Love this! You explain it all so well. Wish you would do more with Pan Pastels. I can't decide if I am going to give mine away or add more colors hoping to get better results!! Any thoughts??
@mariannekeller7504 I'd go with a combination of the Zorn palette, 6 colors i belive and you may have some or all and a good blue and yellow which you may also have. You can make many colors with that handful of pan pastels. I think I had over 60 before I realized that. If you don't want use them now do what I do and pack them away. They won't go bad and when you see a project you want to do in Pan Pastels you have what you. Oh, and I do have 67 videos by me in my Pan Pastel Playlist. I put them away and bring the back sometimes a year at a time .
I know its been a while since you posted this video, but, what paper are you referring to as the wrong paper. I'm about to buy some pan pastels, I've only used soft and hard pastels on Canson Mi Teintes, Strathmore Pastel, Strathmore Toned Grey and Canson Mixed Media paper. Their all textured, some more than others.
The wrong paper to use with pan pastels is Bristol vellum or any paper with minimal tooth. All the other papers you mentioned will work well with Pan Pastels. Any paper you used with soft or chalk pastels are good. My favorite at this point is the canson pastel paper and stonehenge hotpress watercolor paper. Many artists prefer the pastelmat which I used in this video but in the end I found pastel paper and watercolor paper best for me. If you check my channel you'll see othe demos on various papers. I'm sure you'll enjoy them.
Thank you: this was a very helpful introduction to a new medium.. One question: when the painting has dried, is it as ‘fixed’ as watercolour or does it have the vulnerability to smudging of soft pastel and oil pastel?
Hi, I am just about to watch your video in full, but noticed you wondered what the stickers were fore. There is a sticker for each of the products that come in the red tin. Each tin is identical, and so if you look closely at the stickers you may notice a pencil shape with Neocolor II on it. Attach that to the outside of your tin. It is transparent, so all you see is an inoffensive white outline against the red. I have Neocolor I as well as II, and so each tin is identical, so the sticker is very helpful indeed. I can just imagine myself going insane constantly opening the wrong tin. Hope that was helpful to anyone else who also wondered at their purpose? Best wishes from Scotland.
@@JoanMansson I thought your video was utterly perfect. It is rare for an artist to use something for the first time and release a video about your learning curve. The results were beautiful, despite your not yet having fully mastered the medium. I can well imagine, that 1 year on from this video, you are ably showing your mastery.
I have a three pack of their primary colors because it wasn’t selling at my local hobby shop and they reduced it to like almost 80% off. I’ve never tried these in my life. I’m using them today in my mixed media journal and now I’m checking out how others use it too.
You can use watercolor brushes with gouache but if you're a watercolor artist I wouldn't use any natural brushes like sable for both mediums. More precision is needed for watercolor and gouache is harder to wash out of brushes than is watercolor. If you're shopping for brushes soft synthetics are good. Brushes that are marked as mixed media. Watercolors as I said are good. I like to use soft synthetic brushes both watercolor and acrylic.
@@JoanMansson for watercolor I’m using the Princeton - Neptune line, which is synthetic. If you haven’t tried them, you totally should! I’m certain you’d love them! I have a couple mix media brushes so I’ll give them a try with gouache. Thank you so much for your advice! Hugs from Guatemala! 🇬🇹 ❤️
I used use these pastels a few years ago and loved them I have recently just returned to drawing/ painting… and using them again, I love them, and Derwent Inktense blocks I enjoyed watching you It looks like your fearless self discovery is teaching yourself something new, I loved you sharing your observations as you progressed discovering things about this medium and gaining insight about this medium …. I have been doing both, doing artwork myself, and learning from others … I just thought I would bring to your attention, by sharing with you, a couple of other artists who are using these crayons I watched these today I saw another demonstration of how to use this medium and the advice there was: use very small amounts of water, and build up colour with blending, and intensity by over layering….the program was by The Frugal Crafter Lindsay Weirich called “Why don’t I use these more?” Using Caran D’Ache Neocolour 11 (2) Twisted Art Designs 12 Neocolour 11 (2) Caran D’Ache Pastel Technique Wishing you happy painting and the joy of it
