My guess is that you're looking at $6K or $7K to get this car right. Is it worth it to the owner?

That's definitely the amount I was thinking. The owner is thinking a couple hundred dollars to get it back on the road. It's just not possible.

The junk that you saw in that pump filter is nothing compared to what that Monster Transmissions torque converter dumped into the cooler and radiator of the vehicle. You NEED to completely flush the transmission cooler system on that vehicle of you have any hopes of that transmission lasting. We've seen a number of Monster's junk units here at the trans shop I work at. None have worked or lasted. Many did not have the parts in them that Monster claimed and charged to be installed. They are thieves and do not stand behind anything they sell.
@dustinatwood7077
@dustinatwood7077 9 дней назад
Thank you so much for the insight! I sure thought I was dealing with a good company. Now I sure know. We will either hot flush it or put an external cooler.
@BillyWillicker
@BillyWillicker 8 дней назад
@@dustinatwood7077 Keeping the cooler in the radiator is much more effective than an add-on cooler alone. If you have no way to get the radiator's trans cooler completely clean, just get a new radiator - not a used one. I've seen people ruin their transmission with a used radiator that had a plugged/contaminated trans cooler in it.

My mom bought a 88 Cutlass Supreme Classic new and it sat in her garage from what I can tell from around 2001 to 2016 when she gave it to me with 67K miles. The car looks almost new inside and out but as soon as I got it off the trailer it popped a break line from the rust. All the brakes were freezing up from rust after I replaced some brake lines. The radiator was full of rust so I had to change that and the heater core that popped too. Everything cleaned up nice except the rust on the original water pump. The tires were from 2001. After putting a rebuilt carb on it I have it running real smooth. I wonder what it is worth with 67K miles on it? 100% original except for the stuff I replaced. Was never smoked in which is a plus. Hi Dustin: Just curious as to where was the car sitting, if outside (for the looks of it that seems the case) or in an enclosed garage. I own a 2006 Toyota 4Runner which I have kept in storage and only has 6,700 mile, however, I check on it almost weekly and take it for a short drive as well. I change the oil annually and check the tire pressure every 2 weeks. Keep it immaculate, including the undercarriage and have not noticed any signs of damage in the wiring or plastic components. Is this enough or should I be doing other things? Please advise. Thanks!
@dustinatwood7077
@dustinatwood7077 10 дней назад
Great question. I should have put that in the video. The past owner parked it in the yard for years. Outside and the rodents took it over and made a home. With it never being moved. You're doing all the right things! The only thing I would suggest is some form of rodent prevention. Mothballs or other products. Better safe than sorry.

Over and over, when I drive my 50 year old cars around, someone will come up and tell me they have something in their garage with no miles on it, and now it has a leaky oil pan, or the tires are rotted, etc. I tell them to plan on spending $1500 to get it running again. Change all the fluids, filters, tires, and have the brakes gone over. If you want to own an old car, drive it. They are not coffee tables. Don't let them fall apart. If nothing else, sell them to someone who will appreciate them. Don't hoard things you don't have a use for.

All new fluids, probably need a bunch of new seals and gaskets too. Hard to think it is worth it, unless diy project.

I just watched the first video and never gave thought of a follow up. I am a seventy four year old man who worked years ago as a mechanic. What I am thinking aliens with my first glimpse of it. Cost of repairs outway the real value left for a sellable vehicle. You doing your own work saves a ton of money but even your time is not free. A replacement wiring harness to alleviate chasing your tail is easier but expensive, likely not available either. I look at it as a parts car, and only someone who has to fix temporarily a rig to go to work, spite smell and loss of heat or air... even filters are very expensive now. I would not trust the best tire for a good spare.

Definitely drive your vehicle. If not, all the fluids will eventually become contaminated, and the fluids are not circulating through the hoses and systems. The outside elements will definitely ruin your vehicle, especially the paint. Tires will go flat or get flat spots, battery will not work or get weak, car will not start etc, etc. Cars are meant to be driven. That's what they are made for.

I inherited a supercharged Pontiac Grand Prix from my father after he passed away. I live about 3 hours away and it was just sitting in my grandmother's driveway. I did my best to keep it running and maintain it. I had a solar battery maintainer and car cover over it, but ultimately I decided to pass on to a family member who probably uses it more than I would’ve. It’s not good to let them sit without driving it at least twice a week and getting it up to 55 mph for a few minutes to warm up the oil and keep the tires round and the rotors from pitting. They will lot rot and deteriorate overall if you just let them sit.

Last year we put a Toyota Landcruser back on the road that had been parked in a shed for 15 years. We replaced every rubber hose and clip or clamp. Went through brakes, new radiator, clutch universal joists, shocks all fluids 2 tie rod ends much work probably needed doing when it was parked but got done all in one hit. It cost $9000 plus tyres. Less than $1000 per year. It has just done a trip around Australia with total reliability and is capable of going for another trip. It now shows 450000 km. If they are sound I reckon they are worth the effort.

As I looked at this video I really thought it was more about poor storage than when a car sits. I restore and collect roadsters and they are driven seasonally. The cars are stored in low humidity and heated winter storage and honestly there is no damage from year to year. Key is quality of storage facility.
