The BBs add weight to the whip, and you can make a functional whip without them. It’ll just be on the lighter side. You can use either ball chain or paracord with the inner strands. For paracord I would use enough strands to cover the handle and tie them with something like sinew.
I understand that you are probably new or intermediate in the bullwhip world, but using hockey tape in the bullwhip can really screw up some thing in the future with your whip.
In my five years of whip making I’ve never had an issue with it. It may help that I don’t use very much of it either. It’s mostly used as rough surface so that the next layer of braiding has something to hold on to.
Awesome Video! Was wondering where you got your whip and how much it was to see if I can get one like it. Because I was thinking of getting a 10 foot whip, would it work the same as an 8 foot? Again, great tutorial!
Thank you! I made the whip that I’m using in this video. It’s an 8ft. There’s a little difference between an 8ft and a 10ft. The biggest two being how fast they can crack and how many kinds of crack you can preform. With an 8ft, you can do more complex cracking routines, since it is a shorter and lighter whip it can be cracked for longer. However it won’t be as loud as a 10ft would be. 10ft whips are pretty good with continuous flicks and can get pretty loud. But since they are longer it does get harder to do more of the complex tricks.

No it hockey tape. I don’t use electrical tape, it breaks too easy. Later down the line it can cause kinks in the thong of the whip. With hockey tape I don’t have that problem. Since it’s made of a cloth material. It can bend without breaking making it the perfect material for whip making.
I really like your videos. I like the way you explain and show how to correctly use a bullwhip. In your opinion is there good and bad whips for sale out there ? Just very curious because you hear people saying yes . Henry
Thank you very much, it means a lot! There are some bad whips out there, but I think there are more good whipmakers than bad. Most of the bad whips I see are mass produced. Like the ones you see on Amazon. They’re cheap, usually in the $50-$180 range. A lot of beginner whipmakers (who care about the craft) will sell their handmade whips in that price range, and sometimes their stuff is way better. For good whipmakers there are plenty of great ones out there. I think what makes a pro whipmaker is how much they care about their work. These kinds of whips will likely be on the more expensive side, but they’ll last a lot longer than a whip you can find on Amazon.
There's plenty of examples of bad products on Amazon but also plenty of examples of really good ones. Don't go thinking it's one way or another. Treat Amazon, and ANY other place you purchase from with some common sense by doing some research, reading product descriptions carefully and looking at reviews. And be wary of people who generalise, especially on the internet where people profit from exactly that kind of behaviour.
