Hey Dr. Byrd, not sure if you remember me but it's Kevin from 2016 US History class at Hazelwood. Just wanted to say you were the best teacher in that whole school and were a role model for us all, and I'm sorry this loss has stricken you and your family so greatly. Keep up the good spirits and keep chasing that vision, always! It's what Louie would want for yall
Dear soul, thank you for sharing your grief about your sweet Louie. I, too, had to make that hard decision 2 months ago to help my baby girl, Nala, transition. The silence our home is deafening but the love and the lessons she taught us: unconditional love, patience, gratitude, forgiveness, it's ok to be goofy and have fun....still ring in our hearts. Thank you for being vulnerable, thank you for being real. Blessings to you and your family.

Thank you so much "Dr. Byrd," for sharing this very important speech/sermon. It's similar to the Prophets of "Israel, in the 'Old Testament; as well as both, The Lord 'Jesus Christ,' and His disciples messages and ways, of the "New Testament."☝🏾🙏🏾
I find these shows repulsive and I never understood how anyone could evaluate a person based upon their skin pigment. It seems so random. Why the white paste on the lips? Seems very weird.
I recently visited the New Britain Museum of American Art, the decent said that the ghost dance was likely taken from the shakers. I said I have a hard time believing that. So I came on line to look into it. What I am finding is that the shakers were not even in America yet, (which is why I was not believing it to be true) i could not find anything that resembles their claim. I wrote a letter telling them, and that I was hoping the info I found is correct, that they notify the guests who took the tours that received the mis-information so they can correct it, as well as letting me know If what I thought was wrong, was in fact true. I have not received an answer as of yet. Is there anything you can say to clarify??
I read this book and the most horrifying part to me was the blue milk because they would put formaldehyde in it to stretch shelf life and how Europeans that had just got here thought that this must be normal here in the USA.
This would have been a epic rock song for the radio commercials for classic rock in the 70s. Pardon me for saying it and excuse my French but this rock jingle for Subway kicks ass.
There is really a lot more to the story than this. Minstrel shows did showcase racial prejudices of the time, but they also played an important role in the abolitionist movement. In fact, minstrel shows were banned in Confederate States during the Civil War due to some of the popular tropes being sympathetic to the plight of freed slaves. Black people did not only pitch the tents at these shows, many featured black performers, and there were some all black troupes. Did they make fun of black people? Yes (as some others have mentioned, black comedians even today sometimes make fun of black people- it can be either mean spirited or not depending on the context). But they also did feature some legitimate aspects of black culture, introducing music and dance inspired by the culture of (and sometimes performed/composed by) African Americans to new audiences, and was in many ways as much a birthplace of music traditions such as the blues and ragtime (which later inspired the development of jazz) as were music being played in local black communities. Seeing the racial caricatures now makes us understandably uncomfortable, but it wasn’t necessarily always meant to be as ugly and mean as it became amidst the racial strife that happened in the early/mid 20th century.
Rather amusing but seriously lacking facts, nothing about the Morrell act, tell us who was being Taxed by a disproportionately amount to finance the government?
Minstrel shows were designed to alleviate feelings of guilt and anxiety about black Americans. By promulgating these ugly stereotypes white audiences had their prejudices of superiority reinforced.
The standard bearer of conscientious resistance to imperialism and racism, which he mentioned by name in another speech calling it a "fraternity" of Asian, Indiginous, and Africa peoples (non-white). A good book on the secretive military operation against three generations of the King Family, the true crime graphic novel, FREEDDOM FIGHTER by Wayne Coe.
I will be 55 years old this month. I always had hoped that we would turn the page, understand how damaging racism (both explicit or implicit) it is and eventually will put the ignorance aside and go on together. Unfortunately I have to say that we have not progressed in fact in the past 8 or more years has regressed by decades in racism. I hope that I am wrong but honestly I have pretty much given up hope. Racism is a cancer that is eating away at this country and instead of trying to heal it, the rich and powerful are trying to spread it in other areas such as misogyny and bigotry of religion, language, and the disabled. Its not being healed. Instead it is spreading. Thank God I never had kids.
I'm not Jewish, but I'm of German ancestry. I think it's absolutely macabre that all 937 Jewish ✡️ passengers were lulled into a false sense of security by that Hitler CREEP and his NAZI followers. There's no way the Kaiser Wilhelm II would've done such a horrible thing. It's just so awful and sad that the rest of the world didn't help over 6 million people refuge into other countries. We had plenty of room in Australia 🇦🇺 for them, and they would've been so far away from those murdering nazis. If only the internet was available in those years, none of this would've happened. It's just so very sad 😢😢😢
I’m doing an exhibit at Cupertino historical museum on Fremont older the newspaper editor with an extensive section on this bombing. Older spent the rest of his life fighting for Mooney and Billings he didn’t live to see them free
Un épisode terrible et terrifiant comme l'a été cette sale guerre. Les humains en tireront ils les leçons pour que règne la paix dans le monde ? Il semble que ce ne soit pas dans l'ordre du possible, hélas.

Today's equivalent of the Minstrel show is "gangsta rap". It promotes negative stereotypes about black men, disparages black women as promiscuous gold-diggers, and glorifies violence.
