Eeee, that were a grand wildflower verge walkabout. Lots of plant and invertebrate diversity there. I read that half of all our wildflowers are on grassy verges now that we've lost 97% of our wildflower meadows since the 40s (just looked that depressing stat up). Reminds me of the Covid time when the fields and verges grew wild and the polluting cars and planes pleasingly vanished for a while. That part of the lockdown I liked. Let's have no mow months if there's a Monkeypox lockdown soon! I had an idea what many of the plants were -- scabious, 2+ species of thistle family incl. knapweed, viper's bugloss, bedstraw, oxeye daisies, purple loosestrife, cow parsley and others? -- but I'm only sure of the obvious ones so I'll leave it at that (looking them up in guides is cheating). Ought to know what the bright red flower is and the small blue one looked like a cornflower to me but, given the location, likely isn't. Really ought to improve my wildflower knowledge! Bug-wise, there was a nice hoverfly on the umbellifer at c. 8:45, and the lovely Bumblebee at 7:45 is one of the Bombus species. By coincidence, I saw some ragwort like that at 9:00 in the local cemetery earlier today with toxic cinnabar moth caterpillars on it (black and orange banded). The field grasshopper at 10:15 looks like a common Chorthippus one, still good to watch though. Hope a keen gardener gives this a view and names those gorgeous plants. Cheerio.

Great video! So nice to see these little wild areas. I leave the seed heads on our knapweed and the finches eat them during the winter. Hello there. A bit late seeing this as I wasn't notified of it, and there's a new channel calling itself UK Amphibians just started (is that allowed?) The show of plants, particularly in flower, makes the pond. Such a contrast to the Winter video of the snowed-in pond. Your newt efts look as if they're about to lose their red gills and leave the pond. Are those Palmate Newt efts, as the Smooth Newt efts I've seen are a little less chunky -- and smaller if they're malnourished. I recall netting dozens of those efts in a shallow pond in the woods as a boy, all with enlarged heads and dark tails in response to the many dragonfly and beetle larvae in the pond. Hefty efts alright, and must be all of 4 cm. Given Nirmal's large dragonfly nymphs have recently climbed plant stems and metamorphosed hopefully what's left of his tadpoles/efts can survive now. Be watching your next one.

Hello Nirmal the Naturalist. Not keen on those dragonfly larvae, especially as there are lots of them in there you won't spot - I'd be tempted to squash some to save the coming newt efts a horrible death. One of those things zoomed across last evening when I shone a torch in. Eek! Haven't seen many damselfly nymphs despite there always being more of those visiting in summer, just a couple of small ones. The tortoiseshell cat 😺was chewing on something by the pond earlier. Not a newt, frog🐸 or one of the wild mice 🐭living in the compost heap, I hope. Summer 🌞 is a coming in. Heard my first cuckoo today by the river in Esher, which is a good sign. Also, first slow worm 🪱spotted for a while, a long female I tried to catch on the common but she zoomed away too quickly. See you around, youngster.

Hello. I notice at around 7:50 there are some sticks to aid the amphibians climbing out of the pond. Looks like the inner wall of the pond is also fairly easy for them to climb up and into the hibernaculum. I remember once having to help many froglets who'd metamorphosed in a small steep-walled council park pond and were struggling to climb out as the water level was so low. Must've been like climbing the ice-wall in Game of Thrones for those guys!

Even in December there's amphibian activity in ponds if it stays mild enough. There are still invertebrates in the pond to forage for. As a kid, my favourite pond was in the woods at Oxshott near Esher and in summer this quite shallow pond was teeming with newts, efts and many invertebrate predators. In winter visits I'd net for newts and there'd be some still active in the cool water, including some paedomorphic efts which were the size of adults but kept the red gills - like a bunch of small axolotls. If you expect freezing weather leading to icing of your pond, do you use the old trick of placing tennis balls on the water to provide easy holes for aerating the water? Don't want the 🐸hibernating in the pond to run out of oxygen or suffer from harmful gasses building up under a long-term iced pond. My Spanish Ribbed Newt survived two winters in the back garden pond quite well, even during a cold winter where the water iced over - growing to an impressive 10 inches and chunky with it. Although he took many amphibian tadpoles he was especially partial to earthworms I dropped to the pond bottom.
@UkAmphibians
@UkAmphibians 4 месяца назад
Hi Clive no I don’t bother with tennis balls in the pond they do fine if I just leave it iced over. I used to try the old trick with a pan of hot water and stand it in the ice but it soon freezes back over if it’s cold enough 🐸💚🐸
