New to me Hewescraft Alaskan 24. Found the livewell pump attached directly to the transom, no seacock. Head water inlet, washdown pump and fishbox all have seacocks. Why the installer didnt put a seacock on the livewell I dont know. Added a seacock to the livewell pump ASAP. I wonder if this boat had a seacock foe the livewell?
Exact thing happened to me, only they didn’t crash into me. Issued me a fine for failing to stop even though it was only forward motion keeping me from sinking. I took it to court & won. 💪🏻
I've fished the Great Lakes for 50 years and we had duplicity on everything in the boat. We maintain it each year and we do an inspection, like you would an airplane, before every trip out on the big lakes. I did some promotional work for a large boat dealer and after putting the boat in the water, I noticed the boat was taking on water. The mechanic at the shop had cracked the pipe to the livewell that circulated fresh water and when we were checking the electronics at the dock, we saw the water starting to shoot out of the back of the boat where the pipe had busted off. It took both bilge pumps going in order to back the trailer down so we could get the boat back on the trailer before it sank at the launch. Check all such connections before taking a boat out, and the reason for 2 bilge pumps is if something goes wrong with one of them. It's the same way with having 2 batteries and other important gear as well. I also have a "ditch bag", which is a floating boat bag with a portable radio, GPS, Flashlights, flares and other gear that is kept in the same spot on my boat in case something happens. It is also a good idea to get the proper size bilge pump(s) for your boat, and if they are questionable, change them out. Before the trip, check both to make sure they are in working order and not making an unusual sound. Plus, they should be really sending the water out the side of the boat and the backup pumps the water into the transom splash guard area. Use different hoses and empty locations for each bilge pump. Also, get a new plug each year and keep a good spare hanging close to the area. They are cheap and make sure they are tightened down properly and inserted all the way.
This happened on my school trip once. Teacher forgot the drain plug until we got to the middle of the lake. Then he looks at us and asks who the wize ass was whom poured water into his new boat 😭
