Hi, this is me doing what I like and what I find interesting. I am not a mechanic and do not work on cars everyday for a living. I hate to spend large amounts of money to have work on things and have someone do a sub par job and still want to charge me top dollar. I also see people selling tools for large sums of money that I look for alternatives such as the smoke machine I built and the pressure transducer. I am open to ideas and if you are in the San Diego area, and have a difficult problem with your car, hit me up.
Do you happend to have the part number to the selenoid kit you used mine just started doing that and gave me a code p0778 i would like to change all the selenoids thanks
Oh man! This is the best video ever I have seen since the ac in my car stopped. I am going to check the magnate hopefully it’s the reason why it is not working. Thanks a lot
Great video, I don't have any reservations on working on my transmission now at all. My third gear misses sometimes. I have a question that I don't seem to be able to find an answer on "How much Fluid does this transmission hold? I got mine used from a salvage yard, it was drained completely. I put 4-1/2 quarts in, that was the only amount I saw in my searches, I don't want to over fill it.
Gearbox oil (ATF) temperature sender G93 It is located inside the gearbox housing. It continuously monitors the temperature of the ATF oil and sends a temperature signal to the gearbox control unit. I have read people buy a new sensor and wire it into the harness near the solenoids. Unless you plan to open the trans case?
Thanks for the video man. bought a 05 tdi wagon having issues shifting when it was cold. Watched your video and swapped the solenoids and she's shifting buttery smooth now, thanks again!
Hi John, This is very well put together video. Really appreciate your time on this. I have two mk4 jettas and i did this solenoid change on one of them, the car shifts fantastic. But the other car acting up and im in process of doing the same, but probably made a mistake while taking the multifunction switch, while loosening the middle bolt the car went back a bit, stupid me tried again went back bit more. Then I took the link off. The question is Im Paranoid now. Is there anything i must do to reset it?

I posted it a long time ago in the replies. I believe the place was in Florida. Do not get the Ebay ones. Worked only for about 4 months. I believe it is cobratransmission.com
great video however here or some helpful tips which will make the job easier. disconnect PS hose at PS pump, remove 10M bolt from bracket top of trans and you can move PS hose under car out of your way remove bracket from sump pan, 3 10M nuts. disconnect top rad hose and move out of way. remove rad fan assembly (3 Philip head screws)
I added comments about removing the screw in the upper drivers side wheel well and pulling the power steering hose under the transmission. Gives a lot of room to complete the task.
What did u have to remove to get to the solenoids? I followed ur vid and idk if I hooked everything back up right cuz now I have a glow plug issue and the car won't even turn over, plz help!
There were two connectors above the transmission pan you removed. One is for the transmission, I believe to determine the gear selector. Glow plug I do not know, however older VW the insulation liked to crack on the wires you move. The glow plug wires are in the big harness (like 11i4 " diameter) running alongside the transmission.
2005 vw golf with this same transmission, does not upshift 3,4,5 unless you let up on the gas pedal. Trans has 188k miles and oil has never been changed, just did first drain and fill, and oil was brown, is there a chance this could be solenoid issues?
I think there is. I would drive around a few miles and drain and fill again. If I remember, only a little over 3 liters per drain and fill. I remember the first time I did mine, it was following a shift that hit like a hammer as I was speeding up to go through a traffic light. It took three drains and fills for mine to smooth out. The main reason I went with the Valvoline ATF. The VW at 18-20 dollars a liter would have been horribly expensive.
Omg thank you! You saved me so much money. Went to scrap yard and tested for ohms. Found one that was good and pulled the electromagnet off and swapped it out. 20$ fix and about an hour's worth of time. Haven't had a/c for 5 years. It feels so good
Thank you. Now it is my turn to try fix 2001 jetta golf compressor and no power coming to compressor. I don't know where the power coming from the next to the compressor. Is it called air conditioning control module??? I need some help for sure. I don't want to pay almost $2000. If I could do it, probably I can do it under $300. Thank you again for the good job you showed us.
I used Valvoline MaxLife multivehicle. I use the fluid in most every car now and have no problems. I see in the VW forums, many others use the same fluid.
Hello. Nice video. I got a europ jetta (named bora here) of 2002 1.8t with te 5 speed tiptronic. Vcds tell me its solanoid valve 10. Shuld i replace only this one or better replace them all. I suddenly got bad shifting up and down in evry gear.
Not sure what valve 10 would be. I have included some recommended Ohm readings you should get measuring resistance at the TCM. Ohms checks are not conclusive unless they check bad. Solenoids can fail underuse, going open, or shorting. when hot. If you are going to remove the cover and replace one solenoid, yes, I would recommend changing them all. In the USA, the cost is about $300 to $350 for a set of all solenoids. I would avoid the cheap ones from eBay.
@@John76546-x thanks for reply! Vcds say the problem is solenoid, wiring or tcm problem. Most likely i think would be the solenoid. I could masure resistens but is there a diagram to know where i must masure? Hope i can find the solenoids here in Belgium. On local websites i cant find them. Hopfuly the local dealer can have them.
Thank you for the video I have two question first one is where I can buy all the solenoid and the second question is where is the transmission filter located thank you for your help I appreciate
There is no accessible filter in the 09A transmission unless you remove and split the case. You are pretty much with spill and fill. If you do consecutive with few miles driving between, you will refresh the fluid. I believe Cobra Transmission from Florida is who I purchased the solenoids from. I once bought much cheaper ones on Ebay, recommend not to do this mistake. They did not last very long. Remove small screw new driver wheel well on power steering and put hose under trans, will give you a lot of room to do this repair without putting car into service position.
my car was stuck in first gear. i did what you did. you just saved me $5000 at the garage or my 03 jetta ending up in the junkyard. thanks for sharing this
have the same problem even after putting in a brand new compressor. brought to a mechanic and they want 1700$ cuz they say the brand new compressor is bad, can anyone pls help me find a cheaper solution. i live in arizona and need ac in my car lol
Think this coil replacement could have been done without un-mounting the compressor? Is there enough space to pull the clutch and pulley off with the compressor still attached?
So I was just looking into this myself. There is a sticker on the compressor If it says sd7v16 I think it’s this www.amazon.com/dp/B071GQ7FLL?psc=1&smid=A1DNWVGXLP0ZLY&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp This is what I ordered to repair my ac. I was told it was a bad compressor. 1k to fix. I’ll just go ahead and try this repair before looking into a compressor
Im praying you reply 🙏. So I just changed all the solenoids got it all back together. I put 3.5 quarts of atf I got my reverse back and all gears are shifting again thank you!. But the gears still pop a little when they shift im wondering if I put to much or to little atf?
first time probably 2 to 21/2 hours. Second time on another vehicle, taking screw out from side of tranny for power steering hose and dropping it under tranny, giving a lot more room. I spent little over an hour.
