I find that chemistry is often taught poorly or without a purpose. Because of this, people tend to lose interest and sometimes even start to hate it. In each video that I make, I try to balance theory with purpose. My goal is to capture the natural beauty of chemistry in fun and interesting ways.
In terms of education, I have a BSc in Biochemistry, with a minor in pharmacology. However, I've always been a lot more drawn to applied chemistry. So after finishing my degree, I worked as a lab tech in an organic lab, and then as a chemistry grad student. However, I ended up leaving my graduate studies early to focus on this channel. Now, making chemistry videos has become my full-time job!

old people smell like a mixture of decay (which is a sweetish/repulsive smell), incontinence and, strangely, ponds cold cream (some say that smells like roses or cucumbers)
The phrase “got a penny to their name” and then afterwards as it gets liquidated in acid bath creating toxic clouds and green water that later turns into light blue once poured into water. Certainly makes a interesting by mixing science into a story to tell.
I get that chemists are savvy about what is toxic and what we might be able tolerate injesting in small amounts, for instance, hydrochloric acid. But they still taste stuff without being absolutely sure it is safe. Most of the artificial sweeteners were discovered by accident while working with toxic stuff like coal tar and chlorine, because someone got compounds on their hands and later tasted it on their fingers. Mmmm... sweet!
I worked in a nursing home and an adult daycare. I don’t think it’s so much that elderly people have a “smell” as much as it is that they either a) don’t care as much about hygiene and doing participate in self care as much b) refuse hygiene care when they’re in homes or from family members if they live with them c) can’t take care of their hygiene properly due to mobility issues d) especially in the case of women, once you go through menopause, things start to smell a bit funky down there no matter if you bathe every day or not and that includes the smell of your pee (I know, I went through surgical menopause at 34 and I’m 51 now). I really think it’s more a hygiene issue and a hormonal issue with post menopausal women. Your chemical makeup changes all the time and that’s going to make you smell differently at different ages. Just like newborn babies have that new baby smell… They smell so good and I often think it’s so other women who smell them want to make one themselves. It would actually be an interesting experiment to see what the chemical makeup of people is at various ages is and why it would attract or repel.
