Welcome to Hyperion Records, an independent British classical label devoted to presenting high-quality recordings of music of all styles and from all periods from the twelfth century to the twenty-first.
Founded in 1980, Hyperion has been described as 'Britain’s brightest record label'. It is named after an altogether splendid figure from Greek mythology. The catalogue currently comprises more than 2500 albums and approximately 60 new titles are issued each year. Acclaimed artists include Angela Hewitt, Marc-Andre Hamelin, Gerald Finley, Steven Isserlis, Stephen Hough, Alina Ibragimova, Emma Kirkby, the Nash Ensemble and Piers Lane and the Goldner String Quartet.
"This is a fine recording and an animated performance from the BBC Scottish Symphony. The strings sound very rich, and the recording is realistic without over accenting instruments. It represents my ideal of how an orchestra should be recorded, and it is particularly nice when the musical program is nicely put together, the musicians are playing at their peak, and the recording is done to the best practices of the day. Recommended for Walton lovers and those who want to dip their toes into Walton’s music for the first time." (Mel Martin, Audiophile Audition)
The present version of 'Aux langueurs d'Apollon' (Extract from Platée) interpreted by the magnificient Carolyn Sampson was featured in the Soundtrack Playlist from movie Marie Antoinette (2006) by Sofia Coppola.
'Anthony Marwood's un-flashy individualism seems to be operating at an opposite pole to the Heifetz way, and generates memorable results of its own. While Marwood has all the virtuosity that the music demands, nothing is rushed' (Malcolm Hayes, BBC Music Magazine)
'Proceedings are launched in fine style with a supremely affectionate and agreeably lithe account of the immensely personable concerto that Walton conceived for the great Jascha Heifetz. Anthony Marwood proves an enviably secure and articulate soloist' (Andrew Achenbach, Gramophone)
'Releases such as this demonstrate the continuing validity of the gramophone as an artistic medium: otherwise we could wait for ever before hearing this eminently worthwhile music. Profound thanks are due to the commitment of record companies such as Hyperion, for subventing such a magnificently-performed and finely-recorded disc as this' Reviewed by Robert Matthew-Walker for Classical Source www.classicalsource.com/db_control/db_cd_review.php?id=14610
'clever and full-blooded' ★★★★ Stephen Pritchard for The Observer www.theguardian.com/music/2017/may/28/stanford-preludes-cd-review-sam-haywood-hyperion

The allegro of No 16 (B flat major) sparkles in their mercurial hands-but they reserve their finest playing for No 23 (D major) and Mozart’s last sonata for this combination in F, No 36' (The Sunday Times)
'This well established duo, consisting of two quite exceptional players, continue their journey through Mozart’s Violin Sonatas … the Tiberghien/Ibragimova duo play with typical understanding' (Classic FM)
'Each of the six works in this … programme is a pure delight, with exquisite playing from these world-class performers-Ibragimova fleet and lithe, Tiberghien playfully delicate' (The Observer)
'Turn to the enchanting final sonata in F K547, composed as a sunny relaxation away form the labours of the last three symphonies, and it is difficult to imagine this wonderful score more exquisitely played or radiantly engineered' (BBC Music Magazine)
'Tiberghien, with his crystalline sonorities and pinpoint clarity of articulation, and Ibragimova gleefully savour their jousting dialogues and rapid role-reversals in the fast movements … Tiberghien and Ibragimova come close to my ideal Mozartian duo, in performances that further whet the appetite for the rest of the series' (Gramophone)
'This is a reasoned assessment, at times a serious analysis, of a work of music that dances on the very cliff-edge of sanity. Buratto, wise beyond his years, is definitely a talent to watch' (Musical Toronto, Canada)
'Czerny charms rather than challenges-don't expect to be bowled over by this prolific Austrian composer's daring and invention here. That said, there's nothing wrong with a little good humour, especially when the concertos are so immaculately performed' (BBC Music Magazine)
'Howard Shelley and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra are, by now, firm friends, and it’s thanks to his intimacy with every note of the orchestral score, as well as that of the piano part, that makes these readings so rewarding' (Gramophone)

The disk is out to be joined by a second disk of Scarlatti. I had the great privilege to hear play many of these sonatas in a live recital recently and she autographed my disk. What is better than this! As long as she continues to release music, we should be grateful to rejoice in her art.
This is such a masterful presentation of this great work. This work that will touch you deeply. Angela has the artistic majesty to reveal all the sublime aural details. This must not be missed!
Angela is a grand master of French piano repertoire. Her formidable technique is the means to allow her to play this exquisite music with verve and poetic majesty. Her graceful touch and adroit judgment allows her to capture all the beauty in this music. Debussy once said, "Music should seek humbly to please - that is all". Ms. Hewitt far exceeds that mark. Get a copy - you won't regret it!
We are blessed to live in the epoch of such glorious music making by one of the superlative exponents of this art. Ms. Hewitt deserves our adulation for her great sacrifices she has made to enrich our lives. Words alone cannot do enough justice for all the joy she has brought into our lives. It is sufficient just to light a candle at her shrine and be grateful she is here with us to share her artistic genius. Our deep thanks goes out to you Angela. Thanks for all the music!
Northern Lights is the title of the album - as it is the name for track 5. You can have a look in the information below the sampler for more details about the tracks if you wish.
Well, you could be right in the sense the music does sound very Brahmsian but the following score confirms it is Dohnanyi. ks.petruccimusiclibrary.org/files/imglnks/usimg/9/97/IMSLP72135-PMLP144597-Dohnanyi_-_Klavierst__cke_Op_2_.pdf
'We are lucky to have the Binchois Consort-here, two altos, four tenors-to bring this haunting, often jubilant early English repertoire to full-blooded life' Fiona Maddocks for the Observer www.theguardian.com/music/2017/mar/26/music-for-the-100-years-war-review-binchois-consort-andrew-kirkman
'The London Haydn Quartet revel in their brilliance and originality' ★★★★ Review by Richard Fairman for the Financial Times www.ft.com/content/fba56aa2-ec09-11e6-ba01-119a44939bb6
★★★★ Performance, ★★★★ Recording (Geoff Brown, BBC Music Magazine) 'This recording widens our horizons, revealing the thoughtful, technically brilliant and cosmopolitan musician that Benjamin’s friends and students in London, Canada and his native Australia always knew him to be … whether playing his viola or violin, Lawrence Power is in total sympathy with Benjamin’s shifting moods, and Simon Crawford-Phillips proves a lithe and responsive piano partner. A bouncy recording and excellent inlay notes offer more inducements for listeners to discover that the Jamaican Rumba man, composer of five operas and a powerful symphony, was far from a one-trick pony'
