That first piece being so plain might not be so awful if you could find a complementary matching sized piece to split it up with. One idea I had would be to make it into a checkerboard pattern with a darker colored wood. Or you could simply layer it up with other wood grains and find a combination that makes it work well. The second piece turned out well, hopefully you found some other use for the first piece.
Quite astonishing how a very unassuming piece of scrap wood can end up looking so beautiful after a few hours in your workshop. Great work again Harry. I had to enjoy it on x.25 speed again though Harry! Longer at the end please sir?!
