LOL fantastic story time! Also omg you said about book hauls "you're just doing it for content", no I'm literally not even thinking about potential videos when I walk into a bookstore. I am just possessed by a spirit, something comes over me and even though I have so many books I can't stop from getting more!!
If you need encouragement, Atwood's Blind Assassin is a great book. You should check out Oryx and Crake, also by Margaret Atwood. Jung is fascinating and may spur you to read fiction influenced by Jung like Hesse's novels. Anything by Maugham is worth reading (obviously I am a fan).
Omg I needed this. I too have unwittingly collected like 5 Maugham books - including Cakes and Ale 😅. I’ve started The Razors Edge and love the premise. I have to get bk to it. I read The Executioners So g one Summer as a teenager and still think about it. Running as Therapy?!? That’s right up my alley.
I felt like watching your old video of you driving around and shopping for books because I’m homesick for the US, so I went to look for it. And it’s no longer there… The betrayal…💔 Put it back, please. 😂 The Dracula one was good, too.
this video is the perfect mixture of silly goose and intellectualism and classics and everything that i love about books and the internet. good genre, perfect video. no notes. i will be sending this to my plethora of fellow silly gooses (my friends) and they will not understand and will shake their heads at me but i love this
If you ever come to the Pacific Northwest, go to Portland and visit Powell's books. It spans a full city block, and you could pitch a tent there and take a month to go through their inventory. Amazing! BTW I've started the Three Body Problem trilogy. It's amazing.
The "getting burnt out on fiction after reading too many back-to-back lemons" experience is so relatable. Grabbed a couple food-related microhistories (Cod and Girly Drinks) recently for the same reason.
Obsessed with the intros that feel like a rant your mom would immediately start in on as soon as you pick up her phone call that go on so long that she ultimately forgets why she called in the first place. You're literally still talking about carrot juice shopping and I'm at least 4 minutes in. Not being facetious- fully sincere.
What a journey of accents this was! When the TJ's cashier asks me about my plans for the rest of the day I always wish I had something exciting to say like, "oh, I'm rehearsing for a play" or "traveling to Spain" instead of just, I don't know, laundry and a crossword puzzle? Quit shaming your customers Trader Joe's! The apple shortbread cookies they have right now are 🔥🔥🔥, btw
A solution for your odd number of items issue: bring a reusable bag (TJ sells them) so you don’t feel pressured to buy more stuff just to fill the paper bags. Enjoyed the story time 👍🏻
"a castrated Elizabeth Strout" 🤡🤡🤡 i've been trying to pinpoint a way to describe Tyler's writing and this could not be further from the truth. also would love to know what else king is consuming. The Sopranos is something i'm saving until i'm on my deathbed lowkey
Yet another wonderful book haul video!!! 🎉 Norman Mailer's two books and Somerset Maugham's novels look mighty interesting- I may just have to add these authors to my own wishlist!!! If in the future these books are not your cup of tea ☕, save them and I will buy them from you (Somerset Maugham and Norman Mailer)!!!!! May you have a marvelous, autumnal week: Laugh, smile, take care, have an absolute BLAST and until next time, colossal Mr. Charles!!!!! 🍁🍂😃
Omg if you are getting into fairytales you MUST read Angela Carter’s A Bloody Chamber. Don’t you dare skip it! You must get a copy and read it! We have very similar tastes in books so I’m convinced you’d love it. The writing is the most gorgeous writing I’ve ever stumbled on and I’ve read thousands of books at this point! The tales are all based on actual fairy tales but they are dark, se*ual in nature(some are), but my good gawd, I’ve never read prose as sumptuous as what’s in that book!
fyi charles puts all these books on his multiple credit cards. his gradual descent into madness (as recorded in these videos) is a direct consequence of his crippling debt. he has taken to calling up the banks to belittle all who work there. even banks which he's never used before aren't safe from his wrath. none of those poor workers can escape being called a 'dumb doggie'.
Omg two Charles 💕 To me it happened that a cashier says that we went to the same high school and it’s weird because her face looks familiar to me because she looks like one of my friends, but from high school i don’t remember her at all 🤔 and yeah I like to go one hour before closing because it seems that people take their whole family as if it were going to the park or something 🙄
After Dark is my favorite Murakami, but I do have a thing for books about sleep. Omg, Anne Tyler was a queen decades before Elizabeth Strout held a crayon! Yes, Anne Tyler's books are about the minutia of life -- all so beautifully observed, and her books all double as love letters to Baltimore. After a lifetime of writing, it's a glorious body of work dedicated to her city and human nature. Try Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant or Celestial Navigation; my two favorites of hers.
