That phenomenon is called “Learned Helplessness”, which trauma therapists discuss. The animal is so traumatized (mainly because it is punished for leaving the crate or when it does (sometimes with awful things)). So then it loses all sense of itself and its ability to leave. Mostly about being so damaged from the trauma. It’s so sad.
