Two reasons, if it floats it creates surface movement and fussy fish will see it, second when under the surface it doesn't show too much sheen off the line as it's been treated with mud and makes the flies sit up nicely. To be good at dry fly fishing there are 2 main rules, keep the tippet treated with mud and the fly treated with gink or floatant constantly that way you catch more fish.
Some crackers there. bars of Silver to get the heart rate going. Think i recognize the spot too as I think i seen you around the place during my fishing(cork) You got them in fast , I had a 3 pounder last night and he rang rings around me on a four weight rod. I dont like doing it but I might have to use a 7 wt as a few nice ones around this year and couldnt risk loosing them Savage footage for night time. All my videos turn out terrible
Thanks Barry but you should have seen the amount of trout moving on mayfly and don't remind me about the ones we lost. Will have a second video up soon not many trout due to very blustery conditions but a big one on dries. Tight lines.
That's a pity Vincent it's a great day out. Did another session last week didn't have the quantity but had trout to 5lb on dries, video will be up soon. Tight lines.
Hello Paul. I am a 12 year old angler and fish inniscarra sometimes. Do you have any tips for salmon spinning. And what gear should I use rod, reel, line etc. thanks
Check out my salmon spinning set up on this channel everything you need to have for successful salmon fishing is there, there's even a short version as well with my spinner set ups for different water height. Tight lines and if you need more help just text.
Great video and super helpful! I had the right setup but wanted that confirmation which is hard to find online with so much varying articles out there. I do have one question however. For the sea bass in Holland I tie the lines together instead of using a swivel. Would you always use a swivel to connect the fluro and braid when spinning for Salmon?
Yes it's very important because there's alot of moving parts on the flying c's that I fish so the swivels especially the bigger chrome swivel takes out the kinks otherwise it'll be birds nests all day. Braid can tangle very easy so using the chrome swivel and long casting every 8 or 10 casts reeling under tension helps stop the vast majority of tangles.
Spiders can be fished upstream like dry fly, across and down following with the rod oliver Edwards style but also wet fly style casting 45 degrees across and slow figure of eight retrieve rod high especially on seams the takes are very aggressive but high sticking allows the rod to take the shock rather than ping off trout, figure of eight retrieve keeps you in contact with the flies at all times.
Hi Paul , I'm looking to go fishing in killarney tomorrow. I'm coming from Cork. Have ya got any recommendations? I'll pay the permit strictly, catch and release more, so for photos and the journey going down , cheers dave .
Sorry Dave missed the text, just to keep upto date on my fishing reports etc go to my MrKingfisher3 Facebook page all the upto date information is there plus yesterdays opening day Salmon fishing reports on the laune.. Tight lines.
Probably better to use a switch fly rod set up, I have a video for that as well on my channel. I only use my big 9wt 13.9ft scandi rod for early season big water but after April change over to my 10ft 7wt switch as it can cover everything else..
Still at it Lawrence where I met you, loads of small fish but with the odd double thrown... Still looking for new ground as most areas are heavily fished now. Tight lines.
Hey Paul, great video and really informative. Quick question, if you are using a a full sinking shooting lead like a intermediate, sink 3 or sink 5, what leader set up would you use? Richie
Any tippet on a sinking line has to be 3ft because if its any longer it's not staying down at the depth you want to achieve, now if you want the fly higher up then go with a longer leader. If I'm using anything deeper than 2ins per second sink polyleader /versileader etc then it's 3ft 20lb trilene or 15lb G3 fluorocarbon because if I want to go deeper again I'll swap the fly for a small bullet tube and I'll need the stronger fluorocarbon for turnover of the tube. Tight lines. Don't forget to sub.
Firstly thanks for the sub, it was just above normal high water but the 3 sills were open so it wasn't the height but speed it was moving. Size 4 flying c normally is perfect for the dam at high water but sometimes they push more water through so to hold bottom a size 5 blade is needed.
Hi Paul, great tips. I fish a spate river and I am never 100% sure what size of fly to use as the water level changes ever so slightly. I normally fish a 12 in low water and mostly a 10 in most other conditions unless its very high I will use a tube. Also is it a good or bad idea to chop and change flies from dull patterns to bright patterns or is there a rule of thumb I should follow depending on the conditions? Thanks
That's an easy answer, fish your most productive pattern in size 14 or 15 in low water then maybe 10 in higher coloured water also the tube is good for high water but I'll let you into a secret I fish 15 all the time just brighter in early season dulling down in late season or very low water / old fish. Tight lines don't forget to sub.
Your respect and concern for these magnificent fish and your practice of catch and release, fills me with hope for the future of our sport! Thank you 🙏🏻🎣🙏🏻🎣
Firstly thanks for subscribing as I'm only answering subscriber comments and secondly for the nice comments. Hopefully anglers watching my videos will respect the future of their sport and release most of their catch to ensure that the new generation of anglers enjoy it like we did.
I keep saying to people put in the hard days, start of season, wet, cold, windy, floods etc it's all practice for the good days as it improves your understanding of the river, casting, approach to flies and techniques but most of all how precious catching and releasing a spring salmon is. Tight lines.
Hi there, I only started looking at your channel yesterday evening. I have a question it's not on the fly with lures. Would you use on the river if the river is down only rason I am asking is I don't fly fish for salmon I am going for my 1st time this year
It usually picks up around mid February onwards but the Flesk river holds fish as they just run through the Laune up the lake and enter the Flesk and it can be good in January.
