Looks a great place for extensive rail travel with something like interrail. You could work with two passes simultaneously - Portugal and Spain, because all interrail passes allow "off" days. That's unless you want a Continuous Pass, but my personal experience is - if you're going to have a Continuous Pass, then might as well be Global, which means you can start right away at Calais, and from there of-course you can go anywhere. The only matter then is the number of nights accomodation - your interail ticket price being the LEAST of your concern.!
While I take the valid point that this is not how a modern European country wants to portray itself, I think the need to draw in tourists and preserve heritage is equally valid in this case. Think of the Looe Valley Line, the St Ives Lines, the West Highland Line. These function both as a means of transport and as a tourist attraction. When I travelled down the line from Régua to São Bento last month the train was full of foreign (French, British, German, American) tourists as well as local people. One thing that really impressed was that when the line speed permitted, the loco was allowed to go flat out. No trundling heritage service, but a proper, modern means of transport.
Where are the people? Empty trains; Empty stations; Empty regions. Poor line; Medieval trains; Poor people; Zero investment during more than 100 years...

No resto, que seria o mais importante num País a sério, veríamos: - comboios modernos; - vias duplas; - comboios elétricos; - velocidades médias bem superiores a estas velocidades medievais; e, sobretudo: GENTE; GENTE; GENTE. Os turistas adoram estes comboios com as grandes janelas de abertura e a corrida ao longo do belo Douro, não querem comboios modernos e corridas de alta velocidade, querem apreciar a paisagem e os comboios estão sempre cheios no verão.
@@stevejones8881 Claro! É este o problema geral de Portugal: Temos de ser bonzinhos, amáveis, e bonitinhos para os turistas. Para o portuguesinhos qualquer coisa basta... manda-se as pessoas emigrar... Com esta mentalidade, muito comum tb nos políticos, nunca iremos longe...
@@CarlosPT-hb6zb Se essa é a sua opinião, então é triste como os turistas trazem muito dinheiro para a economia, sem os turistas os trens estariam vazios, então você não teria qualquer investimento na linha para novos trens ou infraestrutura
