I personally am not a fan of such books - it has a rather western flavour to it, which isn't what I look out for when wanting to read outside the western canon. Such books, like immigrant fiction, tend to follow the western narrative arc and, to me, it feels much less authentic that way tone-wise.
@BrownBooktuber
@BrownBooktuber 16 дней назад
I understand that perspective. I think I see it as different to writings from other countries, like I don’t apply this to Roy because she wrote in India about India, but books by the diaspora I’d say are a different genre. Yes there’s the western perspective on what they talk about but I think also that is something those of us in the diaspora can recognise for good or bad. But I get it not being everyone’s cup of tea

I know how prevalent covert racism is in this country because I meet the covert racists all the time. The cruelty of nature has left me looking like the stereotype of the tail end of a Britain First march. I've lost count of the times I've been waiting for a bus or a train when some random stranger has tried to strike up a conversation with the same opening line of " I'm not being funny mate but" followed by a tirade about a minority group. I worry about how I appear to other people particularly people from minority communities, do I make them uncomfortable, do I scare them. I saw the rise of the far right in the 70's, I fought them in the 80's and thought we'd have gown out of all that stupidity, I'm so disappointed because I really thought things would have been better by now.

Me Again 😅 The main UK Indie publishers I tend to look at for translated works from different places (I sign up for email newsletters and buy on offer because money is annoying and limited): - Tilted Axis Press (massive rec for Violent Phenomena an essay collection about translation), - Charco Press (good for South American works), - Peirene Press, - Strangers Press, - Saqi Books, - Sinoist Books (I have been eyeing this one up not yet ordered or read anything from them), * my specific book recs list in reply 😊and would love any other publisher recs?

- Solo Dance, Li Kotomi, Arthur Reiji Morris (Translator) (people aren't fans of this whilst I understand the critiques I feel differently and this is one of my all time favourites), - Fang Si-Chi's First Love Paradise, Lin Yi-Han, Jenna Tang (Translator) - Almond, Won-Pyun Sohn, Joosun Lee (Translator) - Shoko's Smile, Choi Eunyoung, Sung Ryu (Translator) - Idol, Burning, Rin Usami, Asa Yoneda (Translator) - Twenty Fragments of a Ravenous Youth, Xiaolu Guo (I believe this book is translated but the authors later works are now written in English, but don't quote me), - Is Mother Dead, Vigdis Hjorth, Charlotte Barslund (Translator) - Tender Is the Flesh, Agustina Bazterrica, Sarah Moses (Translator) - All The Lovers In The Night, Mieko Kawakami, Sam Bett (Translator), David Boyd (Translator) - I Who Have Never Known Men, Jacqueline Harpman, Ros Schwartz (Translator) - Why I No Longer Write Poems, Diana Anphimiadi, Natalia Bukia-Peters (Translator), Jean Sprackland (Translator) - Boulder, Eva Baltasar, Julia Sanches (Translator) - Seven Empty Houses, Samanta Schweblin, Megan McDowell (Translator) Nonfics - How to be Fascist, Michela Murgia, Alex Valente (Translator) - Woman Life Freedom, edited by Malu Halasa - A Decolonial Feminism, Françoise Vergès, Ashley J. Bohrer (Translator) - Separate and Dominate: Feminism and Racism after the War on Terror, Christine Delphy, David Broder (Translator) Definitely need to read more and vary from where I am reading, but I stuck to only the books I have read and given high 4 or 5 stars. *listed author name order as per their English book covers, to help finding them.

@BrownBooktuber No worries I hope at least one of the suggestions you like the look of/end up enjoying 🤞. I've only recently been doing the keeping an eye on publishers thing tbf. Sorry if you already know but in case you dont. You might be interested in keeping an eye on the publishers verso and pluto, the wrong video for this comment but dependant on political events they will temporarily make an ebook free to download or heavily discount a relevant reading list. I was able to get a fair few nonfic eBooks related to Palestine for free last year, and the BNP book you mentioned was heavily discounted (not started this yet). Oh and if you choose to read Solo Dance I may skip the review just in case you hate it 😅.

worry about yourself and your own country rather than getting offended on behalf of us ( the not angry, decent, white English people). Guarantee you didn't watch the video, you got mad at a book title in a thumbnail that Sully didn't even write. Take some introspection and think on why this was your immediate reaction. The topic of discussion is clearly on far right white nationalism/ extremism, yet your immediate response is to ignore the discussion at hand and instead say "what about violent brown people" to an Asian man. Why was this your reaction?

I saw some family at a funeral the other day (not related to the riots) and its insane how much more racist they are now. Theres always been prejudice but now they get angry seeing a black guy walking to the shop. Apparently hes walking around like its his country not ours. The asylum seekers? Compared to the nazis and people ask why we stopped the nazis but we cant stop some dinghys while implying (and sometimes just saying) that they should be shot. It scares me how unempathetic my own family can be towards people who look different to them. I cant even imagine having to be scared to go outside because your skin is darker. They want to make Britain great again while actively showing the worst and most disgusting aspects of Britain.

Hey there. Your video got recommend to me on my FYP. It was heartbreaking to hear you talk about how you struggle with finding a response within yourself to the violence and hatred that is on display these days. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be a person of color living in the UK right now, and I feel so much sadness for you. I don’t know if it’s because you wanted to steer clear of the YT algorithm, or if it’s for reasons of conviction, but I noticed you didn’t describe the current aggressors as f4scists. Personally I absolutely think we should. It’s accurate, it adds to the urgency of the debate, and it changes how and with what information we look at the situation. With this in mind, I can personally also recommend The Alt Right Playbook, a YT series by Innuendo studios, in case you haven’t watched it. And I find lots of Three Arrows videos to be incredible pertinent to the debate. Lastly, I don’t think it was ever weird for little Sully to adore Malcolm X. Freedom and justice are struggles that entice all of the working class all over the world. I share your sadness and anger and will never stop fighting our oppressors and their foot soldiers.

If you are white and grew up with money, it is almost a certainty you know a 2nd/3rd gen British Pakistani who went to medical/law/dental school. Or you're neighbours with someone who did. If you grew up in a dog shit council estate in rotherham you know what's going on with them tinted BMWs parked outside the care homes.. Different social classes have VASTLY different experiences of Multicultural Britain. whether you choose to except that or not is up to you.

We don't have to be better, we already are, because we care for one and other. Moments like these, it was the case for me in France, we desperately need community.
