We use Day One finishing aid. It’s incredibly forgiving. We apply and bull float till we get the desired creamy surface. The timing is quite forgiving also

You really need a sledge type hand hammer to beat those stakes in. They work a lot better than a carpenter's hammer. A two to four pounder, depending on what you are more comfortable with swinging.
