HI! I'm Joe Luegers: music teacher, published author, and RU-vid channel description writer. My channel features step-by-step videos on musical ear training, as well as resources for music teachers of all levels. CONTACT: joe@luegerswriter.com
Man I love your videos but I really suck at this, as I always had a bad ear for music I think that's why I gave it up years ago but started again. I'm having trouble with tritone and major 7th and 6th. Major seven sounds like an octive and tritone sounds like either major 6th or 7th I cannot differentiate. Did a tone deaf test, checked ok. Don't know why my ears are so bad 😞
There were progressions not started from the 1, so if you’re not giving the tonic before you start the progression, how should I know the reference of the degree?
That’s a great question. I realized this and started including a reference tonic in the 2nd video of this series. To be fair though, you don’t get that with real music and things can sound a little ambiguous until you’ve heard the progression repeated a few times. I listen to the intervals between the root notes and use that to narrow down which one has to be the tonic if we are analyzing things in a traditional major key.
I’m just getting started with your videos and I LOVE your humor!!! Thanks so much for making this fun and enjoyable! Other videos are as boring as waiting in the DMV 😂
Absolutely agree! 🎵 Ear training is so crucial, and it's often overlooked in favor of music theory. This video is a fantastic resource to help shift that focus! These exercises are perfect for developing a strong musical ear. Thanks for sharing this valuable insight! 🙌
This is such a valuable asset to my hands-on the keyboard and guitar. I can listen to you while I’m doing the necessary housework (dishes, meals, laundry, even to get the tones into my subconscious. Thank you!
The Mary Had a Little Lamb trick is really helpful! I figure if I try to sing it over a diminished chord and it sounds like an Amy Lee rendition then it can't be augmented lol
I really appreciate your videos. I've been searching more than 100 videos on youtube, but I have to admit your chanel is the best. If you have time, please make more videos about chord progression and melodic dictation.
@@joeluegersmusicacademy What would help me is a video of Minor key chord progressions and chord progressions using different timbral qualities because it's harder to identify chords of a real song than just on piano
I was previously a music theory nerd in college, but 7 yrs later I felt like I’ve lost it all. Turns out I haven’t, just needed the right tips - so thanks, these vids are fkn phenomenal
Please never change. Love this craft and your personality. This is the most fun I’ve had in the past few year rediscovering that I’m not a shame and my degree was a fluke. A man practicing without and with my headphones is so great. Please find $20 today.
Hi, thank you for making this video and share it for free. It is very useful and help me alot. If you have time, please make more videos about chord progression like this.
Thank you for the videos, I have always wanna learn music, I read my roommate's music theory books, watched a lot of RU-vid videos, taught myself music, and have always wanna train my ear to become a better musician, I love your videos, thank you.
I love how your photos go from plucky freshman to postgraduate student on the verge of twink death. 😂 I love this channel. If I may ask if not being rude: 1. Will you ever do cadences like Phrygian half cadence, plagal, authentic, and so on. 2. Book references. School and professional leisure books for personal and professional extra credit.
Happy to help! I do have a video exercise on cadences: Cadences - Hands-Free Ear Training 26 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DFBmOohd9Rs.html As far as books go, one of these days I need to make a comprehensive list. I first learned out of the Master Theory workbooks back in high school. www.amazon.com/Kjos-Master-Theory-Books-book/dp/B002N3418O/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?crid=5VXRUFSXJGG3&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9._yMSa3E-Rge4cS-w72CFg9Vy68lHv0O2wAYxGk3fPOFsPlP3v5QcoSbmTb7JUZ_Mj9zTV5rPPjTc2QdctD8Nrm0neD6Lzlh2oCSr8FQlAT-9OuWkVWtTR5hlnk8ycsg6ckIdiu6mcNLwf9IDKtJGmyHRTjhJ9so2eDFs46UcRl7MYRzErX5Qn4jiTN4YtRYX0JuhZzEcVcnaIi8oQELyRg.B0u4WktDjqOfAnQYs9-n_7JKm0ujuqBfLJ-c_AAhRaY&dib_tag=se&keywords=master+theory&qid=1726665101&sprefix=master+theory%2Caps%2C112&sr=8-4 There are also a bunch of audiobooks on Audible by Robert Greenburg that are basically 20-40 hour college lectures.
Thank you so much for this incredible series of ear-training exercises! 🎶 The progressive levels make it so much easier to understand and differentiate between various chords. Such a fantastic resource! Keep up the amazing work! 🙌
Piano is so percussive that I wanted something sustained to clarify the chord quality. As a bonus, I get to see comments every day for the last two years asking to take away the strings, lol. I stopped using strings after this video. The message was loud and clear (just like those strings).
God I hate ear training. No wonder I avoided it for so long. Oh well I’m gonna go thru lesson one every day till I get ay least 90%. I’m getting like 20-30 now lol. Garbage lol
I have a huge playlist of ear training arranged somewhat by difficulty, and this is one of the last videos. Maybe check out some of the earlier videos: ru-vid.com/group/PL40pFkWbVtdlfiS6YGQ3zr9mQRj7naT19
@@oscaroscar7904thanks! This is one of my older videos and I feel they’ve increased in quality. Check out this playlist: The Ultimate Ear Training Playlist ru-vid.com/group/PL40pFkWbVtdlfiS6YGQ3zr9mQRj7naT19
I only threw it in the trash because my incinerator was broken. To be clear, diminished triads work great as passing chromatic chords, but as a vii chord it almost always works better to play a V6/5 instead or a fully diminished 7th.
Guessed Mixolydian and cried cause this is really helping me re-discover my love for music and the literacy that the ignorance of my condition stole from me. That you again for sharing yourself and knowledge with the net.
Awesome! Keep it up! If you haven’t seen it, I collected all of these mode exercises in one video with some advice. You might find it helps even more: Modes and How to Hear Them - The Ultimate Musician's Guide ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2J8MqYQZ3XE.html
