Holidayed there in the 70s and early 80s. Visited there a few years ago and the place had hardly changed but what had done so was for the better. I was sad to hear the beach road railway had closed however.

A time when it was said Wells had more council housing per head of population than anywhere else in England. Today it is almost impossible for locals to buy even rent a home in Wells. The social cleansing of Norfolk's small towns and villages is shameful.

I've just returned from a lovely holiday in wells next to sea. Stayed at the blue skies campsite, great shower block. Went on the train to Walsingham and had coffee and cake in the cafe in the village of Walsingham, lovely welcoming lady in the cafe. Dog friendly and we got free top up of coffee. Would definitely recommend the train ride 👍 thank you for a lovely relaxing afternoon.

Thanks for putting this on here - I was in Wells today and whilst there is a resemblance to the world we see in this film, the character and atmosphere of the whole of North Norfolk is so different from the way it was when i was a kid living in a village not far from Wells. It was so much more interesting, the shipping, the shops, the historical continuity of the feel and grain of the buildings and the sense of being in a really out of the way / isolated part fo the Country - you couldnt say that now sadly. Also the lack of gentrification and the fact that the Town 'worked' and had a working purpose - all quite self contained - are so evident in the film

Yes. The non-European services carried a green board on the front at 'tween-decks level, which read "Non-Europeans Only" in English and Afrikaans.

My family were the Coxes of Wells - fishermen and lifeboatmen. Came from Sheringham to Wells in late 1800s. My Mum married Dad in 1949 so she settled in Wells but her family were West Country/Wales - coal miners and carpenters! My family history runs a bit like Poldark.

What a pity the Pre '36 Standard Stock didn't last a bit longer. I much preferred these to the later 1938 stock even when they were both running on London Transport. However, we were lucky to have the '38 stock as long as we did. I wonder how long the D78s will last on the Island?

Little train at Wells closing, Holkham Estate unwilling to renew lease, they claim train not suitable for today's visitors, my kids loved the train. Holkham Estate becoming too greedy, they shouldn't forget they receive taxpayers money to support their farming.

I'm wondering if this is two films put together. The first part, looking at the cars and fashions would seem to be late 1960s possibly very early 1970s. Then a clue at 07:38 is a sign showing train fares at 30p. Decimalization came in February 1971 so it must be very shortly after that. There then seems to be a strange inconsistency....towards the end of the film at 08:50 I'm sure that's a MkV Cortina driving by and a late 70s style Elddis caravan that would date that part much later...around 1980?!
@kevinparker461
@kevinparker461 4 года назад
Thinking exactly the same by the cars, don't think the estate car as they were turning the train was a Cortina. But most of the vehicles at the start of the film point to late 60s, a good view of the number plate would be a better clue. but a fantastic record of those times.
