Just back from Fairbanks, I could live there but my wife would be miserable. I’ve made some great friends and it truly is an outdoor paradise. I’ll have to settle for vacations there.
Shilling HARD for The Prospector.. yeah they have good gear but they also have the HIGHEST prices for that gear.....if you wanna pay north of $1k for a parka, they have what you need. Fairbanks would be nothing but a wide spot in the road if not for the military presence and the tourism. There is virtually no industry to support the population aside from those two. The oil boom was over 30 years ago. Yes there are small opportunities in Local government and the University but not much. The PFD has been shrinking every year and is on track to be confiscated by the legislature entirely because they will not reign in spending. Sooo what should you NOT do in Fairbanks???.Move here....find somewhere else..you'll be happier and we who live here will also be happier...just sayin'
We don't use our dividends for travel, toys, or "fun". It goes to fuel. It's the best way for us to make sure the funds are allocated. We also hunt and use game meat. I cook 90% of our meals. I love living here, even at 40 Below, but you have to be prepared to really prioritize spending.

Hey @carmenthompson9803! Alaska is definitely worth visiting! The scenery is incredible, and the outdoor adventures are endless. I totally get wanting to explore without making the move. Have you thought about which part you'd like to visit?

It's very difficult to be enthusiastic about buying a house today, when one is selling a home that is financed at 2.25 rate. Then buying at a 6.25-6.50 rate. The new house payment at the higher rate is very depressing.
Yeah @nathanadams8207, I feel you on that! Going from a super low rate like 2.25% to something above 6% makes the decision a lot tougher. The difference in payments can really hit hard. However, we should always remember that the market can shift in the future.

Could you do a comparison video between Fairbanks and Homer? That's what I'm debating now. I'm even open to surrounding areas such as Delta Junction, North Pole and out to Tok or Glennallen. I'm also looking at the surrounding areas around Homer like Anchor Point or even out to Kenai and Soldotna.
We've got a video coming soon that covers just this topic! Not to sound like a jerk, but I would definitely look at the ground first. In my experience, it is often the case that the land available in such large tracts may not be the best for building. You want nice and dry ground, regardless of where it is, and it is best to get a geotechnical survey.

Why didn't you mention any areas actually close to downtown? Like Weeks Field which is walking distance from downtown and actually right next to the Chena River. You should mention on your video that in most of your areas you covered that people will be hauling their own water and heating fuel as that is an actual part of life when you live outside of town in alot of areas. I would like to see people make videos about my town that are actually factual in how its going to be when they get here.
Avoid walking alone any where on south cushman street.Refuse rides from strangers and pay attention to the drunk drivers in general. My girlfriend likes fairbanks and stays home at night just to be safe.Peace sept 2024 AK
Are there any towns near Fairbanks that don't have property tax or has low property tax? I know about Tok, Glennallen and Delta Junction. I've been doing my research and hope to move to Alaska soon. I've been looking around Fairbanks, North Pole, Nenana, Anderson etc. I'm in Central Maine and taxes here are ridiculous.
Hey @davidgrant2772, it's great to hear you're looking into moving to Alaska! Tok, Glennallen, and Delta Junction are good options to consider. While property taxes can vary, I'll have to check with local offices for the most current info on tax rates. Best of luck with your move and research hope you find the perfect spot!
@@DiscoverFairbanks I've been debating whether or not, I want to love up there around Fairbabmnks or down around Homer. Some people I've talked to said Homer. But based on my research, I think around Fairbanks would be nice. I'm hoping to come up for a few weeks before moving. But I will definitely move to Alaska either way. Just in doing research, I can tell Alaska is the better option than staying here.
Are there housing options in Fairbanks for folks that have jobs out in the bush that they rotate on and off? Basically a cheap rental for for folks that are only there for a couple weeks at a time and then back to some camp job? I’m looking at a job in a man camp and would be on a 4 week on 2 week off schedule so I’m trying to research options a d costs before making a decision.
Hey @FallofftheMap, there are definitely some housing options in Fairbanks that could work for a rotating schedule like yours. You might want to look into short-term rentals or even temporary housing services in the area. Checking local listings and reaching out to property managers in Fairbanks could give you a better idea of what's available and affordable for your situation. Good luck with your job search and move!
Yes washington has an amazing amount of places to go outdoors, the problem is it's so crowded here you have to make reservations to go to alot of those places
In my opinion. Major difference. Washington-more people, more traffic, more violence, more jobs and more things to do. Alaska-Anchorage( I lived in Anchorage for six years)- everything is limited but I like less people, traffic and a lower crime rate. I’m living in Tacoma now but probably move back to Anchorage.

There’s definitely some demand for IT workers in Fairbanks, but it’s not huge like in bigger cities. Most IT jobs there are tied to places like the University of Alaska, hospitals, government offices, or the military. You could find work in areas like network admin, cybersecurity, or tech support. What kind of IT work are you thinking about?
The police in Fairbanks, Alaska, are pretty focused on the community and try to stay connected with the locals. It’s a smaller department since the city has about 30,000 people, so they deal with things like extreme weather, wildlife, and the usual small-town issues like substance abuse, domestic violence, and property crimes. They work closely with other agencies and the community to handle these problems. Hope I answer your question @Apersonwho521
The HVAC job market in Fairbanks is pretty solid, thanks to the extreme weather up there. With the long, cold winters and warm summers, there's always a need for heating and cooling, so HVAC techs stay busy all year.
"Fahrenheit be Damned" - get outside in the winter while the sun is out and walk for 10-15 minutes. Longer if possible. Being outside when the sun is out is very beneficial. Fairbanks has lots of outdoor enthusiasts. Poeple ride "Fat Tire" bicycles for fun at minus -30F. I have Moose and red fox in my yard almost every day. Leave them alone, especially when they have young ones. Moose can be Asshats at times. And he is correct about house construction. My place is a double wall - with 30 inch insulation in the walls. Lived in Fairbanks for 50 years now and love every minute. @annanelson6830 is very correct.

Unfortunately the ferry system is no longer an option. They are no longer sailing across the Gulf of Alaska from Whittier to southeast. If coming up from Washington now, the closest one can get is Skagway or Haines. Then one would have to drive from there, clip a corner of Canada before re-entering Alaska so all of the restrictions of driving through Canada still apply.
Anyone who moves here needs to know what they are getting into before they move here if you don’t know anything about the out doors don’t come here We go through about 4000$ of heating oil for the house and the garage every year

@@DiscoverFairbanks I retired and moved here 12 yeas ago. One of the most interesting things I came across when looking for a home was the information provided by a professor at UAF on permafrost. The information he provided on permafrost and drill-logs played a significant part in my land purchases. I've not seen a permafrost video of any detail integrated into a real estate video. That's all.
I'm going into aviation, specifically aviation maintenance, and I've been looking at Alaska for work. I live in rural Georgia now and I've heard from multiple professionals at my school that Alaska has really good opportunities in the Aviation industry. And since looking into it I've found several companies in Fairabanks with open positions in aviation maintenance
@DiscoverFairbanks I still have some time before I'm finishes with my training and have my necessary certifications to go into work so I'm not currently in the process of relocating but I have been very strongly considering a move in the instance that I am able to secure work in the area.
