If you're a fashion designer who's sick of your career being stuck in the hands of toxic corporate bosses 😢...
I've been there.
I went from hating my low-paying toxic fashion job to having freedom as freelancer. 💸
And I can teach you to do it, too.
If you want to work with fashion brands you love (instead of mass production companies) AND work from home with flexibility in your day… 🙌
You get there by becoming a REAL freelancer, in control of your own business (not an exploited temp worker with no benefits).
As a REAL freelancer, you can work for yourself on exciting projects and earn steady income. 💥
In my decade+ of freelancing in fashion...
💕 I got to work with brands I was passionate about and escape the rat race. ✈️ I had the freedom to travel and work wherever I wanted. 💰 And I earned over $100k, way more than I needed to pay the bills.
I’ve taught thousands of people how to freelance in fashion.
Hello! You would have to draft a pattern yourself. NewArc will create photorealistic renders as I showed in the video, but it does not create sewing patterns. Is that what you were asking?
Nowhere near involved in the fashion industry (and also very late to the party), but I've been looking at Clo3D tutorials just for fun-and binging your channel-and came across Style3D Studio; the RU-vid algorithm's at work. It's very similar to Clo3D, so I think it's worth checking out for those familiar with Clo3D. From what I've seen in some comments and sites, Clo3D has more features, but Style3D is better at simulation and has a free library fully integrated into the software. According to their site, not only is there a 30-day trial, but there's also a FREE non-commercial version-remember NON-commercial. Apparently, it used to be $30/month, but the non-commercial version is now completely free with a few limitations-don't know if that'll always be the case, but that's what it's like at the time I'm writing this. The Individual plan is also less expensive than Clo3D at $40/month and $380/year, but you might want to keep in mind that Clo3D has more features than Style3D, at least according to what I've heard through word-of-mouth (word-of-comment?). It's still relatively new, but I just thought I'd share this in case anyone missed it or is interested. I can't say anything definitive since I use neither of these programs, but some videos and sites compare the two if you wanna check that out, and you can check the software out too.
Thank you for sharing! I enjoy fashion as a passion but not a business. To each his own. I give people a lot of credit for pursuing business in fashion.
😭😭😭I finished my AS in Fashion Merchandise and Management with the highest GPA. Not even one job offer, I was too old at 30 something. Eventually, I got a job in a complete different field that paid me really good money. Soon I will retire and I planning to open my own fashion business. Finally I will be working on what I’m most excited about, fashion, trends, fabrics 😂.
Thank you so much for sharing your story ❤ I am also a fashion designer (beginner) i'm now trying to find a job in a fashion campany or any related business. The fact is....i need to improve my CAD skills for digital drawings on both illustrations and patterns. I think it is essential
Good to know. I was wondering who it was that predicted that say “denim skirts are hot this season” or “ shirt dresses are a must have for summer”! But mostly I wondered who the genius’ were that brought back my beloved flare and bell bottom jeans from the 70’s! I was a kid then so I couldn’t rock the look like I can today! And fortunately my guy is in a rock band and he also loves the look sooo! But the jeans of today are starting to take on the 80’s high waist mom jeans look! I personally don’t care for high waist jeans anymore after loosing weight. I want to show off a little lol. But it did inspire me to start sewing and make my clothes the way I like them. Good to know the titles of each job. I suddenly feel like I might need to make a change of fortune. 🔮 lol
About the price of Clo3D; psst: an Adobe subscription for an individual is 59.99 a month. I’m not trying to downplay the cost, but considering that it’s a 3D software that can literally help you make, grade, and export sewing patterns, and that your time is also money, I would say worth it. Though personally I’m waiting to see if I hear back from Browswear indie first.
I can’t remember the context and what I said in the video, but if you just get Illustrator, it’s $22.99 a month. Yes, the whole suite is more. And yes, for $50 CLO is quite robust! However, if you compare it to what the whole Adobe suite does - video editing, photoshop, vector, and more, I would say it’s comparable. Just depends on your needs!
Thank you for the tutorial I want to start freelancing service. I am having a doubt. What information should I ask for from my client in order to make a perfect tech pack. Is he going to provide me with sample garment measurements, cost sheet, fabric Type, color code etc?
Hello Sew Haidi.. I m Iqra Sultan, from Pakistan.. Actually I m also a textile designer and recently I jumped into freelancing in start I have clients but now I don't have a client for work or in Pakistan they don't offer high rates.. Can you help in this..
I have never been more impressed by a tutorial and it is absolutely amazing in all categories: Knowledge, VoiceOver, straight to the point, good flow, articulate presentation. Absolutely amazing Exactly what I did to know, and I was so impressed that I watched it for the second time right after just because WOW! Please make more tutorials about illustrator and other graphic software And thank you so much for this experience
Wow, thank you!!! I no longer make Illustrator tutorials, but I have plenty that you can binge 😅 Watch for more new content coming soon about other fashion industry topics!
Thank you! I'm learning so many great features! I used to export every file as jpeg and then import into excel lol, used separate files instead of layers and recolored all shapes manually, but this method is so much faster!
Thank you so much for sharing this talk. Very honest and informative, you guys evidently respect your own’s and each other’s professions, time and dedication. Pleasure to listen to and learn from it
Hey Heidi, great video and editing. I have ai images of models wearing incredible outfits and want to turn them into clothing designs to pass on to a supplier. How do I do that?
Glad you liked the video! To get those designs manufactured, you’d want to properly spec them with a tech pack to call out all the details, construction, fit/sizing, etc. You could use those AI images to *support* your technical specs, but they wouldn’t be enough on their own. This is a great place to start: successfulfashiondesigner.com/tech-pack-step-by-step/ (Or if you’d like to hire a freelancer, I can help you get connected with someone!)
Hey Heidi, thank you for this.. I’ve been to wanting to start my fashion freelancing career outside referral among my small base clients but I have a lot of limitations because I stay in Nigeria. Any tips on what websites that has a flexible payment option or location acceptance? Would love to hear your take on this. Thank you.
Very much so! Some small things have changed, but generally AI is quite stable and these are all base features that are still quite consistent in how they work.
Oh my gosh, I feel like im hearing my story from her LOL! first of all I was watching your other video of "LEAVING THE FASHION INDUSTRY JUST YET" and this came next, and these were all great information! its very eye opening and honestly just made my day. I learned CLO3D last fall of 2022 and have to put that back into practice, I also wanna learn more in depth of Gerber.BTW, I just learned Your coolest way of making a metallic zipper brush! I cant THANK YOU enough Sew Heidi. More power to you and your channel .
i am new to artboards or illustrator but I am using Coreldraw for a decade already. Having a hard time migrating to Illustrator. One thing that I can't appreciate in artboards or maybe I don't know how to use it well, is that what if am using a hundred artboards. each artboard is separate artwork but what if I accidentally move some elements to other artboards. I would be crazy to trace it back since it has a tendency to overlap. In Coreldraw there are pages. You cannot simply drag or accidentally transfer other element because each page is locked, unless you are going to copy/paste the elements to other page. I don't know how to explain it well. pls help
I’m in my final year of my fashion degree and I think that freelancing would be a great option after a graduate as I want to work a flexible job. How do you get into freelancing is there website you can promote you services or do you directly email clients to offer your service?
You will have much more success emailing directly. Check out my free guide for more tips and to learn how to do that: successfulfashiondesigner.com/freelance-fashion-designer-ultimate-guide/
Craaaaaazzzzzzzy😶. Great demo,. Just went over to the website. The pricing isnt bad either. Thumbs up. Anybody gonna make the Leopard Jacket? Let me know where to send the cheque.
So happy I found this video. It is very helpful to understand better the industry. I also think that the best option is 5, to be indepenend freelancer as it also make you feel enterpreneur and I think it is more enriching and empowering experience, but I think before this it is good to gain experience with print studios to learn and gain experience. I love to Karina's story, so inspiring! ❤ thank you for share this video!!👏👏👏
I wouldn’t say easy. Breaking into fashion under any circumstances isn’t easy. Anything is possible, however. I know people and have students who’ve done it. So yes, it is possible.
I can’t believe I’m the first comment… honestly there has to be more videos like this on RU-vid ?! I’m wasn’t exactly working within fashion, I worked in fashion makeup and hair styling. Studied at London college of fashion and got to experience that life at the age of 19/20 and I walked away from the Industry midway though university. truthfully, I had a mental breakdown, I felt Depressed, suicidal overall I HATED my job. Makeup artistry is a great career and you meet SO many amazing people and have opportunities to work at LFW and PFW but my morals got in the way of pursuing makeup. It’s a toxic industry that feeds off you’re insecurity’s and they profit exploiting miners all over the world all in the name of “Beauty” luckily I have high school qualifications from high school and I’m now applying for a civil engineering, bachelors degree so yeah I’m heading in a completely different direction 😂 overall it feels SO good using my skills for a industry that’s more meaningful? and honestly a WAY better pay
OH MY GOD , why did i not find you sooner? Ive been trying to find out how to achieve that gradient effect. THANK YOU for your very informative content. Subscribed.
Thank you! I'm a patternmaker and good sketches to understand what my clietns want is important to save time. This is good for environment as well by not making samples ended up now working. 😊
