It Don't Mean a Thing_If It Ain't Got That 'Swing' [Duke Ellington] 스윙의 정의는 두가지로 나뉜다. 대표적으로는 재즈 초창기부터 40년대 중 후반 비밥이 등장하기 이전까지의 댄스곡을 위한 빅밴드 연주를 일컫지만 금주법, 세계대공황, 2차 세계대전 등 악재가 겹치며 관련하여 재정 부족으로 빅밴드들이 사라지면서 스윙의 시대는 끝났다.
다른 하나는 기존 스윙재즈의 스윙리듬이 전체적인 재즈음악의 기본리듬으로 활용되며 즉흥연주를 섞어 스탠다드 재즈의 요소로서 많이 활용하게 되었다. 미묘한 음의 리듬을 들었을 때 느껴지는 (흔히 '그루브'나 모호한 표현으로 일컬어지는) 리듬에 맞추어 고개나 발끝을 까딱이게 하는 작위적이지 않은 자연스러운 신체적 반응들을 일컫는 의미이기도 하다. 때문에 재즈 팬들 사이에서는 'Swinging'이라는 또 다른 표현으로 5~60년대 밥이나 쿨 재즈 리듬 중 선별적으로 적용시키고 있다.
재즈 연주자 쿠티 윌리엄스(Cootie Williams)가 스윙을 정의해 달라는 요청을 받았을 때 "스윙을 정의해? 나는 아인슈타인의 이론을 다루는 편이 낫겠다!" 라고 일갈했다.
스윙에 대하여 빌 트레드웰(Bill Treadwell)은 다음과 같이 말한 바 있다. "결국 가장 좋은 대답은 먼 곳을 바라보며 한숨 쉬는 것일 겁니다. 느끼기는 하지만 설명할 수는 없군요"라고... 스윙은 그런 것이다.
