Just move the number over so it IS equal to 0. So if you had x^2 + 4x = -3, rewrite to be x^2 + 4x + 3 = 0. When factoring, you always want to start with = to zero.

I was having serious problems with this and my teacher is a total idiot, she doesnt teach, and I'm so glad I found someone on youtube explaining this because I'm having a quiz on this method tomorrow. I love the box method of factoring and teach it, but was a little shaky on how to handle a quadratic term w/ a coefficient > 1. I think that you really helped me to figure out how to teach it a lot better. Thanks.
