Thanks for this! I am the flight commander at my squadron and I have a cadet who is Senior Airman and has been at that rank for over two years 😳. Anyway, everyone has been trying to get them to promote but they are really struggling. I think this video might really help them so I am going to send it to them. Maybe it will further their progress? I really hope so. I love your vids and thanks for all the time you put into them. 🫡
I have a question about the ribbon rack. Currently my daughter only has one ribbon (just got her first achievement last night), so I’m assuming the ribbon rack isn’t really “needed” at this time. When she has more ribbons do you keep getting a new ribbon rack to accommodate the number of ribbons earned? Or can we buy a ribbon rack that holds more ribbons than she currently has?
I attended encampment twice as a senior member. The first time I worked more closely with the cadets and was able to attend most of the fun activities, like visiting a local Air Force Base. Then it was found out that I could cook and spent half of my first encampment working in the kitchen and all of the second encampment. 200 cadets can really put some chow away! Still it was enjoyable and I learned a lot. (CAP retired 1998-2018)
When I first joined CAP in 1998, I tried to get into a specialty track that related to my military specialty. I got nowhere at the time because the support just wasn't available. After sitting as a 2lt for a couple of years, our squadron commander got me interested in Personnel & Administration. The specialty tracks were somewhat easier to accomplish at the time and I found that I was good in those positions. Before I knew it I had advanced to Captain. After that I took on Safety, Aerospace Education and Cadet Programs, eventually completing level 5 training. Best advice is to pick something easy to work on first, then maybe something tougher later. (CAP retired 1998-2018)
hey, I'm coming close to my chief rank do you have any study guides like, I know use Smally's civil air patrol guide for my wright brothers. do you have any others to recommend?
Question....Have you or have you known a Senior Member who attended the Hawk Mountain Ranger School? If so, how was it? Does it truly train as well as it advertises?
A few things that weren't mentioned in the video but I thought are interesting: All of the personnel that acquire the grade of Colonel, by default, only have that grade temporarily. It is only upon the successful completion of their duties (and in most cases the recommendation/approval of a higher authority) that they get to keep their grade permanently. Additionally, other people can be promoted up to Colonel without serving in those command positions or special billeted positions if they meet the "Exceptional Qualifications" standard. Finally, those who serve as National Commander/Vice Commander will also keep their grade permanently upon the successful completion of their term (and in the case of the Vice Commander by the recommendation of the National Commander), unless later revoked by the Board of Governors.
Possibly, it could show that you have a sense of dedication and ability to work towards a goal which looks really good. But staffing outside of a squadron, no.
If you are thinking about encampment, probably not. Things that look really good on resumes specifically for staffing encampment are wing level cadet honor societies, wing/region leadership academies, and perhaps advanced training squadron
I am joining as a 17 year old. I joined the scouts a couple months ago and it feels slow moving, how long until you will be able to fly or go out on search / rescue missions as a new member?
It depends on the resources and personnel in your local area. My recommendation would be to talk to your unit's emergency services officer or operations officer to see what opportunities are available. Many wings try to do search and rescue exercises every month or every other month, and some have ground and air operations, while other training opportunities may focus on one or the other. Make sure you take a look at the learning management system and complete your General Emergency Services (GES) training if you haven't already! There is also the online portion of Introductory Communications User’s Training (ICUT) in the learning management system, and that is a requirement before you can do the hands-on evaluation to be signed off to use radios.
After joining CAP in April 2024 I've learned a lot, but this is very educational and I'll be sure to share this with friends / new cadets. -C/A1C Moore
Great video. I just sent this to my local sqad leaders and CAP Legacy HQ. You are absolutely correct in your assessment. "Working together is the key to our CAP membership."
I go to my first CAP meeting next week. I have a few friends that are in CAP and they invited me! I will be having to apply for a Curry Voucher, but I’m still so excited! I also know another friend who is joining so I’m very excited! Any tips for your first 3 meetings?
