According to the historians Rod De' Ath had zero rehearsal & didn't even meet Rory Gallagher until the evening of this performance, just prior to going on-stage with him. Now that Is flying by the seat of your Rock & Roll pants! Just goes to show, rehearsing & practicing are overrated!
It'll be 50 years on November 1st that I saw Rory at the Montreal Forum. Rush and Nazareth were the back up bands. We walked in on Rush who had just started their first song. I had been to a lot of concerts, but had never heard anything like Geddy. I compared his screaming to that of Robert Plant and Ian Gillan. What a fantastic night of music.
I was 13 when this show came to Piere's. My parents were at this show and my dad got his autograph on his Blues Deluxe CD. My dad also handed his phone to Joe so he could say Hi to 13 year old me...I'll never forget that.
Someone ought to put his best performances on dvd and tour that around the cimemas. Put that bad boy up on the big screen where he belongs. Introduce him to a whole new generation of fans. Turn em all into heads that rock.
His guitar solo ideas is endless you can tell his creativity was a way level up than many so called legendary guitarists you can tell when they are beginning to run out ideas on stage with recycled solo but this genius just went on and on and never bored you with the same licks
Gerry McAvoy on bass, a few years ago he teamed up with Rory's one time drummer Ted McKenna and toured with a Dutch whizz kid called Mark Scherpenzeel showcasing Rory's music. Saw them at our local music venue, Ted and Gerry tore it up as an amazing rhythm section and Mark was as good as Rory.
I prefer the Beat Club version where he uses the Stramp and the tremolo effect with a slightly cleaner toan but this is just awesomeness personificationess.
I would love to say that I was in the crowd or front row of this absolute beautiful performance by Joe I can say this was the first song I had ever heard him play and I was hook ever since.
Great line up although Lou martin brought something to the sound later down the line, rod d’eath saved their skulls one night in a pool hall in Texas, no funk with the Welshman, he told the red necks where to go
