Great video . Can’t believe it’s 35 years ago . 1989 was good because by that time main line stock was mostly in intercity red stripe livery and dvts had yet to appear !
The final few class 27s in service were all withdrawn in Jul/Aug 1987, so this footage was taken only about 2 months before the end. They lost their final passenger diagrams (Edinburgh to Dundee stopping services) in May 87 and spent their last couple of months idling around Scottish yards and depots...it's likely the cameraman sought them out knowing they were about to be completely withdrawn in a few weeks' time.
Wow! Millerhill as I remember it. And Monktonhall colliery too! A far cry from what it looks like today. Wish it was still a marshalling yard and loco depot.
Excellent. I remember that 26 with the headcode discs sitting redundant at Polmadie beside a withdrawn 25. My dad's mate took me a visit to Polmadie round about the same time as this video
Excellent film! Good to see the selection of diesels at Southampton, but no Class 33 (?) - perhaps the Portsmouth/Bristol had gone over to dmu by this time. At Bristol, nice to see several of the Cl47 with headcode boxes and the black domino marker lights. I always thought this looked smarter than the all yellow end with marker lights. Great film, thanks for sharing
Watched a number of your films so far; what I like is that you capture the everyday rail activity in and around stations, yards and not just the passing trains. Many pleasant memories have been jogged by your films. Even allowing for the drop in picture quality of these older VHS video tapes, there is some really good film coverage, audio quality and panning shots of the wider rail scene and not just the loco in question. Thanks for editing and sharing these.
Too be fair the train might of been a portion of a train to add to another further down the line...but yes seems excessive also might of been for drivers traction knowledge or return loco working back to home depot...😮
What a gem of a video. I am an ex Derby driver and although Masborough was closed when I was there I stopped many times waiting the road off the Beighton branch to access the main line, and often wondered what the station was like in its heyday. I particularly enjoyed the class 45....
Superb footage. stood there a few times over the years. we called it Grassy Banks in steam days. The sidings for the Camp Hill bankers was just the other side of the bridges on the left.Usually three 3fs there. The diesel bankers were up nearer Saltley depot by the gas works. Happy days.
I remember going to Salisbury on a Merrymaker tour from Stockport in the 1980s. It was a meka for 33s with the odd 50 thrown in. Thanks for the memory.
Many happy memories.....something quite special about the grubby appearance of the locos compared to the corporate perfection of today!! Left this station many times in my early teens on Merrymakers tours....furthest I went was Paignton and I was only 13/14 at the time. Imagine this happening today!
I seem to recall a really husky female voice doing the announcements at Sheffield in the 1980's. She even used to mention "chip butties"....love the Peaks.
Great Video the amount of Coal trains in the yard awaiting dispatch is amazing . 58003 looks as if its just been named at Markham pit . Superb capture well done .
