This was New York before Air Conditioning. Not an original statement of mine. Saw it penciled in the margin of Saul Bellow's Henderson the Rain King. In the Berkeley Public Library.
Folks overlook the fact Marty was hen pecked by his controlling mother. When Marty finally took his relationship into his own hands, he became a man, worthy of female companionship. The Word of God instructs a man to leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife. The Wife is his Queen and He is the King. Mother should be respected, but NEVER placed before the Wife. It’s not a genuine man who does this, but still a little boy controlled and dominated by the Mother.
Marty is such a jerk he just complaines the whole time on his date and doesn't let the girl speak, then he basically forces himself on her then talks to his best friend the same way people used to talk down to him. Marty sucks
I had to find out what this movie was since I kept seeing the scene where Marty and his mother were discussing why he thinks he’ll never get married because women don’t seem to want him. While I’m not on board with marriage these days, I understand at the time what a man like Marty would value most and how the people close to him would tell him one thing but expect him to remain the same miserable sod they seem to him him to be. I like this scene because he finally stands up and decides what’s good for him.
I can see why this is one of Donald Trump's favorite movies. Wonder if he ever realized he is Norma Desmond. _I just want to tell you all how happy I am to be back on the trail, making a campaign again! You don't know how much I've missed all of you. And I promise you I'll never desert you again because after 2024 we'll make another campaign and another campaign. You see, this is my life! It always will be! There's nothing else! Just us, the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark!… All right, Mr. Carlson, I'm ready for my close-up._
Someone said that this is just like our modern media, especially the entertainment part of it- convinced they're making such masterpieces in absolute complete delusion. This movie came long before my time and I have a hard time watching old stuff but, I got into Casablanca, so who knows, maybe I'll give this one a shot. This scene and the synopsis make it sounds very interesting.
The main thing is to remember that none of it really matters. Don't get too attatched to things. Learn to let go. It's like a Chinese finger trap. Your body just wants to inseminate some eggs, it's nothing to lose your head over.
Marty 2 seconds after finding a girl devolved into judgy petty behavior. "you are not married yo should be ashamed of yourself!!!" Reflection of nonsensical conformist culture of the time and petty human psyche.
Back in the day Hollywood made good films and shows without having to inject 10 or 20 minutes of gratuitous sex filler into the plot. What happened? Lack of writer talent? Lazy? Trying to compete with the porn industry?
Dude stop. Can you all please, PLEASE stop posting this SAME DAMN COMMENT on every old movie video. There is so much good art being made right now, all you have to do is go look for it. They made slop back then too.
The whole point of the film isn't that he couldn't find a girl sooner; it's about Marty realizing that giving up on finding his somebody was wrong. Never give up.
Don't base happiness around a woman, especially modern power guurls, they're all the same, users. Nothing wrong in living alone, get a couple of cats, I recommend Abyssinian breed. Marriage is just hard work, pain, dealing with crap and moods from a woman, they really best avoided, and I do wish God had never created Eve and the others, just to ruin our lives.
"they're all the same". That's not true. For one, don't ever deal in absolutes like that, at least say "most of them" but even then you're wrong. If you want to help modern women be better, then you have to be part of the solution. Whining about it doesn't help.
There is something wrong with living alone, biologically speaking. True, ultimately nothing matters. But you're a homosapien. You're evolved to be social, and to mate. You don't have to follow that path, or you may fail and fall off that path...or a bit of both. But make sure you know what the deal is.
Such a wonderful movie. It is the perfect barometer for mental health. If you don't like this movie, you have some serious problems and you need to work on yourself. If you like it, you see the good in life and the importance of caring for someone, for loving someone. It is a beautiful movie.
Ernest borgnine was one of the most versatile actors I have ever seen he can play The worst bad guy in the most believable way and then do a roll like this in Marty and pull it off amazingly, it is said that he was one of the nicest persons that you would ever want to meet
I am marty, 31 and lonely, but without the good ending. That’s film’s stuff. Being a good man it’s like having an umbrella during sunny days and no clouds around.
I'm exactly 31 as well, so I feel compelled to comment...me, I'm mostly a loner with only a few friends and family. Never had sex. My first kiss was with a young woman in a Shanghai night club, pretty sure she was a "lady of the night" advertising her "wares". Anyway, I really have nothing to say other than a sincere wish that whoever you are, you have some good times on this Earth before the end of everything.
This scene is so funny. He’s listening to his friends drone on with the same conversation they always have and suddenly thinks “wait a second, this sucks!” And in the span of 20 seconds turns into the exact kind of person he hated at the start of the movie.
