Nice one, thanks for that. I'm waiting for some amateur expert to say it's 'too small'. Some future trivia for you. The WSI Airport layout 82MAP (the 2060s layout) shows an APM (automatic people mover) from this freight facility across to the passenger terminals (not into the first one now mostly constructed, but into the horizontal bar in the 'H' pattern of all the future terminals); obviously running under the relevant aprons and taxiways.

Bad idea dumping M12 traffic onto the M7 where when it was opened should’ve been done 3-4 lanes each way straight away. Will the M12 ever continue straight to Sydney CBD on one side and Silverdale on the other? That would make too much sense…. Also when is the new M9 gonna go ahead? Again common sense would be before the new airport opens… at least between Campbelltown and Richmond for now.

Probably never. Given the growth of Western Sydney and the plans for the airport etc, I would have though 4 * 4 should have been done, but at least 3 * 3 as you say. We have the same problem in Perth. Things left for years like Roe Fwy that can't cope with the traffic and still has intersections with two other freeways on along its route that cause massive tail backs. Great video as always BJD!

Smart thing would’ve been 4-5 lanes straight away back in the day. Now it’s just costing lot of extra bucks and because of the roadworks it’s absolutely shocking and they’re not shy to raise tolls every so often 🤦‍♂️

Nice update. I go through the M7/M12 construction fairly regularly. It's fascinating to watch the way they launch the sections of elevated roadway. Just a thought, next time you are down at WSI airport, I noticed there is construction of the freight facility at the southern end underway. Have driven past the runway approach on Elizabeth Drive in the evening a few times. Occasionally they have the full runway and high intensity approach lighting (HIAL) switched on. The lighting is multi-stage for different conditions, and I suspect it was turned up to the highest level (usually used for very low vsibility approaches) - it was seriously bright in the direction that aircraft approach.

Can someone confirm for me if it will open with 7 or 14 gates? Originally I thought it was 7, with two aero bridges per gate. But if 14, there isn't much room for larger aircraft. Flights to SIN will be using at least a A330 or larger, so in that situation is it limited to just one aero bridge? For situations where larger aircraft are at a gate, will there be enough room for adjasent aircraft?
@MrJpblue1000
@MrJpblue1000 16 дней назад
each stand will accommodate the larger aircraft which can be served by two airbridges. or each stand can serve two smaller aircraft each served by a single airbridge. Internally the building is segregated such you can load and unload different aircraft next to one another on the same stand without arrival/departures contamination.

This airport is to be 24hrs operation, supposedly the metro will be also, but the trains will be shut down between 12 ad 3 am, what do passengers do to get to city or any other part of the Sydney region. You get one or two planes landing in middle of night, and they all won't fit on the Night Ride bus. Better build a lot of hotels and motels in St Marys!

Yes that’s true I guess they will have to alter the existing train schedule from stmarys to city to o accommodate .
@JayJayGamerOfficial

The metro is apparently going to run to the same schedule as the train network so you would assume they would have 24/7 busses running to and from the airport from key locations.
@tacitdionysus3220
@tacitdionysus3220 17 дней назад
Some thoughts: - only about 20% of passengers are expected to use the train. - Even if the metro were working very late, the connecting Sydney Trains / Buses would not - -Domestic flights peak in the morning and evening. These are not discounted and most passengers are travelling for business and drive to the airport. Even so, using the metro to catch a 6am flight is quite do-able. - Most flights are at times people want to fly or at least tolerate to fly, not some ungodly hour - West to east may be the hardest. Sydney is 2 hrs behind NZ, and the flight is just over 3 hrs.To arrive in NZ at 6 am, would need to leave Sydney before 1 am, which means getting to the airport about 11 pm. Metro is still running. - Even at 24 hr airports, departing flights thin out during very late hours The proposed Singapore flights want to arrive there early in the morning (say 6 am). Need to leave 8 hrs (Sydney Time) before, which is 10 pm - metro is running. - The exceptions are flights running late (can happen any time) and night freighters (who don't need passenger handling facilities) - It's far less constrictive than the Sydney Airport curfew, which is 11am to 6am

The overall shape is there, but there's a long way to go yet. Best part of 2026 will be spent in testing and calibrating everything, especially stuff like the Cat IIIB instrument approach system for auto-landing aircraft in very low visibility. I think setting the target opening date as the last day of 2026 is tempting fate. Some parts have barely been started; For example, there's only a concrete pad on the western side where the aviation rescue and fire-fighting station is to be built. The internal construction of the metro stations are only just commencing and so on.

@tacitdionysus3220 16 дней назад
@@BigJayDogAdventures It's on the western side, several hundred metres SW of the tank farm. It has a road in front that goes right out to the runway. There's also a 'parking area' nearby, which I think is the marshalling area for external emergency services' to assemble and meet the Airport Safety Officers to escort them to the scene. Four firefighting vehicles are on order (Oshkosh Striker Volterras); the first time PHEVs airport appliance are being used in Australia. These are very high performance vehicles designed to reach any part of the movement area in 2 minutes, and quickly create a fire free area around a crashed aircraft to enable safe evacuation/rescue. Aviation Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) are provided at a federal level by Airservices Australia, the same organisation that provides air traffic control services. A second station will be constructed in the future in a mirrored position to cover the second runway.
@Bantil562

It is 80% complete and testing will begin well before 2026. In the latest update it advised testing starting in October. Won’t be long before drone usage in the area will be banned.

Great video BJD 👍🏻 I know I’m going to get slaughtered for saying this, but I think it’s best to use WSI rather than WSA. I know WSA is the acronym but for airports, the three digit code WSI is much more important for travellers to be familiar with, especially since it’s a new airport.
@BigJayDogAdventures
@BigJayDogAdventures 20 дней назад
Maybe going forward it would make sense
@tacitdionysus3220
@tacitdionysus3220 17 дней назад
It depends a bit who you are talking to: WSI is the IATA Code (which is concerned with airlines as businesses - mostly people come across it as the airport code on their luggage tag or ticket, although it can refer to locations other than airports (not sure but it might be used for places like off-airport luggage dropping points). There is also the ICAO code which is of interest mainly to navigation, operations and pilots. It has four letters, the first is the country (Australia = Y), the second is the Flight Information Area (Sydney and other places roughly in NSW use S) and the last two identify the airport itself. So for Western Sydney Airport it's YSWS and the current Sydney Airport is YSSY. You'll see them used in flight plans, maps, charts, reporting points and so on. However, if you Google official documents (like reports, construction plans etc.) about the airport they usually use WSA (even after WSI was awarded as the IATA Code - Go figure. To confuse it even more, some airports (or older hands working at them) use historical acronyms like KSA (Kingsford Smith Airport). Haven't yet seen anyone reference Nancy Bird Walton (NBW) airport though. As far as being relevant for passengers WSI (or WSI Airport) is probably the most helpful, but it's not especially evil to do otherwise.

@tacitdionysus3220
@tacitdionysus3220 17 дней назад
If you get a hold of the Airport Site Layout 10 MAP and 82 MAP online you can see how it will be set up for 10 million passengers per year (initially) and for 82 million (roughly expected in the 2060s). It's really interesting to peruse. Those are not gates as such (but if you look at front of the terminal face you can see bay numbers on yellow signs). They are 'piers' and this specific type is a fairly new approach in airport design. Most will have two aerobridges used for boarding, plus door exits for ground/bus boarding at apron level. They can accomodate one wide body jet using two aerobridges, or two domestic size jets using one aerobridge for each, or four smaller aircraft with ground boarding. When two domestic jets are docked, one will have its nose in between the piers, while the other has its nose in to the end of the pier. It will start with the 7 piers, that will give it a capacity like Canberra or Gold Coast. The 'wings' of the first terminal will (as patronage grows) be extended to eventually have about 25 piers, with 82 Map showing about 80 in total, although some may be smaller ground level boarding devices for weather proof boarding of smaller aircraft. Eventually there will be four terminals all interconnected to form a large H pattern between the two parallel runways (some earlier artists impressions may show earlier proposals). The metro station/s (there will be another) are centred just under the 'bar' of the 'H' When you see the place in the flesh it doesn't look small any more, and I find it difficult to imagine it in its final form. A good way (apart from going and getting up close) to see the scale of it is to have a look on Google maps and measure the size of it. Then (while keeping the same scale) scroll across to Sydney Airport and compare it with the size of terminals there.
