How hard is it to get back into the US? I'm planning on going over next month for dental work but don't have a passport (I just have an old expired passport from 30 years ago)... I can apply for one now but it will just take too long to get one (I'm its told going to be 2-4 months)... I have read on the internet that a notarized birth certificate and a valid driver's license would be adequate to get me back into the US after dental treatment... is that just a rumor? What proof of citizenship short of a passport would get be back to the US? Thanks

@@whatclinic Thank you for the reply. I just found out that I can get an Enhanced Driver's License (called an EDL) from Michigan (not all states offer them). I applied yesterday at my Secretary of State's office and it will take 2 weeks for me to receive it in the mail. This EDL allows me passage into Canada and Mexico through any border crossing without need for a passport or any other ID necessary. (However it does not allow one to fly into either country.)
@@tonyt8805 I had read that somewhere online too however on the official gov website it states you are required to show a passport and thus was my confusion. That was the reason I've been asking the question all over the internet and getting back many different "unofficial" answers... furthering my confusion. As I stated above, I had since found out that you can also legally travel to Mexico, Canada, and several Caribbean destinations with just an Enhanced Driver's License, however this only applies to border crossings by land or sea... and NOT by Air. The best par is its way cheaper and much faster to get one... the one big problem is only 5 states so far offer an EDL.
This is not the place to ask about how to get in or out to the US. You need to call or check the website of home land security Department or The State department.
