This song haunts me, and specifically this version. I even had a car accident once because I was so wrapped up in listening to it 😂 It doesn’t stop me from loving the song, I always will. Just can’t explain why 🥲 Edit: Nobody was hurt except for 2 cars meh $ 👍
Paul Leroy Robeson was an American bass-baritone concert artist, actor, professional football player, and activist who became famous both for his cultural accomplishments and for his political stances.
Always admired him, not just his voice but his humanity. I am not Welsh, but I know the Welsh have never forgotten his kindness to them when they needed it. A big man, a proud man speaking the truth. RIP.
Such a pity that so many consider despots & tyrants to be heroes. Those with hands dripping in the blood of those they claimed to have 'liberated ', soon become the new tyrants. John, you 'liberated yourself RIP.
Saw him live. The McCarthyites took away his big concerts. He went from 300,000 a year to 7 thousand a year. In about 1958 he performed at assembly at Eastview Jr High. I was in the eighth grade. This giant black man walks on stage and started singing like he was trying to blow the back doors open. It was incredible. He sang under an assumed name. But I knew exactly who he was as my parents had several LP records of his and listened to them a lot. I kept my mouth shut for fear that an army of right wing freaks would arrest him as had happened in the past. But my lord what a performance. This is the greatest base baritone in history.
Oh sheanadoe, I long to hear you rolling river, cross the wild Misson, its 7 seven long years since I last I seen you, I long to hear you rolling you, away bound to go go cross the wild missorie
Hope indeed, as the last person said. I remember hearing this voice and seeing this person on the television at my grandparent's home as a kid...back then it just seemed natural to hear this old harmony...it was just a television show with maybe TV Land or something....but I heard this guy sing Old Man River.....Now as I am a bit older; I understand how honest his voice is!
