Hundreds of thousands of manuscripts that explain human history and culture are at risk of being permanently lost because of neglect, war, theft and disasters. The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML), one of the world's leading cultural preservation institutions, digitizes the handwritten stories of ancient civilizations in many of the world's most dangerous and inaccessible locations. As it nears five decades of work, HMML has photographed some 120,000 complete manuscripts, totaling more than 40,000,000 pages. HMMLPreservation will give life to the leadership and manuscripts behind HMML.

Why was it called " the conferences of"??

"Conferences" refers to meetings that Cassian had in Egypt with leaders of the Egyptian monastic community. His wrote his "Conferences" book as a way for readers to listen-in on these meetings.

Why is it a "GLOSSED" Bible "GLOSSED" OR "GLOSS" Means to brush over, become unclear, obscure, a false and often willfully misleading interpretation Why? Why GLOSSED
@visitHMML
@visitHMML Год назад
Thank you for asking. A “gloss” is a commentary or notes on a text (as in the term “glossary” referring to a list of “meanings” of words). The term “glossed bible” refers to the fact that this particular version of the Bible includes an extensive set of commentary surrounding the text (and also between the lines of the text). This particular set of glosses is called the “Glossa Ordinaria” (“ordinary gloss”; en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossa_Ordinaria) because it became the most common collection of earlier commentaries from earlier Church authorities and patristic authors. The Bible is by no means the only book/text that has been glossed in this way. HMML has glossed versions of Canon Law, Ovid, Juvenal, Thomas Aquinas, the Qur’an, the Talmud, etc. A modern equivalent to the “gloss” might be “footnotes” which provide explanatory text at the bottom of the same page. With a gloss, one assumes that the commentary covers the whole page. One manuscript fragment in HMML's collections (w3id.org/vhmml/readingRoom/view/519099) presents the Gospel of Luke written in large letters. The gloss is written in smaller lettering in the right and left margins, as well as “interlinear” (“between-the-lines”) glossing in smaller letters. All of this is given to the reader to aid in the understanding and interpretation of the main text, the Gospel of Luke. This was a common way to study the Bible in the later Middle Ages. The 16th-century reformers largely did away with such glossing, preferring (at least at first) to make the text available directly and with out intermediary interpretation.

Another great and informative episode. Thank you for sharing this valuable knowledge. It is through the work of HMML that I learned about the importance of the Syriac language to the history of knowledge development. I was touched in this episode by the work of Dr. Robin Darling Young who records real voices of people and preserves them for future generation. I’m looking forward to your next episode.
