riding into the headwind, open vest/jacket/jersey and sit up (non-aero, I know) to create drag. Also, measure and log where you can see your altitude gains, grade percentages accomplished, etc. to select training routes and to be encouraged by your progress. Thanks! KB

As a heavier cyclist (approx 95kg), climbing is a challenge. However, I have found that finding my climbing tempo and sticking to that tempo on every climb, does help. I don’t look to break any records or get a KoM, I just tap out my tempo and get to the top of the hill that I’m climbing, and this leaves me with enough energy to finish the rest of my ride.
@Forest_velo

One tip is to go to the gym and build up the quads doing squat lifts with massive weights. After 1 year of that, the muscles will have great strength for the climb. Maybe that wouldn't address the burnout though.

My top tip for climbing - start a climb at an intensity you can finish at … ideally, increase the effort as you get to the top - you’ll feel like a hero and the fear of climbs (sometimes the biggest battle) will fade away

Great stuff as usual. I have been relatively undisciplined in my outdoor riding. In the winter months, I had a good routine of workouts going on Zwift. Once the weather turned nice, I shifted to all outdoor riding. And once outdoors, I let the terrain control the workout. On a flat route (which I need to travel to), I will generally go for a Zone 2 long ride, or a Zone 3 shorter ride. On a hilly route (which is required if I ride out my front door), I let the hills dictate the power required. And since I'm relatively new to this, my primary goal has been to make it up the hills without stopping - which was a major barrier in the Spring. I think I've also fallen into the trap of doing more miles instead of more productive focused training rides. I probably need to shorten some of my rides and increase the intensity riding either threshold or VO2 Max intervals. -Todd

Yes, I am a 65 year old rider and everything you explained with these 3 tips is spot on. By the way, do you have lights on your bike on these narrow roads? I would suggest wearing bright fluorecent jerseys to improve visibility for car drivers. I experienced very positive effects here in the Netherlands as drivers show more attention, slow down sooner, and keep more distance.
@Forest_velo

Yes I have a rear light on most rides. Generally I’m riding on pretty quiet roads but appreciate your thoughts on high visibility!

I have found doing just 10 min routines when too busy ,low mood and counting them as a complete workout an excellent way to maintain consistency and fitness . It keeps the habit going which is hugely important . Being older I appreciate any exercise even if only light session is still excellent . I use a monthly wall calender as an accountability and motivation tool aswell which also helps, been doing that for 4 yrs now inputing all exercise and bodyweight , BP, hr I started using indoor cycle trainer more in recent years and just getting a 25min min HIIT or interval session is excellent at maintaining things 🙂 currently since june my fitness has slumped and I have put on weight 6kilos this year 😅 but I am still exercising every week , strength mostly so the habit is still going stong i just need to ride my bike more and get my mojo back😅

Hard to avoid it. Much is in the culture of the country you cycle in and even the area of the country. As you say, be courteous but also use the road wisely. I ride in groups on busy roads and when we do that, take the lane on busy roads as long as they are multiple lanes. When traffic banks up, stop and let them pass otherwise risks will be taken and that’s it safe for anyone. Always stop at lights and stop signs and try not to move in front of cars when stopped at busy intersections. I make a point of thanking motorists for being courteous with the hope that helps another cyclists. That being said, too many cyclists break the rules and create unsafe situations.

I found that riding early in the morning solves most of the problems. A bit more dogs out there, but what can you do... Streets are just empty. Otherwise, you run into all sorts of people, my favorite was a delivery guy yelling after me: bikes are ridden on the sidewalk! It's not legaaaaal, I yelled back. I don't know if he heard me, probably not. Bike bath separated both from motor vehicles and pedestrians is rare around here, and paths' quality is a disaster. No one really maintains them. Unless you have 40c+ tires, you are safer using the asphalt rode, motor traffic is much more predictable than pedestrians that run into your bike path. There are some bike lanes on the road (just painted line), usually on the recently reconstructed streets, but often there are parked cars, delivery vehicles etc. Additional problem is that some drivers think that since you are in a bike lane, it is OK to drive just right next to it, I too often feel their rear view mirror whooshing past me.

I did a lot of reading on improving sleep quality some10yrs ago when I was a fresh parent and baby wrecked my sleep schedule, so I was trying to get back on track after she grew up a bit and stopped waking up during the night 1. Same bedtime and wake up time every day,even on weekends 2. Darkened bedroom 3. Bedroom should be, if possible, bedroom only 4. Before going to bed, same ritual starting at the same time 5. No screens in bed. No watching tv in bed. No books in bed 6. Practice. You train your sleep like any other physical activity

Sleep - I’d like to do more of it. My go to prerequisites with a 9:30 pm bed time are: 1. Good environment; 2. no coffee or other stimulants past 2pm; 3. No eating after 7:30 pm; 4. No work after 5 pm and no email browsing especially; 6. Shower before bedtime to relax. I don’t mind a bit of background music or non work podcast to send me off to sleep.

These magic formulas tell you the best things in them, but I worry about the things they don’t tell you about / is listed as ingredient I have no idea about - the older I get,the more I stick to real natural foods they can’t be tampered with …. Not working to blow out of proportion, but the ever increasing cancer rates are coming from something we are doing …
@82vitt
@82vitt 26 дней назад
Increasing cancer rates are coming from more people in developed countries reaching very old age due to developments in medicine and medication. Cancerous cells develop in our bodies all the time throughout our lives, but our immune systems take care of them in most circumstances, but at a very old age this process is greatly compromised. However, the number one death cause in the developed world is cardiovascular diseases resulting from obesity from overeating on highly palatable, ultra-processed junk food which people have no problem with and enjoy gorging on and shockingly little physical activity, while blaming everything on corporate/government conspiracies to poison food and cause cancer. Btw, almost no modern "natural" food, such as fruits, vegetables and grains, isn't a product of genetical modification at some point.
