Irreversible chemical changes occur with oil during frying - polymerization, oxidation, hydrolysis. Decomposition products contaminate the oil, even if they are not visible to the naked eye. This means that even if you filtered such oil and removed the particles of burnt food, it still contains harmful impurities. Alternatively you could do what most people do - sieve the used oil and re-use it several times, before replacing with new! That cornflour trick is a lot of work.

All I do is allow to settle and cool. Afterwards I put it in the freezer. When next I use it, I scrape out as much as I need and leave the big bits behind. No, I don't get as much oil as I started with but it's better than going without, if i don't have the wherewithal to get more.
