I was so fortunate to see him as a kid with DP on the "Come taste the band" tour, up front , at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, I was 12, but a guitar player, at the start of the show, to be honest, he was too messed up, but by the end of the show, he was great, I had a opened come taste the band album cover , it said "Tommy Bolin Is God" he saw it, as well as Glenn Hughes and they both smiled and nodded.... My second favorite guitar player, ever!! I played in a lot of bands , and went to Berklee in Boston, I turned a lot of Jazz players on to him over the 2 years I was there, everyone who heard him was thoroughly impressed. I miss him so much, Rip
The first album I ever bought with my own money was come taste of the band by Deep Purple. Did it just come out? I was 11 years old maybe 12.. I immediately started playing the guitar because of that album and have ever since it was just so good and I worked myself backwards and then forward trying to get all of the recorded things with Tommy on them that I could.. I have them all and my son just turned 20. I’ve turned him onto the music. He loves it as well.
So sad. RIP Tommy. Around 1991 or '92 I found Rich & Barb Bolin's phone number & called them from Australia. Chatted for quite some time They were amazed that I'd called them from Australia & even invited me to stay with them if I ever visited Such lovely people.
I came to Denver from CA for the Bolin tribute concert in 1998 but that was nothing compared to the guy who came all the way from Sweden. Glenn Hughes has put this out since? I agree that he should have asked permission but at the very least, he could have called just to say hello! I was pretty much aware of all things Tommy around that time but my attention soon turned to the blues, fusion and Latin jazz that Tommy so loved. I then fell way behind on other subsequent releases that were either Bolin or Tommy-related. I got the Teaser sweatshirt for Christmas in ‘98 but I would be interested in a T-shirt with the Archives logo on the back if there are any at all left over
Just saw Glenn live @valkenburg. Same great voice, but my god what a quality band mark IV was (this video). Yes, Glen @valkenburg was great, but there was no John Lord and /or Tommy Bolin. The drummer Ash Sneehan nailed it though! To all Deep Purple fans who are going to hate me now: i think 'Come taste the band' was the best DP album.... (cos i like jazz and blues too). I want to mention, i could not have lived without 'In Rock' and 'Machine Head', mostly because 'Live in Japan' changed my perspective on music, it's all about evolution).. And yes, 'Live in Japan' is the best live album ever... sorry Glenn and Tommy. But still, the fusion of hard rock and jazz made CTTB my favorite DP album. Btw. txh for for uploading, what a great concert!!! 3 great singers / frontmen and meastro's Lord and Paice backing them up.... wtf!
Saw these guys in 1973. Byrnes Auditorium on the Winthrop University campus with Browsville Station opening. Never heard of Tommy Bolin prior. And I thought Brownsville was really good. But when the JG came out and I saw Tommy with the silver suit, rainbow hair, all the smoke, holy fuck. My 14 year old brain was blown through the roof. The sounds that came out of that Echoplex were like from outer space to me. And the volume....I couldn't hear for a week. I've since then seen every guitar hero you can possibly name, but Tommy Bolin put on the most staggering guitar performace I've ever seen and is my favorite guitarist to this day. Just amazing. Roy Kenner kept stepping onto this huge organ in the orchestra pit in front of the stage. A cop finally reached up from below and tapped on his ankle with a metal flashlight to get him off of it. Roy said, "If I go through it I'll pay for it." It was hilarious.
Obviously the camera guy had no idea who the star of the show was? Lmao.... not one close up of Tommy( maybe he was strutting to much on stage and was hard to capture) thank God he was shown playing the guitar solo and the camera wasn't on the bass player.
Reality is that Tommy was ready to go solo as soon as he left Zephyr, and if he had had proper artistic and managerial direction, he never would’ve joined the James Gang or Deep Purple
@@tommybolinarchives7394yea. Everything I’ve read said he pretty much was tired of starving and joined both of those bands for the money. I’m glad he did as Bang Miami and come Taste The Band are fine albums that I still play on a regular basis
